Smelt Dipping in Kelso, Washington
Smelt dipping was approved on February 14th, 2024 in Washington. About 90% of the smelt we caught were males which may suggest that it is early in the season if males swim upriver first.
The numbers are still low compared to previous years when it took 30 mins to an hr to catch your limit. We decided to skip the rest of this years dip in hopes that the females that run later will increase next years numbers.
Wear warm clothes and stay safe!

Nice we do the same at some of the beaches around metro Vancouver BC , as well netting as from the docks and Rocky drops off , Crabbing g is open year Round in British Columbia , and the limit is 4 a day a combination of Dungees and or Red Rocks
Long Beach - WA. I see. Thsnk you sir :)
Oh wow! May I ask where's this place _ bay ?
As a kid in the 1970s, we walked, saw a hole, tapped it, if it squirted, you dug As fast as you could by hand, angling toward the ocean. After digging was over, you added corn meal to the bucked of clams to flush out sand inside the clams as they ate/injested it.
What location is this at? Love your videos by the way!!
This is awesome!! Is now still a good time to go and catch Smelt at this location?
Thank you for posting this video and educating me and my son. We Crab a lot in the Tacoma and Seattle areas and we wish we could crab more often. Now I know thanks to you we can do it year round. I was reading up on Marine Area 2 and this is correct but it does state "must retain back shell while in the field" Does that mean we put the back shell off and just throw it back in the ocean? I'm not familiar with this process. I have only had to something similar with Oysters.
Some people clean the crabs at the beach/pier. So if you clean 3 crabs in the field (at beach or pier) you need to keep/retain the 3 of those back shells on your person. If you discard the back of the shell, you wouldn’t be able to prove it was a legal size if you were approach by the fish & wildlife game warden. Hopefully I explained that well for you.
I’m moving to the Tacoma area in a few months, are there any specific beaches you recommend for crabbing?
@@kaseyo6832 Yes, so many to name. But we crab right off the docks near Ruston, I think its called Les Davis Public Fishing Pier.
Where is this at sir?
How do you eat them?
Yum
Do you eat them or sell them?

Not many people caught their limits yesterday. We were even pulled over by the game warden since our bags were full haha.
This was in Long Beach, Washington
Not ok to take crabs and kill you have no right
I don’t blame you or others for feeling this way. I’d love to hear what you and others think of our thought process: 1. We would like to teach others that animals are intelligent and that we can catch our own food without harming other species. Many animals are injured or killed due to bycatch on a small to large scale. We like capturing crabs this way because it doesn’t result in bycatch and we learn about their intelligence this way. 2. It is also harmful to support non-organic agricultural fields that use pesticides that harm bugs, take land away from wildlife, or use synthetic nutrients that cause runoff to bodies of water. We try to grow everything we consume but that requires we make our own soil using animals we harvest. Sadly, organic sources for nitrogen, phosphorus, and calcium that support plant growth and nutrient intake come from decomposed animals. 3. It is harmful if we do not realize the importance of local and organic resources to support our own ecosystems. We should teach people to use food remains as an organic fertilizer/compost for native plants. Many of these native plants require nutrients to provide flowers for pollinators (bees, hummingbirds and butterflies) and berries for seed spreaders (rabbits, mice, squirrels, deer, and birds) year after year. We want to encourage more native plant growth using animals to help other parts of our ecosystem. 4. Majority of soils used for gardening use remains from animals like feather meal, bone meal, and leather dust. We prefer to make our own expensive soil and can teach others how to save money by creating their own soil as well. Hopefully this helps explain why we do what we do since I haven't addressed this. I'm currently working on a video on this but some details are in our community section ❤️.
So as long as anyone is following the laws and rules set by the State and Federal Government. Who gives YOU the right to tell anyone what they can and can not do?? Its liberals like YOU that think you own the world that are the problem today. If you don't like it, Mind your own business and move along.
Has every right. Might makes right and we are top of the food chain. Start acting like it!
Just leave crabs to live
I prefer a shovel
EACH TO HIS OWN; I USED A SHOVEL MY FIRST COUPLE OF DECADES, SWITCHED TO A GUN AND NEVER WENT BACK👍ENJOY
@@MrBatnuni to each his own...correct. thanks for sharing
That's it I am never walking bare foot on any beach

흥미로운 영상 😃👍🍀
감사합니다 ❤️☺️
Damn, that looks good.
TASTES GOOD TOO👍😉👋
It tastes similar to fried calamari when caught fresh ❤️
I can't imagine how many clam kills it takes to unlock the golden clam gun.
it's over 9,000!!
I USED TO NOTCH THE HANDLE, BUT WHEN I NEEDED TO REPLACE IT FOR THE SEVENTH TIME, I GAVE UP ON THAT😂
I can smell it through the screen 🤤
DELICIOUS SMELL, HUH?🤗
The last part definitely smelled fantastic!
That's grand! I live 7hours away from the beach. But I try to dig every season! It makes for a fabulous vacation and gallons of clan chowder!!
PERSONALLY, I PREFER CLAM CHOWDER, AS OPPOSED TO “clan chowder”, WHERE I GUESS YOU CONSUME VARIOUS MEMBERS OF YOUR FAMILY, BUT EACH TO HIS OWN😉
Same! I’ll have about 2-3 gallons of clam chowder after 1 dig.
Last summer my brother cut his foot on one and that same day, week, month my friend cut his foot on glass same beach ⛱️ 😂
SORRY
I’m not sure if it is you that is cursed or the beach… but keep us updated!
I went clamming there, there is so many clams!
Nice!
THANK YOU MOST KINDLY😉
You really had fun editing this one, and it shows.
Thank you for noticing! I wanted to slowly introduce our humor at some point haha.
Which place in washington is this at?
This is in Long Beach, Washington ❤️
Trust me, I hate what I'm about to say, too. He caught the fish in the net, then passed it to another person. So he who smelt it, dealt it.
That was a good one 😂😂❤️
"AMAZING Animal Encounters" Sprays birb with hose. 😐
Haha it does look intense without context 😂 I had like 20 chickadees that started to shower in the hose water while I watered the garden last summer. Then they would fly into the pine branches to preen themselves against the branches like it is a car wash. Even though we have a bird bath. The banditry of chickadees don’t come around unless I’m watering the garden and would often fly into the line of fire. I’ll see if I can record all of them do that this summer.
@@journeywithchong Using the collective noun for a group of animals? /Swoon./
@@Brankenhoffer Learning the collective noun is one of my favorite parts of watching groups of animals. Especially crows lol
@@Brankenhoffer BETTER THAN birb WHEN REFERRING TO A BIRD😂
@MrBatnuni I consider any avain smaller than your fist a birb. And birbs are cute. Lol
Great show thank you.
Our pleasure!! Thank you for watching!
I love the bird-like sound of the clam gun going into wet sand. It reminds me of a bald eagle's cackle. Also, the old man seems fun to hang out with.
