Cherry shrimp color genetics: Towards a new, red-blue mosaic line
มุมมอง 662 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
With a dream of breeding a beautiful, red-blue mosaic cherry shrimp, I started to breed blue dream males with fire-red females. The F1 offspring are dark color (I call them as hybrid black rose cherry shrimp, very similar to black rose line). By inter-breeding these F1 offspring for more than one year, now I have obtained 3 nice red-blue mosaic cherry shrimp: red head with sky-blue body. It see...

Ring-billed gull swallow a whole stonecat fish that has many strong hard spines
มุมมอง 2628 วันที่ผ่านมา
Ring-billed gull is a medium-sized gull. This evening I saw a ring-billed gull caught a stonecat from a pond. Stonecat is a small catfish but has many strong hard spines. These spines can protect stonecat from their predators. Like great blue heron, the gull spent long time (more than 2 min) to beat the cat fish until it was completely unconscious, and then swallow the fish as whole. Encountere...

Great blue heron: My protocol for eating catfish with strong hard spines
มุมมอง 33หลายเดือนก่อน
Recently I observed that great blue heron uses a very smart protocol to eat stonecat, a small catfish with strong hard spines. After catching the fish, he first walks onshore, and then beats the fish with his strong beaker until the fish unconscious. Then, very importantly, he checks fish in water many times (up to 10?) to ensure the fish is dead or can not move at all. After all of these proce...

      I don't know if Canada Geese can, but I've had so many pets that can understand what I'm saying - rats, dogs, ferrets, rabbits, even wild animals like squirrels and animals in zoos like elephants. Animals are way smarter than humans think they are, imo.

      If the population of Canada geese in a given area is not too high, their poop's quantity will not be too high, and this should be OK/acceptable. Besides, their poop do not have too much bad smell due to they are plant-eater (I do not smell anything if the distance is >1m). As long as they are not over-populated, they add beauty to our life/nature in general.

      Yes. The fox ate all eggs (4-5). The eggs had been incubated for a month, but no baby hatched. These eggs were probably unfertilized. The fox is a female and has her own babies to feed. She must be very hungry and ate all eggs. Canada geese were sad, but they probably knew the eggs could not be hatched and they did not really do their best to protect the eggs.

      Yes. It's interesting. Some probably will live always in the south (USA). If this is true, Canada geese will differentiate eventually into 3 sub-species: southern (non-migratory), central (migratory), and northern (non-migratory).

    Thank you for the information. Do you think you can try to make purple? It's most likely nearly impossible just cause shrimp genetics are funky, but it would be sick to see.

    • @cherryshrimplovegreenhairalgae
      @cherryshrimplovegreenhairalgae 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For sure the color genetic of cherry shrimp may be very complicated. If we think about how people have bred so many different koi or goldfish from wild ancestors, I would say it is possible to make purple cherry shrimp: we can first breed red with other color, such as yellow, and then keep their first hybrid generation to inter-breed, and keep them in aquarium with PURPLE background. Then to wait patiently, until we obtain some mutated one(s) closing to purple, and then interbreed them to fix the trait. Of course, this will be a very long process! I had also bred blue dream (male) with fire-red female, and the F1 hybrids all look like black rose line. Then I inter-bred these F1, I obtained their offspring (F2): red, blue, black, etc. From many of them, I obtained 1 mutated male I like very much: red nose (head), with sky blue on the other parts. Now I am trying to breed this male with blue female and hybrid black rose female, to see if I can obtain more shrimp with red head/blue or black on the other parts. My dream is to obtain a stable blue line with red head, a beautiful red-blue mosaic line.

      Canada geese like to eat many different kinds of plants. In winter, some of them do not migrate to the South but stay in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. They find food from unfrozen shallow water in St. Laurance River, but they can not find food from land which is covered by ice/snow. There were a few days in Feb this year which were quite warm and snow started to melt. Two smart geese immediately found the green grass that they had not seen for almost two months...... They were really very happy and enjoyed the green grass very much.

    Theory: Red color is most likely due to carotenoid pigment while Blue is likely du to iridophore pigments, which is another family of pigment. Their accumulation are therefore probably driven by different genes. So your F0 is probably something like RRbb X rrBB, F1: RrBb and if i'm not wrong the F2 should have 1/16 of RRBB shrimps with both fully expressed pigments, 3/16 of blue, 3/16 of red and 9/16 of brown.

    • @cherryshrimplovegreenhairalgae
      @cherryshrimplovegreenhairalgae 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Your theory that Blue and Red are controlled by 2 different genes (at 2 different loci) are very interesting, and I believe it should be true. I did observed F2 have pure red, pure blue, dark/black (like F1), and some with intermediate color patterns. It is very hard to know the ratios due to: 1). shrimp are keeping hiding and swimming; 2). color of the same shrimp may change after molting; 3). color of the same shrimp may change during development, including ageing. From my other hybrid breeding, it shows that Yellow is also a co-dominate trait as Red. Now I am interested to know if we bred Green Jade or Black Rose (pure line) with Red, what will the color patterns of their F1 (and F2) be? Thank you very much for your interesting theory.
