Cautious Coot
Determined and adaptable, this coot made its way from a snowy shoreline into cold, free-flowing water. There, with strong legs and large-lobed toes, it gracefully waded in search of food.

This Barred Owl and I frequently visit the woods near the Bedford, MA, reservoir. I am always delighted at our encounters; the owl is more guarded. We both enjoy the hardwood trees and nearby water. These surroundings invite me into the beauty of the natural world, for the owl, perched on a well-elevated branch, it is the ideal place to scan for its next meal.

This Green-Winged Teal Duck, the smallest of the dabbling ducks, was taking a much-needed rest after working hard with its flock to find food along the icy shoreline of a small pond.

While I braced myself against the cold and relentless wind on Plumb Island, MA, this young, immature female Snowy Owl remained almost motionless. Her confidence invited me to resist my thoughts of returning quickly to my car.

The river flats in Marshland, MA are home to this endangered Harrier Hawk. Watching this scene helped me resolve to live each moment of the New Year with clear intent.

I watched this pair of mute swans resting on the bright blue water of a cranberry bog reservoir. Then, the temperature dropped into the teens for several days. When I returned, the blue water had become black ice, thick enough to hold the white bodies of the swans.
Unity in Flight

I stopped suddenly as I walked across the dike trail at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord, MA. Above me, a large flock of Canada Geese ascended into the cold blue morning sky. I was captivated by the kaleidoscopic patterns they created and by their unity, which appeared much greater than any humankind has achieved.

The laughing call of a Pileated Woodpecker greeted me as I entered the woods. I continued walking until I heard it again. This time, the laugh was accompanied by a heavy pounding sound. I stood quietly for a long time. Then suddenly, I noticed small wood chips falling in front of me. I looked up, and twenty feet above me was the red-headed blackbird hard at work.
No Common Eider

Big and lethargic are words often used to describe the Common Eider. This “common human” found nothing lethargic about this female Eider as she gracefully landed in blue water and seemed to enjoy a bright winter day.
Create Thanksgiving

Last spring, I enjoyed taking and sharing this video of a wild turkey. Loss and gratitude combined as I watched these images during this Thanksgiving week knowing how many of this wild turkey’s domesticated cousins will die to help us celebrate gratitude as we gather with friends and family.

At first, I thought this muskrat was swimming randomly without a clear destination. Then it picked up speed and moved with clear intent toward its home among cattails.

A Great Blue Heron, feeding in shallow marsh waters, had captured our attention. Then JoAnn spotted this Green Heron walking along the shoreline. At that moment I realized I am all too often distracted by color and flare to see the beauty blending naturally into the background.

At the Forsythe Wildlife Refuge in southern New Jersey, these White Ibis (juvenile, immature, and adult) gathered to enjoy a meal together. Such a simple and beautiful gift.

Wonderful.! I was walking at the edge of a foggy pond in northern California at daybreak when a flock of geese lifted off and flew up over my head. I raised my hand up and touched the soft belly of a goose. It was a thrill I will never forget! Thanks for reminding me of that moment.
