Chris Attempts E70 X5 Oil Pan Gasket Day 3: Reassembly

I'm doing lots of work on my BMW X5 xdrive35i (E70, N55) and recording the process. I've never done this job before, so hopefully this helps others avoid making the same mistakes I do. While we speed through the worst of my confusion, for the most part I just let the camera roll. In day 3, we reinstall the subframe and put the car back together. Do you have to remove the engine mounts to remove the oil pan? I don't want to replace mine.
On your bolt pages perhaps you should write "step 9 - propshaft bolts".
They aren’t compatible with the M3. GC sells E46 regular plates. They cannot do stock M3 camber. They only go a far as center like the regular e46. That means the zero position for M3 is not actually 0 . If you want the right part from GC then their street version is the only one actually designed for the M3. If you want the real deal, then Turner and H&R actually designed their properly. These plates are so poorly designed that the bolt bracket also runs into the stainless plate underneath the aluminum one and because of that you can even get the full range. Conclusion, these plates the way they are designed are joke level engineering. Even the cheap godspeed plates are magnitudes better
ISTA and good torque wrenches are absolute must for this job. One thing to point, all BMW online catalogs like FCP Euro (including those from dealers like getbmwparts) have many mistakes in their parts suggestions (you experienced it with the engine mount), the only way to make sure that the part number is 100% correct - to ask a bmw parts department to check it by VIN, they have access to the database that is not available online. Also considering the amount of work, I would think about replacing both front and rear crankshaft seals, if >150k miles then rod/crankshaft bearings and wheel hubs, front diff seals and O-rings, all bushings and struts, basically all the parts that require the same disassembly.
Thank you for this video god bless.
I don't think the coupler would hit the spring perch when you include the bump stop.
You would have saved at least an hour if you read the lift instructions, 😂
What fun is that?
Think I met you out there that day!
Yeah you were really hustling! Hope to see you out there again soon.
Hi Chris, great vid! Lately I've checked error code and got code "25 Auxillery Water Pump error short circuit to ground" - do you think I need a new aux water pump ?
Yep, that sounds like the same issue I had.
Great clip and great insight on the difference between sim and real life. In real life there's no reset button and mistakes are costly!
Wow very organize tools 👌👌👌
Great work! Watching this tells me I really need a lift. I could attempt to do the same neck/back issues would make this 100 times worse. I am still dumbfounded at the design. A simple oil pan gasket is 14 hours of labor!
Hi Chris, awesome video, getting ready to do this on an e71. Quick question, where did you get the engine support bar? Mine wont work with the plastic fenders
Any engine support with a transverse bar aught to work. I bought the Astro Pneumatic 5820 because it was cheap and seemed to work ok.
@@uberchris2 thanks a lot, I will get that one as well.. thanks for your video too. Do you recommend resealing the diff?
Do you see any advantage to going ahead and removing the front axles / cv from the spindle/hubs
“Day 1”. Uh oh. I haven’t watched the video yet, but that’s an ominous start 😁. I do this type of thing for a living and I’d probably struggle a little bit doing an X5 oil pan at home without a full size lift.
Hi Chris. Excellent job. Your abs should be screaming after all this up and down😂😂😂 is there any way to center the subframe if that was previously removed and improperly installed back (I mean without marking the factory position) Thank you for the videos!
Chris I am doing a 100k miles refreshment on a ‘13 35i love your OCD approach fantastic video I have ust replaced all wheel beatings, struts, strut mounts and rebuilt the brakes with stainless lines about to drop the subframe and tackle the leaks wish me luck
and thanks for the tip to replace all four turbo o-rings 👍
Hi Chris, Great video...I am doing the same job on my X5 E70 (oil pan removal). I noticed you referred to some printed instructions on a paper on your work bench. Where did you find the written instructions? Xoutpost or maybe another site? Please provide LINK or website if possible. Thanks!
The link is in the description.
I am so not looking forward to do this on my brother's X5. Better way to organize the nuts and bolts is to put it where you take them out from.
Love the metal organizer at 2:09:09 where did you get that from?
Those are called Wall Control. They are incrementally better than old-fashinoned pegboards, but not perfect.
@@uberchris2 thanks again
Thanks for the torque spec. Saved lots of time
This has to be the best 'how-to' on E70 oil pan gasket, plus many extras. Many thanks.
Hello Chris! Do I need to remove the fan in order to reach the vanos solenoids?
You might be able to get the solenoids out without removing the fan. But once you know the trick, removing the fan is pretty easy and it gives you a lot of room to work in.
@@uberchris2 Thanks for the reply! Do you by any chance know the torque specs for all the bolts in the process?
@@annihil8ted993 Yep. If you click the notes link in the description, they are all written out there.
Great video.thanks
what a bear of a job... my oil pan plug is stripped out and I thought I'd be able to do this job and replace the pan... hahahaha.... Looks like way too much! thanks for you vids though it shows how much a pain these cars can be at times. Your neatness is pretty commendable. thanks again for your vids!
Thank you for doing this, trully appreciate it. Do you konw what the rod bearing bolt torque recommendation? What is the part number for the oil pan gasket? What is the part number for the oil pan bolts? Thanks again
I'm not sure on the torque for the rod bearing bolts on the N55 but usually it's a torque sequence, not just a torque spec. I'd grab a shop manual or a copy of ISTA/D to be sure. Part numbers for the oil pan gasket/bolts can be found here: www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=ZV43-USA-04-2010-E70N-BMW-X5_35iX&diagId=11_4448
@@uberchris2 Thank you so much for real.
what frame did you use to support engine , could you please share the link ? If you would do it for 2nd time , i think you would remove the drive shaft and steering rack our of your way ?
The engine support I used was a Astro Pneumatic 5820. Yeah, probably.
COURAGE!!! with capital letters
Wow. This is one of the best examples of… “it is not always what you know, sometimes it is how you figure things out.” Awesome work. Where did you get that amazing lift? $$?
What type lift?
The lift is a Quickjack. I use a 7000TLX since the curb weight of the x5 is right at the top of the scale for the 5000. Edit: Corrected TL to TLX
@@uberchris2, do you use frame extenders? The distance between the jacking points on the x6 is about 65 inches. The TL model max spread is 60, TLX is 66
Good catch; I have the TLX not the TL. It barely fits.@@bismarckGator
@@uberchris2great! Will be ordering the frame extensions then
Nice work Chris. I need to do the oil pan gasket on our 2010 X5 30i M-sport. Dealer quoted something like $3500 LOL!
Hey Chris, it’s me again. I wish I would live close by to give you a hand on this project. But I should of just made a 4x4 cross to lift the whole frame at once n you would be just guiding it in place. But good job anyways. Peace out!
Yo bro, a real congrats to you for having the guts n balls to do this job by urself, it’s a huge accomplishment. I know how hard it is cuz I did the same thing at home as well. Keep it up n thanks for ur videos. Be always extra safe doing anything under a vehicle, cuz a simple mistake can cost really high. Take it ez!
How hi is your mileage?
It has 130k on it at the moment.
@@uberchris2 in what part of WA you are? I’m from Vancouver
Made me dizzy but Chris I really how u did it and keeping thing tidy along the way. Yes, I watched the whole series.

Corner 2 Worker here, Those were some epic moves from the white car. All of us loved it, even more so with no need to chase cones
Hey Chris what phone mount is that for your E46, just got rid of my Android head unit and that looks nice. Thanks.
I’m glad you like it. The car mount is a Panavise 75103-599 that I got from Best Buy. From there I added a Ram Mount ball, arm, and phone holder. It’s really stable even at the track.
