207. Women's rights and The Handmaid's Tale
Discussing the contextual details which helped create the novel, published in 1985. Assuming the novel is called a political and social protest novel, this seminar focuses on the following:
- utopia versus dystopia
- America: egalitarian democracy or fundamentalist theocracy?
- reproductive rights as a political (rather than personal) issue
- issues with the US Constitution and restricting abortion
- feminism and the mistakes of Second-Wave feminists.
Central questions:
Who has control of a woman’s body?
Does the state own you?
Is your private life truly private?
Are certain laws needed for the survival of the country?
If you have given women new rights (e.g. as a result of Second-wave feminism), how do you take those rights away, and what do you do if they don’t want their rights removed?

I'm english speaking I know most english words this seems very difficult my school was a bit of a muck about but unless you knuckle down and have a disciplined school I can't imagine any school kid writing like this let alone someone who wasn't a native english speaker I remember being terrible at english in primary but I wrote about the environment in say 1996 I do belive I was a clever child but I belive the grades was graded at 3 4 5 I belive I got 3 four so this mean I was average and then people who where a but challenged would get 3 and people who could spell or was intelligent got 5s this was primary and this was flawed when I let school without gcse I also looked back at english and maths gcse as very hard I mean there was test after test you had to read Shakespeare then you would have to do course work this was just one part of the test I belive the system is broken as you can see my english is not that good I don't have time to do commas I'm more of a thinker like a doctor my sister got 6 gcse and I can tell you she is boardline backward yeah I'm writing about english not political correctness if I was a child today I was focus on the subjects I knew I could pass then think what I want to do understand my skills and do a appentership
I absolutely love your videos! I have mocks for A dolls house next week! Pls keep updating ❤
For the ‘salt tears pepper our soup’, perhaps this could further portray the idea of false appearances? That the salt is not actually what it seems? The idea that one thing is dressed up as another, like her house, which is represented as so neat and proper, though this is a façade for the difficulties experienced by the speaker?
really helpful video thanks, Ive got my mock tomorrow! But I've heard that you need to use at least 2 poems as well as The Importance of Being Earnest otherwise you won't get any marks for this question.
Hi! Not sure wether you’re AS or A level, but in your actual A level exam you will only have to compare earnest with either emma or a poem :)
@@Anya-pu8em thanks! I don't know why I was given no marks with a comment saying at least 2 poems on my mock exam then
😅😊😊😊😊
the sound is slow
Hey matt ! Thanks for the wonderful explanation It helped me a lot. Love from India ❤❤
Thanks brother ❤
Just wanted to comment and say, I think it was actually Cecily who made the comment about 'shallow masks of manner' instead of Gwendoline in Act 2. Thank you though!
Please, is there an analysis for Act 2?
Thank you for this very useful video.
Can you explain to a young lady by William cowper please 🙏

Scots is a distinct language with its own grammar and vocabulary, not just a dialect of English. It's got a rich history and literature! 🏴
where is this extract from please?
I really need help with question 3 paper 1 please help me
The poem is relatable to our situation in these days
Thanks for these videos. What would be required to reach the full 12 marks in a question like this? I struggle with English Language so would really like some sort of baseline to go off of. Cheers.
Thank you!!
Welcome!

just read the poem and felt sad after reading it as an adult who thinks my best days are my childhood so I'm searching for videos about the poem now 😢
Hi Sir, I hope you are well. Is it possible you could do a deeper analysis of the kite runner chapters- such as the quotes?
I was teaching TKR today and thought about it. Watch this space!
@@englishwithmatt1735 Thank you Sir, I am quite struggling with it as it’s new to me haha
I am currently studying theories of comedy in my English 1100 class and my professor mentioned Bakhtin's theory of the Carnivalesque. I didn't quite understand it, but this video clarified it perfectly. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! That sounds like an interesting course
Good morning, nice video 😃😃😃

Truly invaluable analysis. Thank you!
Welcome!
Please give lecture on this topic Comic features in The Importance of Being Earnest
thank you Matt x
Matt - I’m indebted to you as a teacher
Thanks mate! It really helped 😇
Welcome!
This is WONDERFUL for me, as a teacher of this new Spec. Thank you! Is it always the case for this Spec that introductions are unnecessary/superfluous? If so, I will one hundred per cent teach your method of attacking the question immediately in a sort of thesis statement/topic sentence for the whole essay so it has clear direction and drive that remains focused.
Hello! For spec B, section A extract-based questions are where students need intros as this allows them space to write an overview which the exam board favours. For section B and C answers, intros can become time wasters as students either don't answer the question or just list stuff they know about the text(s). Far better to start discussing the task asap. Remember that students can wholly agree, wholly disagree or partly agree/disagree with the statement in the question (if it's a 'what extent do you agree') - the questions are deliberately written to prompt debate. I'm sure I'll upload many more videos in the next academic year!
I would basically do absolutely anything right now to be able to talk more with you about how this all works. I have directed my students to your videos!
@@rainbowdolly happy to answer any emails about it or have a zoom/google meet englishwithmatt6@gmail.com
Got an A in English Literature !!! The past 2 years i've only ever gotten Cs, thank you so much for your help! ✨
That's fantastic! Many congratulations!
Hello sir, can I ask a doubt? Is Baba just a symbol of hypocrisy and failure? Isn't he also I don't know proud and virtuous (especially while saving the woman on the truck, building orphanages, giving alms etc)
I don't think he is just that - I think he could also be seen as having courage and pride, such in his rejection of American welfare (General Taheri the opposite) or refusal to have chemotherapy. Baba could also be seen as a victim that, despite being a wealthy Pashtun, he only left his homeland with a suitcase (ironically all that Ali and Hassan left with too).
@englishwithmatt1735 thank you sir
Hi! im really struggling with the historical context and what influences Margaret Atwoods writing, i have an oral presentation and IM stuggling to understand, can you please help 😭😭😭
