I think I have a problem. I keep reading random articles on the Internet about being the woman of a man’s dream, being the woman that every man wants, being the woman that your future man has been waiting for, and so on.
Hold up.
Why do I have the be the woman of a man’s dreams? Why do I have to be the woman of anyone else’s dreams? I want to be the woman of my dreams. I want to be the woman I always thought I would grow up to be; the woman that 10 year old me envisioned before being with a man ever crossed my mind.
I have worked hard day in and day out since a young age to grow into the woman I am today. Are you trying to tell me I have put in all of this hard work just to satisfy someone else’s dreams? To meet someone’s standard of a great woman to marry? What has this all been for? A test? A test to prove I am worthy of someone else’s dreams, hopes, and desires?
I say no. NO.
I did not miss out on school events and hanging out with my friend’s throughout high school to earn good grades to get into college just so I could be the woman of your dreams. I did not find an intense balance of having a life and being able to graduate Cum Laude from my undergrad and with a 4.0 from graduate school to be the woman of your dreams. I did not travel across the country for 3 months to learn more about who I am, who I was, and who I want to be to satisfy your dreams. I did not create an organization based on empowering people to tell their stories and connect strangers throughout the world to be the woman of your dreams.
These were and are my dreams.
