National Anthem of the United States: Star-Spangled Banner
ENGLISH: "The Star-Spangled Banner" is the national anthem of the United States. The lyrics come from the "Defence of Fort M'Henry", a poem written by American lawyer Francis Scott Key on September 14, 1814, after he witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British Royal Navy during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. The poem was set to the tune of a popular British song written by John Stafford Smith for the Anacreontic Society, a social club in London. Smiths' song, "To Anacreon in Heaven" (or "The Anacreontic Song"), with various lyrics, was already popular in the United States. On March 3, 1931, the U.S. Congress passed a resolution making the song the official national anthem of the United States.

The text was written from the point of view of William of Orange, who had always been loyal to the King of Spain when the Netherlands were under Spanish rule. However, the song showed his dilemma between supporting the Dutch people or remaining loyal to the King. The last line is his conclusion, he had always honoured him, but that’s in the past and he chose his people.

The tune for the Dutch national anthem is one of my favorites: its hymnlike quality is reminiscent of the Lutheran chorales (though I know the Dutch are mostly Calvinist), which makes sense given its sixteenth-century origins. I'd like to suggest the Finnish and Swedish anthems for future coverage. Both have lovely and inspiring melodies, especially the Finnish, which is so simple yet hauntingly beautiful.

I love Dutch anthem. Melody is beautiful. Music and lyrics are full of good emotions and hope. Words are deep, patriotic, God-praising, extoling freedom over tyrrany and loyality to homeland at the same time. Greetings from Poland.

The Wilhelmus has to be one of the most beautiful and enticing national anthems in the entire world 😎 But as a Dutchman I absolutely do want to say the following: If it were not for the 1st Polish Independent Parachute Brigade my beloved country might have never been liberated at all. We owe Major General Sosabowski and his brave Polish soldiers the utmost respect and eternal gratitude for their efforts! ❤🤍💙

There was no direct term for the Dutch people at the time. We were referred to as “Nederduits”, or “Dietsch”. It is not a reference to the current German people, but a clear reference to what later became known as Nederlands, hence the English translation for Nederlands (both language and people) is “Dutch”.
Wilhelm I Fürst von Oranien, Graf von Nassau- Dillenburg wurde am 24.04.1533 in Dillenburg geboren. Ihr Hinweis auf eine damals nicht existente Bezeichnung Niederlande ist hier völlig unerheblich. Ebenso die heutige englische Übersetzung des Begriffs. Und da er nun einmal nicht in den heutigen oder damaligen Niederlanden geboren wurde, ist die Bezeichnung ,,von niederländischem Blut eben nicht korrekt.
