Bee Matter
Canada
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 7 ส.ค. 2019
Bee Matter is just about that, things that matter to bees and the beekeepers that care for them. My name is Chris and I am a beekeeper (Bartel Honey Farms) in Manitoba Canada. I’ve had the unique opportunity to travel the entire country meeting other beekeepers as well as New Zealand and Chile to do the same. This is because we also import packaged bees and queens as well as the Ezyloader from M&K Stafford in Australia.
Through that all I have learned that there are only a few real rules in beekeeping but there is a huge variation in beekeeping practices and nuances and that is what I like to focus on, with a healthy side of humour and maybe even some entertainment. Trying to show the practices and nuances that help my own beekeeping and anyone else who may be able to get some tips from my 35 years of experience and my continuing quest to learn more. Hopefully it will have something to add to your beekeeping experience.
Peace.

Way overdue!! Hive Life 23 customer demo.
A short demo of use with a wonderful customer. This was at Hive Life 2023 and Laura took her brand new 300MH home from there. Twas a lot of fun to be sure. Thank you Laura and Mike!

Shaking packaged bees, variations on a theme
มุมมอง 3293 ปีที่แล้ว
Using four of the compromised packages here are four methods for shaking packages from these Chilean boxes. The mesh used to block the added holes in the top of the boxes mean traditional shake doesn't work quite as well as usual so we get inventive. The last (Method 4) is specifically for any package that may have had a difficult transport and helps boost them but it could be a good method for...

Heyo. This is from August 20, 2020. bees had been moved to fall yards to clear the farmers fields so we had a day of taking honey, making nucs and testing for mites. Along the way pulled out a bag of Api-pasta to see if the bees would like it at all. Not sure they did. But also not a comprehensive test. Visit www.bhfsales.net/ for more info!

@@beematter Thank
hey, I have the same ezyloader and my batteries on the remote only last 2 days. what kind of batteries do you guys use?
They’re AA rechargeable batteries. I usually go with Energizer but I’m curious if your machine isn’t recharging your batteries between uses? This machine is intended to recharge them regularly. Are you changing your batteries every two days?
@beematter yes every two days we change out the batteries. It dose charge them but it drains them pretty fast.
What batteries are you using?
@@beematter Energizer Max
Rechargeable?
Hello! What size platform of this trailer?
I have used 14, 16 and 20 foot trailers. All of them are just over 8 feet wide.
@@beematter Can you share some dimensions of the ezyloader? Maybe you have diagrams and drawings. I want to try to make it for myself! There is no way to buy one in Ukraine!
I believe you can order them directly from the manufacturer in Australia. A web search should give you results for their website and a contact form to reach them and arrange it.
What are the characteristics of the hydraulic motor used in the ezyloader 300. Is there a direct drive to the drum or through a gearbox
What is inclinometr sensor use in auto level?
It is an electronic sensor set to level and can be reset when needed.
Hi Chris, good to put a face to your name. I recently got an Ezy loader 200 mh thru you. Missouri, USA. Very happy with it and the shipper fortunately didn't hurt anything when they tipped it over on it's side. LOL. I would like to see more on setting up the home and level on this as the instructions are a little bare. We're still working on setting yards for using it. So many of our yards are very unlevel. If one has the room and access in their yards the trailer would be what I would go with. Thanks again!
Thank you! It is in the plans to make those videos and hope to get there this summer. Time will tell.
I’ve long suspected that this is AvE secret second channel.
😂😂. I wish.
Where did you purchase the loader and trailer?
This is BHF Sales Ltd TH-cam channel and we import, sell and service EZYLoader in North America. We also mount them on trailers manufactured and purchased from Rainbow Trailers here in Manitoba. We mount them for customers and as demonstration units as we did, with an attempt at light heartedness, in this video. Our website and info is in the “About page” on this and all our videos.
Oh man you did that unpacking of the ezyloader as hard as possible.
Hello from Ukraine! You can drill a hole in that brace so that water does not accumulate and freeze.
Капец😂
Sending gratitude from northern california (almost put ca), you're videos and email support for this ezyloader install have been very helpful! You take the time to describe things in a way that really makes sense.
Awesome, thank you! Never sure if it comes out the way it is in my head lol.
LOL 🎄🍻keep up the great work and I truly appreciate your hard work last season. An example of our industry at work to manage tough conditions, Also, I appreciate your perspective on all things politics in the bee world. Cheers, merry Christmas and be sure to treat your morning coffee with a bit of relaxing Christmas cheer:)
Oh trust me!! Not just the morning coffee lol. Merry Christmas to you as well and likewise your input and hard work in the bee world is appreciated.
I see a bee matter upload, I watch
And I thank you for it!

