Andy's World of Old School Windsurfing
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 24 เม.ย. 2015
This channel initially got going at the latter end of 2015 based on a home made bracket to hold an old waterproof digital camera to the top of the mast when windsurfing in a gale! Some of the early videos on the channel show this quite well. Since then I have progressed into cheap 'gopro' type cameras and still mainly film windsurfing and on-water adventures in the kayak too. I mostly windsurf in and around Poole in the UK. Most people who have subscribed or who comment on videos seem to be interested in the 'old school' element, using windsurfing gear from the past (80s/90s) and still getting some useful fun using this older and cheaper gear. I like all aspects of windsurfing and still use some classic gear from the past. Nevertheless, there is no particular aim or purpose to the channel, nor any production values- most videos go up unedited, showing a 'real' sessions with all the 'imperfections'. Comments, suggestions and offers of free kit are always welcome! Andy :)

A very nice board..Picked up windsurfing this summer after 27years stop.. This Presto is faster than I thought. Have modern fast board like Isonic. But this Presto is still my fastest board in choppy conditions... Got it to 30,5 knots
The shaper Werner Gnigler, of JP, developed the Phoenix while in South Africa for F2. I believe I have one of the earlier production models in blue deck white hull. The rocker at the nose appears to be less than on the board I have. I am substituting the slot gaskets with LT type, a bit of a mod - hopefully it works out fine and will keep for the life of the board. Would like to try the board with a more race orientated daggerboard, the stock plastic one, I feel. doesn't do the board justice. Hope to see this board on a plane in future videos. A comparison of the Lightning WC race and Phoenix on a plane would be nice too. Reason for the Phoenix in my quiver was for lighter air conditions which includes some shorebreak which a lightning race is not built for. A bit more hybrid in the Phoenix with race course pointing when the urge grabs one. Shoutout to Mr. Gnigler from Sunny ZA.
nice audio
Andy hi, love the videos! Given you have direct use of them both, at what point would you usually switch down from the Explosion 2 to the Screamer 2? Also, have you ever had a chance to ride a similar gen Echo? I'm trying to find out how it compares to the Screamer 2 ... obviously 20l more volume and slightly narrower rear straps but not sure how these differences manidesft on the water haha
@@simonbadcock5522 Nice They are all good boards Screamer versus explosion - screamer better in more wind and will handle more chop and blown out conditions. The explosion would be the one if it was marginal and you want maximum speed on all points of sail including upwind plus that bit more sail carrying capacity due to the extra volume. The echo is modelled more on the screamer than the explosion, very 'freeride' rather than race style. I had a second gereration echo with the scooped deck, lovely loose and agile board considering the volume and it has a good turn of speed. I didn't get the use as I use my longboards a lot and at the point that they are planing can then go straight to a 120L ish board without needing the bigger volume of something like the echo. But for a first short board or a light wind option (with no longboard) the echo is great. With the echo, the quite wide squash tail and progressive rocker line are quite visible and it planes early and gybes well for such and old board. Both the screamer and echo are lively and responsive and make you want to throw them around a bit in the corners, see how tight they will turn. The explosion has that quite thoroughbred locked in slalom board racing feel, quite hard on the ankles when rattling over the chop, but the one where you can really scare yourself with the top end speed. Hope that helps!
@@andysworldofoldschoolwindsurf Thank you so much for the context ...I feel like this needs to be 'stickied' somehow but I really appreciate the comparison. I'd love them all (an Energizer especially) but sounds like the Explosion might suit a more blasting vs carving agenda and keep the Screamer for the crazy days (although I've heard my Malibu S is meant to be pretty fun when it's honking). I'll have to keep my eyes open as I've seen plent of Gen 1 Explosions (very forward mast track doesn't balance as well with modern sails?) and the later model Explosions (CGI) when they moved the straps inboard similar to the Echo and ditched the adjustable mast track, but people clearly hold onto these Gen 2's ;-)
@@simonbadcock5522 Thanks The Mk1 explosion is really good. The track should be okay with modern-ish sails although you would find you are using the rear half of the track more than the front. On the Mk1, it has a very dedicated slalom board feel and it's a great board for straight line blasting. It is also practical enough as some of the racing boards of the era had very low rocker and really needed the conditions 'just so' otherwise the disadvantages of the handling really outweigh any speed benefits of the faster shape - where the explosion is a good all rounder for what it is. I know exactly what you mean re the Malibu. They have great potential as a blaster in moderate winds. I always liked having access to the dagger board on it to help with getting upwind and to help tracking if the wind drops - but someone showed me an example where they had actually filled in the dagger board slot and used the Malibu with a slalom blade fin, really to turn it into a 'speed machine' - it certainly worked well.
