Enjoyed the video, some good ideas, i love that you obviously are trying to get the congregation to sing. There is nothing worse than playing at a funeral, no one is singing and its All things bright and beautiful and you don't know what verse you're on!. Love to hear your improvisation ideas.
Thank you so much. You are so right about funerals. Even the classics nobody sings much. So true. Improvisation video coming within about 3 weeks. Thanks again for watching!
What are your thoughts, Joe, on using 16 foot flues, or sub couplers in the manuals during a hymn? Do you like to, or do you think the texture gets muddy, and loses clarity if you do?
Excellent question. Here at the Basilica I have a soft 16 foot Bourdon in the Swell that gives just enough bottom texture. I’m all for it if it’s not too big. With the sub couplers I use them at the end of a big hymn especially if I take the right hand up an octave. On a small organ especially you can make it sound twice as big!
Oh yeah, agreed. Whenever I hear Praise To The Lord The All Mighty, that brings me back to my days still as a student at the W. Ross MacDonald school for the blind. Got into the organ there back in 2004, during my last two years there. They have a three-manual 1961 Casavant there, and that was one of the first things I'd learned on it. Hopefully it's still in good condition. Last I'd played it in 2018, it was. It's in a very dry space acoustically though, unlike what you've got at the Basilica there. Love the acoustics in the basilica by the way. @@musicatthebasilica
Re intros - I'm never quite sure whether to play the first line of a hymn or the last as an intro. For Love Divine, the tune Blaenwern (or Hyfrydol which I prefer), the first part of the melody is repeated so the first two lines of the hymn are a good intro and the congregation know when to start singing. But for other hymn tunes there's nowhere easy to stop without abruptly leaving it "hanging". If you use the last part of the melody as an intro, then it's obvious where to start singing, as long as the congregation know it well. But if they don't know it so well, not all of them may remember how the melody starts. Many thanks for this video, I found it really useful.
I completely get it. I always want the intro to be long enough to give them time to open the hymn book and find the page. For HYFRYDOL I will personally take the whole last half of the hymn. I’d rather the intro be too long than not long enough that they feel defeated because they never arrived at the right page before the hymn begins. You are so correct that you can modify your intros if the congregation knows the hymn well. Thank you so much for watching!
Thank you! I’d appreciate that improv video!
Absolutely! Coming this way in 2-3 weeks. Thank you so much for watching!
Rawsthorne - yes!! Great content - echoes of my own early training, use of reeds, mixtures, couplers, registration, phrasing. My teacher used to say “gotta grab their interest and keep it.” Thank you ! Would love to see something on improvisation. Also psalm settings with a cantor. All best wishes from Wyoming.
Thank you so much for watching! I will certainly make the next video (within 3 weeks) about improvisation and I’d be happy to do some content with psalm settings and a cantor. Absolutely.
Thank you so very much. What is your name? I am a beginning church organist, and this is really very helpful. - Matt, Mendocino, California www.youtube.com/@mattleach958
Thank you so much for watching. My name is Joe. A big hello to beautiful California! Keep at it. Please let me know if there is anything we can help with. So nice to see new organists getting started!
@@joecarere6721 Thank you Joe! I will surely be requesting more ideas. A video from you about improvising would be great. I know so many musicians who can play perfectly live sight-reading, but are incapable of improvising.
Absolutely wonderful! You sure make the Casavant sing!
Thank you so much (number 1 fan)! The support is so appreciated!
A question about the celeste ranks in this organ, do they all go all the way down to bottom c? I've come across some organs where a celeste will end at tenor c, or g in the bottom octave, but not go all the way down to bottom c.
That is a great question. The Celeste’s do in fact only go down to tenor C.
ah ok, cool. @@musicatthebasilica
So beautiful! My late organ teacher, Douglas Haas, studied with Germani in Rome back in the 'sixties sometime. . . .

FYI, take it from an experienced electronics repair person : if you have that much visible corrosion on the unused pins, and especially that much visible rust on the screws, you should plan at a minimum replacing those pin headers and the multi position plug that plugs onto them. The corrosion and rust is inside the plug, header, and wires. That'll be your permanent fix. Also, while the PCB is off the cabinet for the work, it'll give you a good chance to look inside behind it and verify all is well back there, too. Once properly remedied you should be good to go for a long long long time as long as you keep it from getting corroded again ...
That is definitely the plan moving forward in the Fall. With the organ played daily we can’t afford to have it down, especially with that. Not to mention it picks Sunday of course! Thanks for watching friend and reinforcing my thoughts on the corrosion.
We were sitting in the pew wondering what happened and missing the organ. Glad it is a quick fix!
Looks like it’s all good to go now. It played fine for about 6 hours today! Fingers crossed. Thanks so much for watching!
Always good to have Robert coming, he's the king! Several years ago, when Simon Irving was organist there, there was a solid state overhaul, I think, and he had to register with the crescendo pedal, but he had it all worked out, and he made it work for a few months, if I recall correctly. Robert helped him register the cresc. so he could know on the dial when the reeds came blasting in, for example. So he had no stops for a period of time. Glad the situation is working again, my friends!
I remember that! The Crescendo meter had a homemade label on it. Very clever I thought. Now it’s all computerized with programmable Crescendo and 250 levels of memory. I’ll never forget when it had only 3 Generals. Thanks so much for watching friend!
Praise the Lord, the problem has been identified and fixed. A worrying time for you guys, your repairer is a top man.
Thank you so much. It sure is bizarre and first and hopefully last time it happens. Robert is legend!