This particular trailer is 14 feet long and 8.5 feet wide with two 5500 pound axles.
Cool rig! Can that lift be shipped to Florida in the US? If so what would the ball park cost range be ?
It can indeed and using todays exchange rate it’s around $38000 delivered.
👍
How many hives on the trailer
The trailer in the video has a payload capacity of 8444 pounds but the deck itself can hold up to 96 hives if loaded from the rear. We did not have that many hives to move so loaded from the side which leaves room for 72 hives and is under the weight cap even with pallets. The scale on the EZYLoader is very handy to keep track of how much weight you have on the trailer and keep it under max weight. We also have 16 foot trailers with 7000 pound axels which allows us to load 96 from the side and have the weight capacity to handle it. The new demo unit will be on one of these. Hope to get video of that one out too.
@@beematter thanks for your detailed response I really appreciate it
Thanks for the share... what's the cost of the box jig? I didn't see it on your site.. Thanks again..
That will depend on your location for currency and shipping. You can email me if you like with that info and will get you a quote.

So when you have a loss like this, 50%, do you get comped by the seller? Or do you just have to eat the loss? And do the bees typically experience stress from the travel?
Bees always experience stress when travelling, even in hives but yes we do expect some compensation for losses. Sometimes it is full coverage and sometimes prorated to the losses experienced. If we can make one hive out of two packages, for example, we would request 50% coverage. It needs to be shown to be airline or producer issues though, not handling or hiving issues this side so some investigation is required.
Not for me I’m faster loading by hand lol I can load 80 hives by hind in 30 min I don’t seem to beet that time
Over engineered. Less materials and moving parts with a vertical table top design.
Great chat, cheers! :)
Can you comment what ton truck you are using?
Sure. This is a 2500 hd. A ¾ ton pickup.
What’s that I hear? The motor ramps up upon its call to power on,
I know right?? Weird but useful.
Ya, those gussets show cracks but as you say, because they were not welded under the same heat, the cracks did not follow into the structural welds . We ground off the gussets and acid tested the structural welds. Welding that requires a lot of preparation
It does indeed. Hopefully it goes well with the rest of the rebuild
Hi Chris. I have the same planer. To mitigate snipe, I find that slightly elevating the free end of the stock, on both infeed and outfeed sides, helps in a big way.
Cool. Thanks for the tip. I’ll have to give that a try. I sometimes use sacrificial boards or, if I have more than one board to plane, start the next one before the first one is done.
@@beematter yes. Sacrificial boards are great. I grew up feeding a 15, 000 lb planer that ran off a 60 HP diesel engine. It was important to keep the lumber end to end no gaps.
@@ThatBeeMan wow. That’s quite the planer.
@@ThatBeeMan the wish list for shop tools is quite long but this is one I am quite happy with. Got it slightly used with the exact helical blades I had planned to install on a new one. Next tool is probably a bandsaw. 14” minimum.
@@beematter Nice! I am stil running straight blades in my 735. Here's a link to videos on that big old planer. th-cam.com/play/PL01Quff4X3J0uoosOKpuPflouIHoAf8jF.html
You are professional man, very excelent work, all solutions in Bee matter.... if you want you can do.
ah you guys should use caution the main column of that lift system is drastically insufficient that should be an 8x8 square tube beef it up in redesign for safety
Thanks for your comment Thomas. The engineers who designed it did so with safety and longevity in mind over 35 years ago and it has an excellent safety record. In fact there are many of these machines that have well over 20 years of service still operating safely today . Some of the other videos on our channel get more into the install and structure of the unit if you are interested.
Transllajt in albania
I’ll see what I can do.
