    This is just beautiful. I had a tear in my eye, come the end. I loved the literary wit in the dialogue, and the charm of the characters. The spirit of Oliver Postgate is alive and well, here! Subscribed.

      Hi Patrick, no - we managed to borrow a theatrical snow machine. However, the film was made in early December and it was very cold!

    With the rather Dickensian first sequence (shades of The Signalman), these beautiful little fragments are the Duck End equivalent of The Mystery of Edwin Drood! Thank you, Peter and Paul, for these superbly atmospheric productions - I've recently been able to introduce them to a railway-minded friend, who hadn't come across them before.

    "...But in 1914, peace was shattered and the world and Juniper Junction were to change forever. Porter Harris enlisted into the Army a year later to do his part and was soon dispatched to France. The friends he left behind waited patiently for his return, hoping to hail him as a hero...but Porter Harris never came home. Lost to the horrors of No Man's Land, he now lies forever beneath Flanders Fields. The young porter was missed by all, yet, many joked that his presence was MOST mourned by the Juniper Cricket Team....Those that returned, at least. All have since parted from this world. Even little Bronwyn and young Cyril. They grew up and old together, fell in love, married young, had children and grandchildren and spent their lives working on the railway through depression, war and modernization until their retirement. They passed away in the year 2000, a mere two weeks apart and almost as Old as Young Mr. Oake had been when he'd died. They can still be found in that area, in the old churchyard, buried side by side. But, before then, they and their family managed to rescue Ethel from the Cutter's Torch, and ever since, their great-grandchildren have continued to loan her out, resplendent in her old colors, to heritage railways across the country. An eternal memorial to the boy who forever loved her. And what of Juniper Junction? By some miracle or another, it remains in use. A hearty survivor of the Beeching Axe, saved, bittersweetly, by the New Town sprawl that now surrounds it. The once green meadows and farmland are now dotted with the work of a post-war council, too eager to build up to see what they were to lose. If you'd lived to see the village of Juniper as it once was, you would hardly recognize it now. But the account of that century old mishap, though remembered by none, lives on in legend. Mrs. Golightley, Captain Simpkins and Mr. Jones, whose Lumbago soon healed and who heard all from his wife and daughter, wrote the story down at the end of the holidays and had it framed and hung in the tea room for all to see, much to Mr. Poddifact's hesitance. And there it hangs still. In fact, it has become a great favorite of generations of station staff and to this day, amid the hydraulic smell of Multiple Units and the purring of passing Goods Diesels, you may still hear them tell the tale of that summer's day, long ago, in the Golden Age of Steam, when Stationmaster Poddifact was almost undone by a King, a Mouse and a Clock."

    What figures did you and Peter use on the railway? Marklin? They really help with the vintage feel over modern figures.

    • @paulrhodes897
      @paulrhodes897 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad you like our films. For the scenes involving figures, we filmed in two scales. On platforms the figures are a mixture of antique lead models or more contemporary ones in Gauge 1. Most of the figures you see in these films, in the signal box for instance, are actually larger than Scale 1. They were heavily adapted by Peter from different sources by building them up with resin and plaster. He was very talented at this.

    Your wonderful videos have influenced the direction my raised garden railway is taking to more of a vintage gauge one feel both in trains, buildings, people. Just wish the trains were easier to find in the states. The struggles of a yank smitten with tinplate trains from the UK in both gauge 1 and 0.
