Bear Behind Apiary & Maple
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 30 มิ.ย. 2023
We're a VERY small scale apiary and maple sugar producer. My goal is to run 10-12 hives and 100 maple taps annually for a side-hustle hobby. Not really trying to make money....but I am trying to break even!
Final Check up 2024 | Bear Behind Apiary & Maple 2024
In this video, I take advantage of Vermont's weird warm weather to check the hives & add sugar bricks. Let's see what Old Man Winter has done to us so far.....but, we still have a lot more winter to come!

Continuing saga of the squished queen. Looking to see if the girls built any queen cells. It's pretty late in the season, do you think this experiment will succeed?

I have wondered about those glove, I don't normally wear gloves because of the dexterity issues. Nice Box of Bees, they are just saying Hi.😂 Looks like to small to cold to me, that's a bunch of boxes for a cluster that small. I have ran into that. Well that is no fun, Sorry about that. One good thing about deadouts is they open up a lot of Food Frames and Drawn Comb for the next season. Thanks for sharing your time with us. Blessed Days...
Yeah, they're wicked comfortable....but kinda clumsy. I'll keep working with 'em and see if they "pack out"
I wish I had those kinds of pine trees.😂That is much easier then my pinecones. They are bundled up good, nice.👍 Just an observation, but it looked like water was pooling up top some. I think I'd tilt that one a little more personally. That waster sitting up there isn't the best for the thermal retention unlike snow. (retired housing contractor)Thanks for sharing, Blessed Days...
Do they hibernate?
Honeybees stay active, only leaving the hive on warm days for a bathroom break. On cold days, they cluster together, vibrating to generate heat, keeping the group & small amounts of brood warm
Happy Veterans day, most of the boys in my family actually served
Looks like a nice box of bees to me.👍Thanks for sharing your time, Blessed Days...
All these are blessings of the creator Allah. All worships and praises are to Allah.
👍👍👍
So I have been thinking about buying the 3 in 1 extractor like that and wondering if you liked it or would you go a different route if you did it over again?
I do like it. It's kinda big, but if you have the space I think you'll be happy. Cleaning isn't hard, but does take a bit of hot water & time to dry Here's the longer video: th-cam.com/video/RgnvSLAun3E/w-d-xo.html
@@BearBehindApiaryMaple-rg8dn that was a perfect review and what I was looking for thank you!
I have also tried using an electric filleting knife for uncapping honey frames. I wanted it to work well but ended up just being faster with a conventional decapping knife. A conventional knife would only take a few seconds to uncap your frame and would be easier on your wrist vs holding the electric knife like you have shown. I only have 4 hives but we extract about 40 boxes or about 1200 lbs of honey a year in this method.
Wow! I'll have to give that a try. Did you use a serrated bread knife?
@@BearBehindApiaryMaple-rg8dn, if you google "serrated uncapping knife" you will see that its similar to a bread knife but it has an offset handle, has teeth on both sides, is wider and a little longer than a bread knife.
Cicadas... The sounds of summer!
Thank you for the video. I'm very sorry about the queen. I hope she is doing well. Let us know, please.
I'm so sorry, that is a heartbreaker. But thank you for letting us learn from your mistake. You may have saved several of us from a similar future mistake.
Thank you! - just recently discovered her walking around. Cautiously optimistic she's still able to lay.....
Oh wow! I pray she will be okay!! Please keep us posted, I feel invested in her!
This is something new for me. Thanks
Does this mean a green foundation inticiats drones?
The green foundation is sized for drone cells, slightly larger "base" than worker cells. The bees usually follow the pattern when they draw it out. The queen will measure the cell size, and lay an unfertilized (drone) egg
So sorry about your queen. Love the Robin in the background. Your sound pick up is great.
thank you!
I've just been to the club apiary today - it will be a while before I get my own bees - I think I just learned a whole lot about raising queens. Thank you.
Hello, I found your channel a few days ago, and have watched all of the videos, you have some great content hope to see you're channel grow.
Thank you!
Hello from Kajun Homestead
Does each box need a queen?😊. Learning a newbie
Each hive (small box in this case) needs either a queen or an egg (and nurse bees) to raise a new queen.
Its obvious you are calm with the bees. Something I never acquired. Interesting to watch.
Thank you Dan
Your a natural. Great you got the queen.
Looks like you have a beautiful day with the bees, that is how it's done. Blessed Days...
Congratulations Roger! I’m glad I was tied up, well sort of!
Congratulations the 1st swarm is so, so much fun. You can hear all the excitement all around, Blessed Days...
I see happy hungry honey bees.😁wow say that 3 times fast.😂The cover art with the bee in Winter gear is great. Have a great day, thanks for sharing your time.
Thank you!
😂Ya I have regretted not using a smoke a few times this Fall into Winter.
Hey get a fume board. They leave in 5 min.
Hey with populations that small you really don’t need anything! Those girls definitely had a mid summer brood break at some point.
So peaceful to watch while your calm demeanor makes for a wonderful view.