I've had both an 86? and 88 Ultra Cat - sold the early one which had the "rad" graphics at that time to a younger sailor in our group to get the 88 which had the larger dagger and deeper skeg and my favorite graphics between the two which I lost in the end due to the beach hut concession/board storage facility unexpectedly closing when they lost their license with everything disappearing without advance notice, luckily had the gear bag stored at a StoreAll facility off site - that was itself broken into and cleaned out! In all, we lost two Fanatics, Ultra Cat and Viper, plus all our gear, wet suits, water sox, harness setups, everything... except the dagger boards and a couple booms and RAFs which which I still have; sad reminders of what is/was one of our great joys. I love Ultra Cats. There is little that compares with the gratification that comes by way of a big race board with a 6.5m sail on a steady 23+ wind on a long screaming reach with the gap closed and your ass kissing the spray. What I'd give to do that and fell like that again, it's nearly on par with a long afternoon of sex. Well, maybe not... but I feel the same about skiing! That was nearly 40 yrs ago - at my age I'd probably pass out. ;-) Always wanted an F2 Lightning Race and Mistral - maybe Equipe but definitely a Malibu for its width and displacement.
You have positioned the mast in the most backward position. Is this recommended (with modern sails)?
@@datschist yes, near the back as the track is quite far forward on these old boards. I do move it forward 1 notch from the back for the biggest sail size 7.5m otherwise the tail of the board sinks!
@@andysworldofoldschoolwindsurf Thanks for the answer. Sailed my Rabbit this season with 6.4m2 always on a medium track position. Next time i will try to move the mast more backwards ;-)
Wow, what a beauty!
I have got the same one and I love it! It just gets faster, not louder!!!
You really should use glasses as a minimum with a grinder. I know guys who have had the discs explode into their faces, it happens.
What a beauty 🙂
Good use of the "safety squint" there
I like the BIC logo on your sail. Long time no see anymore, Tahe, what is Tahe?
Cool!
I had a great afternoon of longboarding at Torpoint. Mistral Equipe and Gun Sails Tempo 8.1. First time I've used that sail, has two cams. I got it for £15 😊
@@flamingskoda bargain! Love it 😊😊
Cool! Cool board!
Saild my cat 380 yesterday and my ultra cat(1989) last week, such great boards to sail on
I never see these boards in the States. I wish I did... Cool Cats.
Lovely to see!
I loved my Presto!
😂
Used to love my old BIC Rumba, on a Rushwind 5'7 it was so versatile struggled on an NP 6'4 though. Many moons ago. legs knackered now but great fun.
That really is absolutely fabulous, i bet that really impresses the neighbours!
Love the bamba. A great classic !
I like the good old Mickey Eskimo design on the very colorful BIC Bords. Happy sailing
Agree. The Bic are great looking boards for the era. I like the Fanatic aztec graphics too!
Wow, a Bamba! Amazing!
Very distinctive board!
Going really quite nicely in very little wind. It looks like the wind is gusting to force three. I wonder how much difference there really is between the windspeed needed to get a relatively light old-school long board going relative to a foil setup. I'm looking around for a longer old board for summer. It's what I learned on orignally. Thanks for uploads.
We get a good test of that around here as there are some really good foil sailors. They get going quicker than I do. Even when I cannot get railing with the dagger board down, they can be fully lit up. Mind you, these are very good foil sailors on the right gear. They are using big sails and not on the 'casual' stuff! Nevertheless these old longboards are great and you have to remember it all balances as the foil guys have quite a 'slog' on their hands until they find enough wind!
That was fantastic! And thank you jen for making the film and thank you annie for being annie. (we don't half miss you guys)gdadxx
un deux trois and aaaa-chtung. 🤣
😂😂😂
love it... I am on the search for some old Fanatic boards right now, would love to find a rabbit.
They beat aloha class back then with light long boards i think ;) Didn't have a chance to surf too much on those as i was ending my time with windsurfing for years to come >.<
I brought the race tech version of this board second hand the other week but as I was having a look around it I noticed that the daggerboard slot flushers were very stiff and didn’t like letting the dagger go down 😂 i was just wondering if you know were I could get some new ones although I am a planing inter in the foot straps and harness and don’t need the dagger to go upwind it would still be nice to have it
Nice. If you are UK based, boardwise in Cannock would be able to help
Hi, is the mast base (joint) on this compatible with any mast extension (base) with EU pin system? My old mast extension base pulleys are no more! Thx u.
