1967 Triton 750 Cafe Racer
Startup video of our 1967 Triton cafe racer build
This is our first full Triton build. Our homage to the original Cafe Racers of the 60's. We took a 1967 Norton Atlas slimline frame and have powered it with a 1972 Triumph T120 engine to create our own version of the famous cafe racer. We started right back from a bare frame to complete a full build. Being a Triton, we were able to add our own twists and ideas into what suits our tastes while keeping the traditions at heart. For those of you worrying, we did not separate a matching frame/engine Atlas for the project (we would never dare!).
For the engine, or 'Tri' part of the project we went with a fully rebuilt '72 Triumph T120 with a Morgo 750 big bore kit. It has a 7 plate clutch for light and trouble free clutch action. It was decided to go with a Boyer electronic ignition using a single coil to save space. Podtronics were also installed for reliability and space saving. The wiring harness is a new but modified Norton Commando harness.
For the frame part of the project - the 'ton'. We went with a 67 Atlas slimline frame mainly because they were easier to find than the earlier wideline frames. We used the famous Dresda brand for engine plates. We decided to paint these black rather than the bare metal type, we have added more black to the project than the basic metal/chrome look and this was a early route we decided to go with just to make ours a bit different. The original slimline swingarm was retained as we were happy with it's condition. We also kept the Atlas instrument panel but used a 71 Commando front end - yoke, fork sliders and TLS brake. With this instrument panel we added a few modern extras such as a voltage gauge and LED warning lights with icons. Just for kicks it was decided to add a Norton Commando frame ID plate - with a build date of 2024.
Being a Triton, pretty much everything is made to our own tastes.
Work done(everything really):
- Fully rebuilt commando front end with TLS brake
- New Dunlop TT100 tyres
- New rear shocks Atlas type
- Customised wiring harness
- Pazon Electronic Ignition and single coil
- Mini battery located under seat hump
- Folding kick start
- Podtronics regulator/rectifier
- LED lighting including idiot lights
- LED voltage indicator
- Oil Pressure gauge
- Wassel Carbs
- Bellmouth air intakes
- 5 Gallon Manx Style fuel tank
- Modern switchgear
- Dresda Rearsets
- Dresda engine plate and head steady
- Norton type Oil Filter
- RGM Norton side stand (modified)
- Big bore exhaust pipes
- Reverse cone silencers
- Overhauled and cermakromed wheels
- Painted and striped tanks in Manx style
and much much more...
This bike has had hundreds of hours and a lot of money put into it to get it just how we would like our own Triton. With this we have tried to keep it as close to the original spirit of the Tritons. This is our keeper bike and will be riding this. We may build another Triton down the track so keep checking back.

Překrásná stavba .Nádherný motocykl.Bravo.
beautiful
Soon as it starts. Yep, single Mikuni, sounds weak, cough, gasp, sputter. For proper Norton performance and sound, dual carbs are a necessity.
Many owners put on the single Mikuni carb because they can't adjust dual carbs. This Commando with the dual Amal carbs sounds pretty awesome to me. Respect to this builder
Nice Norton Commando with variations of other years and models added to this rebuild. The motor shows it's a 750 '71 with 30 mm manifolds and carbs. Later model 850 paint pattern on the tank and side covers but not the '71 paint pattern, indicators and rear seat rail installed from 850 models also, front disc from '72 or newer model added but not the double leading shoe brake of a '71 model. The vinyl seat pattern is a '71 and '72 pattern. All additions make this a nice Commando. Respect.
@@NortonCombat-ib3xw spot on! It came with the later disc brake so we just kept it. And yes the paint scheme is the later 850 type, we were going to keep this as our rider and like the later scheme so that's why we went with it. Indicators for compliance. Grab rail once again for looks. You know your commando's. Cheers!
@@angloclassics Also same taste as me! Looking forward to my first ride out!
LA moto de mes rêves que je n'ai jamais eue. Mon voisin avait exactement la même. Nostalgie....!
Excellent bike and great taste 👌
This model was a disaster. Its ancestors, the Dominator 500 and 650, were apolaustic. The Atlas was bored out to 750. The resulting vibration was horrific. Thus, the Atlas had a short life. It was replaced by the smooth as silk Commando, far more rideable, although without the immortal featherbed frame. Those of us who have spent a riding lifetime with Norton think the company made a mistake: it should have kept the frame and built a modern motor.
The twin carbs are a total nightmare to fit to their inlet stubs and the air filter setup is a complete lash up. On my 1972 750 I have a single Mk1 930 Concentric and it has transformed the bike for the better! More torque and improved fuel consumption. Who wants to spend ages tuning twin carbs any more?
I understand that syncing twin carbs is too difficult for you but that doesn't make your single carb Commando better. As you refer to the two cap screws securing an intake manifold to the head as a 'total nightmare' and putting an air filter into a basket and securing it with 2 bolts as a 'complete lash up' fails to convince me that an owner with limited skills makes for a better Commando. Reducing the air/fuel mixture on a Norton Commando does not increase it's torque in the low, medium or high end RPM range. If you prefer supposed better mileage to higher performance that's your decision. My dual carb '72 Combat gets 55+ miles per imperial gallon. Good enough for me and I keep the acceleration and the torque that you lose.
Take off 1 carb and you get more torque. Hilarious. Another expert I assume.
Shame the dual carbs and the very functional Commando air filter are all gone. The original Commando acceleration and torque are gone too. Instead of losing performance it's better to learn how to sync the dual carbs.
They were long gone when we got the bike. If the new owner decides to convert back to original it's an easy enough job
old is gold 👌👌
I had a 66 Atlas , hot-cams , hi-comp etc , blew commando's-away , terrible-brakes though . Dave nz
My husband's father had one new 1969 he would he would stay up on Friday night so he could go for ride with his dad husband Todd was 7 that year his dad worked until 1030 at night he would wait very impatiently until he could hear that beautiful triple coming up the hill he has always wanted one !!!!!!!!!!!! Beautiful !!!!!!!!!
Brilliant story! They are something else and the sound is very unique. Cheers
Wonderful machine
Very nice Triumph T 150😊👍👍
Good job , ready for summer , if it ever arrives !
Surely we're due a summer this time round?
I had one of those, but it never looked that pristine... mine was rattle-can paint and a budget 2-1 exhaust (had to remove the center-stand) and upped the front sprocket to a 21-tooth as I recall... by then it was my 2nd or third Norton; another of those bikes I wish I still had...
I think everybody has a 'wish I kept that one' bike story. Even the guy we bought this off
That's a nice tight-sounding Norton .
