A sixty something guy, life long resident of Maryland. Jack of all trades but master of none! If given enough time I can usually figure out how to do something. In my early career I was a General Certified ASE mechanic, but spinal surgery kept me from doing that. I used to build and repair trailers for a living, had my own company, but retired in 2005. I love drag racing and show cars as you can tell from the pictures. Now I just try to maintain a 5 acre plot of land.

Best thing to do is to install a shut off valve above the exspantion tank so the pressure from the furnace is held back. So you can change them out with out a mess.

I guess you don't have any coal mines there?
Roughly how much coal to last the winter? On this not knowing where you live and how you like your heat. About from when to when do you keep it going? Like November to late march.
Well I'll try to be as specific as possible. I am in Northern Central Maryland. The house is 1400 sq ft. marginally insulated, built in the late 30's. Now I burn wood during the day and only burn coal through the night to avoid getting up to feed the stove. Last winter season I burned 1 1/2 tons of coal. Approx. $600 worth
@plnthrd thanks for the info. I'm in ohio. Have a duel fuel wood/coal stove with a heat blower on the back. It's in the basement, and the heat rises through the house. Always burn wood but thinking of getting coal. We can get it by the load around here.

Excellent.....
Why do you care? It's not your fence. Seems like all you do is worry about what the neighbors are doing. You are a miserable old busy body with entirely too much time on your hands. Always spying on the neighbors, get a life or better yet MOVE!
Drill a hole thru the brick into your basement. mount your lithium battery inside. Run an extension to your generator with a plug in disconnect. This will keep your lithium battery warm and you will extend the life of your battery. Also it will make it easier to monitor your charging. You shouid not charge any Lithium battery below 32 degrees or you risk damage to the battery.

Does the neighbor smoke anything in a lil glass pipe?
LOL
This is the best synopsis of coal versus wood that I've heard yet and I'm 73 and have been burning solid dinosaurs for over 40 years. As a kid in the 50's we had a coal burner and bin in the basement so in my case nostalgia and sentimentality are the reasons I like burning coal. I have used wood in the past but with having lived through two chimney fires I stopped that. I also have a pellet stove as a backup in case our other heating system malfunctions. A few more pros and cons about coal I'd like to add if I may. Pros: Coal doesn't attract mice and insects like wood does. Animals won't nest in it, eat it or chew it. When brought into the house there's no hitchhiking bugs or animal scat to deal with to contaminate the indoors. It's much neater and cleaner when transporting into the house - no twigs, leaves, branches, sawdust that has to be swept up. It's easily bucketed and contained. Coal, when burned properly is an even, steady heat. Experienced folks like myself can start a coal fire and keep it burning continuously for a whole season. Cons: Coal burning tends to deteriorate metal chimney pipe much faster than wood. So, for new installations or replacement chimneys the cost is much much higher for stainless steel-lined stovepipe, adaptors or any metal chimney parts. Of course that's up to the homeowner to decide which pipe to use. "Clinkers" - sometimes burnt coal will harden into a lumps called "clinkers" that'll jam the grates while shaking down the daily ash. I've had them, not sure why it happens but sometimes I've had to shut the stove down and start it up again from scratch. Coal burning generally needs more tending than a wood fire - you have to "shake down" the ashes at least once, many times twice daily and load the stove with fresh fuel to always keep a bed of red coals. I have to agree with you on all you've stated like the fact that coal prices have risen sharply. I paid $200 at ton a few years ago and now it's $300 from a local guy. Our local Tractor Supply sold coal for $8.00/40 lb bag a few years ago, now it's 12.99. Lastly, thirty years ago there were at least six places to buy coal here in Western NJ/Eastern PA. One place even allowed you to load up your own and pay by weight. Now there's only one, a local supplier who'll deliver. I'm praying that he outlives me because when he's no longer available it'll be the end of an era and I'll be done using coal. Maybe the November election will determine whether us poor folks/fixed income types can keep burning the stuff. Thank you for a well thought out video and for taking the time to share your wisdom and experience with us.
@@mariofilippi3539 I'm going to call my supplier this week to get the price this year....just in time for a Halloween scare!
Another con for wood is that it has to be seasoned at least a year.