So this version of the board had the 'fin box' type mast fitting where any deckplate/ screw down type mast fitting can go on there. I believe some versions had the 'pin type' fitting where the uj attached via a pin to a sliding mast track carriage - if you have this and need a new mast base you can find a wider 'chinook nut' that will enable a standard base to fit, though you do end up with a fixed mast base position and can't then slide the track whilst sailing. Realise that is a lot to try to describe when TH-cam comments only let us share text. If unsure please send me some photos on what you have to walters1979andy@gmail.com. Best Andy
@@andysworldofoldschoolwindsurf My bad! Actually the part I need is just the 'trim adaptor' (due to broken pulleys)for my old rumba. But I'm not sure which one to buy,is this part standard (EU pin) across all boards? Thx u very much for your reply.
@@paolomh113 by trim adapter I think you mean the mast extension - the bit you thread the rope into to downhaul. Most of those are standard to euro base and would make it obvious if they were not. Decathlon may still sell them. Appreciate we could be crossing threads as it is hard to describe some of this stuff. If I have missed something use the email address in my first message and send a photo of what you have and I can send you a few web links etc for potential parts!
Cool!

good upwind ability in no-planning condition, even without daggerboard... but when you get planning it doesn't accelerate well and needs to go downwind (same sensation with my Astrorock : it's like you have two different boards while planning or not....)
I remember the Astro rock! Great board in many ways. Agree I think where Bic sat in the lineup was good value but quite low performance and of course they were heavy boards. This Rumba board was good in its time for early forays into planing but needed a lot of encouragement to get it going and hard to stay close to the wind without the dagger board once it was lit up.
not too tight board in the chop ?
It's a very light and stiff slalom board. Goes over the chop well but hard on the ankles and quite an extreme and uncompromising ride in many ways. Amazing fun but not the easiest going board out there. Still quite fast for such an old board (probably about 1993 era)
That was my baby, the 285 brought much joy into my life, especially overpowered here in eastern caribbean
I bought the f2 sputnik 285 back in 1995, i cant believe they still making these
Hes superdog!! He,ll be taking you surfing next!!
Cool.
Many thanks blaspelegrin4060. Happy sailing and tight harness lines!
Just enough puff to get planing then! Nice sail Andy. I can't wait to get on the water again. Not long now!
Yes, it was really light, much less at some points and you'd question whether worth trying, but some good runs nevertheless. Another guy out on the foil and he was doing really well. Quite amazing that with barely enough wind for me to heel the board over into railing from the beating straps, he was lit up and flying. Big investment in kit obviously but very impressive!
LOL, i didnt know Paul is in this movie Sure, Lemmy overshadowed him
Lemmie and everyone else eclipsed lame Paul - especially the too-subversive to be famous lead actors - all infinitely more talented than the likes of DeNiro, 'Dame' Judi Dench etc that our anti-rebellious establishment media wants us to hero-worship... Paul G
Everyone overshadowed lame feeble McCartney - especially all of the poor p!ssed-off dangerous revolutionaries..
Im happy, living without him. I dont miss him. Im no maso. Ally had no idea what Tina ment with her song. Love them al <3
Good chop hopper, but bl**dy narrow!
100%- I shall do a video of the board by itself one day- the rear of the board at the footstrap is about the length of my foot- and I am not a big guy- which makes foot placement in the gybes kind of interesting. That narrow width does give that feeling of bottomless acceleration though, and I really like that. The board also really forces me to try and sail it well, it is not easy going at all!
Missile.
100%- I have had a few of the Sputnik boards and none of them are 'half-measures'- fast, fast boards and really quite hair-raising once they are lit up and approaching warp speed, usually with me still trying to get my feet into the footstraps properly!
rocketship, if you keep your eyes peeled these types come up forcsale here and there. i have the F2 raceboard version of this era.
Nice- you have a very good board then. I do keep an eye out as I am always interested in boards of this era and the price is often very good. I do like the uncompromising speed and acceleration of this board- it is me that holds it back rather than the board holding me back, and that is a good feeling!
was it a littlebit overpowered? good speed👍 Btw I ordered new shrink tube for boom but this time I glued it inside and now there is no twisting...
It was not too overpowered when filming but afterwards it started to get pretty crazy, mega crashes. I think you have found the right way by gluing the boom grip. What I have is 'functional' but as you can see it has twisted itself around and is not as smooth as it could be. I think the material has 'un-shrunk' with time as it is a lot looser than when I heat-gunned it on there. A good experiment though as the boom itself had very little grip left in the places where you actually need it!
