I met a Bel Mal at an outdoor brewery over the summer. I learned a long time ago from experience that when the dog's handler is present, they typically start to become wary of strangers. They're actually very friendly dogs once you get to know them, but refrain from touching their ears or getting your face too close until the dog starts to trust you a bit more. Fortunately for me, the Bel Mal I met at the brewery was a nice guy and didn't exhibit any signs of hostility towards me. I probably would have been traumatized or simply too paranoid to ever pet a Bel Mal again otherwise.