Excelent!
A lip beard and ear ring..really instills confidence. ..now if we can figure out how to turn it on.
Lol.
It's really going to shine when you're pulling honey
Hi, what kind of hydraulic station is installed in it? Can you suggest the characteristics? I apologize for the text, I'm from Ukraine, so I'm writing through a translator. I will be grateful for the answer))
Hi. Hopefully this translates back well. I am not quite sure what info you want so without getting too specific; it is a self contained hydraulic pump/tank/valve set up controlled by the computer in the EzyLoader. The auto level, raise and lower functions and the winch system on the 300MH and smaller units using the hydraulic winch rather than electric are all powered by this pump. I will cover it more in upcoming videos.
Thanks Chris , It will be interesting to see how that turns out. Nice to see some new videos I threw 3 super sketchy hives (one swarm) together late last season and they made me 110 lbs this year .
Thanks Sheldon. That’s cool and I’m waiting to see how it goes too. Always amazes me how resilient and malleable bees can be…sometimes lol.
Could you please give a reference or paper for "bees move eggs and put them in queen cells"? In my years of studies, I've failed to find this observation in the literature. Thank you so much.
I will see if I can find anything. I have observed it myself, back before the advent of cameras in every pocket, so have never really bothered to look it up. Just assumed if I had seen it most other beekeepers had too.
Maşallah
Love this concept! May look into one of these myself. Need to find a dealer in the US
It is pretty nice set up. BHF Sales is the importer/distributer for North America so feel free to pm me or use the links in the description for our website or email.
Ohhhhh new gloves and jacket !!!
Yeah. The old stuff went missing lol. Happens occasionally on our farm.
Thanks Chris , learned a few things. Do all of your shipments run temp loggers ? Or do some suppliers not use them ?
We request them on all shipments and get them on most but not all suppliers feel they need to use them.
Thought's please??
Love the Ezyloader. Simple to use and handles hives on both two-way and four-way pallets very well. Those are my first thoughts and have a lot more. If you can be more specific I could give my thoughts on that as well.
Добрый день. Расскажите по подробнее про датчики горизонта. Как устроены и принцип работы.?
Hi there. I am not certain what you mean. Google translate may be failing us. It tells me you want to know about a horizon sensor, and assume it means the auto level sensor. Is that correct?
My wife asks how often you get stung. I loftily wagered that you average 6 stings a day. Does that number seem pathetically low to you?
Some days yes, that would be very low but actually it pretty much right on the money. Depends on the day though. This brief inspect only resulted in one. Record is over 100. It was a bad day.
I see what you did there... rounded the edges. Smart.
Great video keep them coming 👍🏻👍🏻🐝
Thanks. Will do my best.
the slice in the api pasta was very nice
Thanks. Looked surgical.
Do you think this could lift a four way of double deeps?
I would expect so. It would depend on how full they were though. We tried two pallets and it was a bit much with winter hives full of feed but take out the extra pallet, lids and bottoms and would have been different.
The capacity is 660 pounds for the 300MH.
Great video, from where do you get those packages?
We import them from Arataki Honey Ltd in Rotorua New Zealand.
@@beematter I saw a CBC article recently saying the bees being imported were having supply chain issues for Manitoba beekeepers, did you experience that this year? What was your solution if so?
We did along with many Canadian beekeepers the last while. Mostly due to airline schedule changes during Covid and related issues. We hope to be back to normal by 2023.
Our solution on the farm side is to make our own queens and produce as many nucs and splits as possible without jeopardizing our production hive strength. Typically 200-400 per year. That also helps build numbers and replace old stock.
