Craftsman Quick Change Gearbox Reduce Feed Rate in Half and then in HALF AGAIN .001" per revolution
Craftsman / Atlas Non-Commercial 12" Lathe with Quick Change Gearbox (QCGB). How to cut your feed rate in half twice. Reduce the slowest feed rate of .0042" per revolution down to .001" per rev. It only takes a few easily obtainable parts.

Making a Chuck Jaw on my 70 Year Old Lathe
มุมมอง 3514 ปีที่แล้ว
This video shows how I made a jaw for a 4 jaw chuck using only a lathe with a milling attachment. This is my very first TH-cam video. Also my first attempt at video editing. I am also a total novice machinist, never even took metal shop in high school. I bought this lathe a few months ago and learned how to use it by watching thousands of TH-cam videos. (Thanks Tubalcain, Pieczynski and others)...
Oh. You have to buy something first. How helpful. I guess I should known that was coming.
Yes. I guess some of you may have to buy something first. When I bought my lathe, it did not have a Quick Change Gearbox but it did come with a whole bunch of change gears. When I couldn't take it anymore I bit the bullet and purchased a QC Gearbox for about the same price I paid for the original lathe. But I saved the change gears. Not are they handy for making speed adjustments but you can also use certain combinations to cut metric threads.
Thank you very much.
Thanks Todd. This gives me another way of accomplishing the "slower" tasking of the lead screw for a smoother finish.
That is ONE CLEAN LATHE! I'm in the middle of rebuilding/restoring my new-to-me Atlas QC-42, so I'll need this. Thanks!
To cut in haft I need a Bushing & a 24 teeth gear , Is that right
Love the Genesis interludes!
I just inherited one of these from my dad. Do you have the Craftsman model number for your lathe?
.
Since your are a novice, it is "machinist". Only one who is better than anyone else can call himself the "machinest"
Great video, clear and concise, very easy to follow. Thanks
Excellent.
Very Good Todd... I really liked that info.... I'd already done the first reduction a while back.... I'll be gathering some parts now.... Thanks..... I do have one question... The gear chart you made is much nicer than mine.... Could you post yours or make it available ??
Good video very clear easy to understand . Do you have any idea what the gear combinations would be if I wanted to cut larger coarser threads like 1-2 tpi for large wooden vise screws ? Thanks Bob
Great job
Great video!!! Best information out there on slowing that feed down. Question, what milling setup do I see there.. maybe a short video on that setup.. thanks !!
I made an adapter to attach a four inch rotary table to the Craftsman - Atlas milling attachment. Rigidity was a serious issue.
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Nicely done Todd! Particularly impressed with how you improvised machining the radius on the jaws! Really makes you appreciate those machinist of yesteryear and their ingenuity. Looking forward to your next project! That quick change gearbox will definitely make things easier...
Thanks Bob. That Quick change gearbox should be here soon. Looking forward to rebuilding it before I install it.
Well done, sir.
Thank you, I'm learning more every day, and thank you for posting my very first comment.
