    Lol, they have Pedro Pascal playing fricken Reed Richards. Why not top it off with RDJ as Doom right? Heh, in all honesty I'm not sold on any of the casting choices atm. I find it hard to believe Disney is going to risk an all out shareholder meltdown due to completely avoidable stupidity now that the veil of the _"Modern Audience"_ casting choices and script writing excuses are gone. At least I hope they won't continue the self-sabotage, though tbh, I think I'd rather they did go the RDJ route with Doom than Pascal as Richards as it is just so...not Reed. At all. In any way, shape or form, it simply doesn't work. Of course in a perfect world he (RDJ) would just cameo as Doom in something and not be a _main one_ in any of the movies which is what I think they are going to do, using the Ironman reveal as a _"Hah! We tricked you because we are smart. Yep."_ A straight up "Drax" or "Dale Gribble" way of going about things sure, but it's better than facing the alternative. ei. They really hate Marvel fans that much.

    Some very nice footage of the cemetery there. I only visited it a couple of times, from what I remember public access was quite restricted for a while due to the amount of vandalism and desecration going on. A bit of trivia, a photograph of pillars in the Egyptian Avenue was used on the cover of Judas Priest's 'Sin after Sin' album. I remember reading about the case in our local paper, the 'Hornsey Journal', and asking my dad how far away the cemetery was, because although I had no actual idea of a Vampire's operating range, it was still a bit of a worry, albeit in kind of a good way... Great stuff as always, thanks for posting!

    I grew up in North London in the 60's and 70's. The local library wasn't up to much, but fortunately there was a good bookshop nearby, and Central London (Watkin's books, Foyles, the Swedenborg and Steiner bookshops, amongst many others) was easily accessible by public transport. There wasn't much of a 'Satanic panic' as I recall, (we somehow endured the spiritual peril threatened by Elton John and Hall and Oates) but I lived a couple of miles away from Highgate cemetery, and I remember there was a lot of concern about 'occult vandalism' and grave desecrations. This all came to a head with stories about a Vampire roaming the cemetery, which led to the police becoming involved to deal with local would-be Van Helsings who had taken to prowling about the place at night. The closest thing to a true 'panic' here was probably the the 'video nasty' hysteria of the 80's. I may be wrong, but I think The Exorcist was actually banned here for a while (or denied a certificate from the BBFC, which would amount to the same thing), and many films were bowdlerised to the point of incomprehensibility.

    • @grannyweatherwax8005
      @grannyweatherwax8005 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think the satanic panic was primarily an American thing, driven by the same Puritanical right that now worships the orange menace. There was a general conservative backlash in the 80s against culture in general. And American talk shows, including Oprah, were some of the biggest enablers.

    I've always wondered by the Satanic Panic took place in the 80s and not the early to mid-1970s when the interest in the occult, black magic and witchcraft seemed to be at its height? I suppose it was to do with the prominence of the Moral Majority, but still the 1980s was a time of prosperity unlike the 1970s, which really was a decade in the doldrums.

    With The Champions ITC TV show much in mind, I would also like to see Peter Saxon's Guardians pulp horror fiction series revived. Either as a new series of books or adapted for television. Preferably both. But I understand that attempts have been made to establish which estate currently holds the literary rights - given that Saxon was an umbrella pseudonym for a tight collective of writers. I'm a big fan of genre TV from the 1960s and 1970s. And we need something that might have met the joint approval of the late Lew Grade and Brian Clemens. And the Occult Detective subgenre is much overlooked by media execs.

    • @occultdetective

      @occultdetective , oh me too. Jones' fantasy covers are iconic. I am amazed by the number of different covers by various artists that were produced for the Saxon books. And over a short period of time, too. The Guardians series went on to influence a number of modern writers - including renowned Uncanny X-Men scribe. Chris Claremont. And I guess in turn, The Champions TV series was an influence on the Guardians' six book series. Especially given the former's occult detective leanings.