How do you clean you liner? I have a company telling me I can’t have the same setup as you because there is no way to clean liner without removing the entire stove ?
My stove has a rear exit and attached to that is a Tee with a cap on the bottom. Undo 2 screws and the cap comes off to clean the liner
@@plnthrd thank you so much for getting back to me. That’s the exact same setup I want to have. I just bought a used mark 3 with a rear outlet. These companies are telling me that I have to extend my hearth out more because they want a foot on either side to service my stove. They tell me nobody will want to clean my liner because they will have to physically move the stove out which will pull the liner down. I dont understand what I’m missing. Do you have to pull your entire stove out to clean the liner? How are you able to reach the “T” behind the stove? Did you have to knock out any bricks at the bottom of your chimney? Maybe you could make a video because it’s going to cost me $$$ to extend my hearth and I don’t think I need too by looking at your setup.

The moral of the story.....always have a bucket handy when doing plumbing. I gave a thumbs up & subscribed because I like your attitude! Lesson learned there.
Lesson is to close all the boiler valves, relieve the pressure from the system, and no need for an impromptu shower.

I am a 73 year old widow with two malignant narcissists living next door. The husband stays home with the preschoolers while his wife works, so he has 24 hours a day to make my life miserable. The wife lets the husband do most of the dirty work, and they have even weaponized their preschoolers and my neighbors. The police won’t do anything unless he physically assaults me. He is a sneaky resentful stalker who stalks me every time I go outside (he is very careful to make sure that my neighbors don’t see what he’s doing. I installed security cameras after he came within inches of assaulting me, and then he started to intentionally wake up my security cameras to harass me, sometimes as many as 18 times in one day (they are offended by my security cameras even though they had security cameras two years before I did). He will stalk me whenever I go outside and always makes sure that I know that he is always watching me. I’ve called the police on him twice when he came on my property. Both times these neighbors intercepted the cops before I could talk to them. They are both pathological liars (she told me that I tried to run over her kids with my car, so I can only imagine what they’ve told other people). For five months of the year (when the weather is warm enough for them to be outside all of the time) their favorite weapon is noise, with drunken parties, screaming kids, and blaring music almost every evening from afternoon until after dark. This all started two years ago because I told him that I didn’t want him on my property. I don’t have family here and can’t move, and these people are cowardly bullies who are obviously determined to destroy me. In all of my years, I have never known anyone that I would say is pure evil until I met these people. No sleep, no peace, and definitely PTSD.

Tell your neighbor to go F himself. The fire-chief tried the same thing with me. I told him to get the H off my property as he could not enforce the burn laws. Im glad I got the neighbors I have. We'd help eachother with a project like this. Instead of complaining about it, I'd help show them how you do it right. We all work together in my community. Its nice having neighbor that help eachother vs fighting each other. I grew up with a neighbor that was more worried about what was going on at our house. I wish he would have just minded his own busy and let us alone. Your neighbor is going about his business, your letting it get your head.
Our neighborhood used to be like that too, everyone helped everyone else. When this guy moved in I offered my help for anything he needed but he declined, so I just backed off. He owned the property for three weeks when he trespassed the first time with his tractor and tore up my lawn and put a huge gouge in my brand new driveway. Then he started to tell me what I can and can't do on my property, so I ignored it until he started to make complaints to code enforcement against me. Code enforcement inspected my property and found no violation. After that I started getting threatening letters from his attorney. I had enough, and reported him for 9 violations to which he was cited for 8. Shortly after he moved a family of migrants into his GARAGE. Code Enforcement cited him for that and made them move out. reinspection showed they moved out. 4 days later they moved back in the garage. Now he had locked down his electric front gate and when another neighbor made a complaint that they had moved back in the doctor denied entry to the inspector unless he was present 2 days later. They moved the migrants out the day before the next inspection and he flew into a narcissistic rage screaming at me over the fence for a report I hadn't made. 4 neighbors told Baltimore County that they were willing to testify in court that the family was still living in the garage but they refuse to get a search warrant for illegal occupation. After all this the neighbor without any proof filed a Peace Order against me claiming he was scared for his life from me. Long story short, this clown has cost me close to $4k to defend myself for the very things he has done to me. It's called projection and it's what narcissists do, they lie to everyone including the court system. Oh and now the migrant family is expanding into the lower part of the garage because his spouse is pregnant and needs more room. Anyway enough about this clown and his childish actions, I haven't told you half of how he's treated me. Pray you never have to deal with a narcissist it's UGLY!

@plnthrd I did pay $5000 to have professionals install my fence. It's only been 2 years, and I want to tear it down and redo it. It looks terrible. The way they trimmed it out looks terrible, and the double gate doesn't even line up with each other. You can go shake the whole one wall. They didn't tamp any post. Then we had professional come build a metal building for us, about a third of the way in I seen the work they were doing. I told them to leave and I'll just buy the kit and do it myself. A friend and I did it in 3 days, and it looks a hell of a lot nicer than what they would have done.