      @occultdetective , while we are on the subject of classic genre TV, I firmly believe that Hamner missed a trick by not following up Dracula A..D. 1972 with a spin-off TV series for the UK's ITV network franchise. Peter Cushing's Lorimar VanHelsing, working with London's Met Police to solve a number of Occult related crimes in the capital, could've proved a worthy rival to Karl Kolchak's The Night Stalker.

  • @ulsteredz
    @ulsteredz 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

    As much as I adore Hammer's The Devil Rides Out, I would love to see a TV adaptation of Wheatley's classic novel. An episodic format would allow the screenwriter to incorporate a lot of the story elements that were previously excised due to budget and runtime restrictions. And we could have dramatic cliffhangers worthy of Classic Doctor Who. With Mark Gattis employed as both show runner and screenwriter. Who do you think could play de Richleau? Christopher Lee will always be my cinematic favorite. But my preference for the TV version would be Peter Capaldi. He matches Wheatley's physical description of the character. Close in age, too. At least in looks. Yet, with the youthful vigour required for action scenes. And yes, it needs to remain in period. Yet relatable to modern audiences. And produced with a mixture of modern CGI and practical effects. Yet not heavily reliant on the former. It should also go without saying that storytelling and direction must always remain paramount with such a production. Respect the source material! N.B. Some great suggestions, btw. You have a new subscriber.

    My interpretation of the green eyrd girl: she is first introduced when Balkin is talking about familiars which are traditionally thought to take the form of animals but as we see Balkin is missing information and his literal approach to things backfires on him, and much like the book bider brothers are implied to be demons in human from to facilitate " the Game" what if the girl is a would be familiar spirit tasked with protecting the books and the game until someone solves it, but more than that what if she's part of the test? What if we look at the movie from a Left Hand Path perspective where Lucifer is a Promethean Rebel figure?( Which is already implied by the focus on the " Light "aspect, the biok opens with " Thus let the light shine" and one of the main differences between Balkan and Corso's ritual is Balkan does his at the stereotypical " spooky dead of night" while the movie ends with Corso walking into a light) what if Lucifer doesn't want just anyone, not a mindless sicophant like Balkan, he wants someone worthy, so he makes their would-be familiar their last test, in order to put all the prices together , you have to make her like you? That's why the moment she anounts him is when he shows her compassion and loyalty unprompted. After all it was her who told him that the nineth engraving was a forgery. Do it ends up being Corsco who gets the ultimate price because he wasn't blinded by power or simpering devotion, and now he and his assigned familler get to live the high life in each other's compy forever after. Also another peice of supporting evidence , the familiar never does anything unprompted, he has to ask her, and if he says something like " stay here" that's usually when bad stuff happens to him because she was told not to interfere. The same thing happens when he talks her to pick for him. She can't. All she can do until the contract is signed if hint and help him only in ways she's asked to.

    Might be ready for there to be a weak connection to the spool or glitchy tape jamming at the end... Be more comfortable when you give a follow-up vid without a weird shadow person vaguely visible in the background, though.

      It's a strong film. Hate that it didn't sit well with the general population. Hopefully it will find new life streaming (like The Pope's Exorcist did).

      I had to go watch it alone, with the bad reviews couldn't get my wife in to see it. But it was great! The role reversal and the careful avoidance of sexualizing the daughter was appreciated, and it played with honored tropes while at the same time finding its own way forward. I don't get what all the initial bad reviews were from at all...

    I've been reading a lot of negative comments on this movie. The movie hasn't come out yet and they cut it down. Give it a chance. Looks like a kickass movie. I like the darker look about it. Looks like a thriller, not cartoonish.

      I work in a book warehouse, so I pick up a lot of things there, but I also prowl estate sales, rummages, and out-of-the-way secondhand shops. Always looking for the rare treasure to present itself.

    🌹💙 “The Sorrows Of Satan,” by Marie Corelli, originally published in 1895. It was a best seller for the times, and the book inspired many movies in the early to mid twentieth century. I purchased a 1920s edition in the mid 1970s at a used book sale for .25 cents. Darkly Blessings! 🕯️🙏
