First attempt on a Gruesome Gary trail. I'm not too happy how I picked the lines, but to be fair - I was very worn at this point (after about 30 miles of riding in the park)

Trying Renz single tracks for the first time. Absolutely loved how nice and flowy those are. Although they considered hard, I found them to be easier than majority of the Metcalf trails

Yaesu FT5DR knobs issue
มุมมอง 1.2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Too much friction between the two coaxial VFO and Volume knobs causing them to turn together when I’m adjusting the volume, causing frequency to change as well. FIX: I pulled knobs apart and it turned out that two washers between knobs weren’t fitted properly. Larger spacer has a beveled edge that supposed to be faced towards the lower knob. It was turned other way, not sitting flush with the l...

    I was able to take a small screwdriver and take the knobs off easily with minimal guidance. I usually have little talent for things that I am not familiar so it is not very daunting. I did not note a frosty side of either washer. Flipping the washers over and reinstalling and the knobs now move independently and smoothly.

    I ran into the same problem. Two washers flew out when I pulled out the upper knob. I put the frosted side of the larger washer facing down to solve the problem. But I don’t know which side of the smaller washer should be facing down? Could you help me, thank you.

      I didn’t remember so I pulled my knobs off again to check. My parts are in following order from the bottom to the top: 1. Large knob 2. Small washer (frosted side down) 3. Large washer (frosted side down) 4. Small knob I don’t think orientation of small washer really matters. It just supports the center of the larger washer. Larger washer lays flat/leveled with edges of the large knob. I’m not saying it’s correct way to assemble these knobs and washers, but it definitely works for me better then when small washer was placed above large washer. I put the smaller washer on top of the bottom knob first (don’t think it matters what side is facing up, but mine is oriented with smooth side up

      I just purchased an FT5DR and has the knob issue out of the box. Just wanted to say a quick thank you! I was able to pry the small knob up with my fingers and orientated everything like you described and both knobs work MUCH better now! No more sticking and changing things I didn't mean to.

  • @jaybarr3307

    My new FT5DR radio has this issue as well. Hate the thought of bringing it back as HRO is about 90 mins away and I'm sure they'll tell me they need to send it to Yaesu. Plus, l already have some repeaters in, settings configured, etc. I saw the fix note in the description above but you must have fingers like a vice as neither knob will budge when I pull it very firmly. Would LOVE to see a follow up video on how you corrected this. Living with it for the moment and it's a real nuisance. Often, when I go to change the volume I end up switching channels or frequencies and cutting off the person I'm listening to.

    • @awesomedn
      @awesomedn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel your pain. This issue isn't worth of going through return process and waiting for a fix or replacement that can come with the same issue. There is a thin notch/cutout on the bottom edge of the upper knob. You can insert a thin flat screwdriver there and pry the knob off the shaft. Just be careful and hold the screwdriver perpendicular to the shaft, or you may mare the plastic, since it's kind'a soft. Also make sure to do this in front of some bag to catch the know and washers if they'll go flying.

    • @jaybarr3307
      @jaybarr3307 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@awesomedn Thanks, I was trying that and afraid to mare the knob or the o-ring/seal underneath. I tried something else, and seems to be working, can't say how long it'll go. I held the radio in my right hand with my thumb on the bottom of it and my first two fingers on the top of the outer knob. Then, I did similar with my left hand, putting that thumb on top of the other and my other two first fingers on the top of the first two. Then, with the leverage of both hands, I squeezed the outer knob downward, toward the radio. And, it seems to have worked. The outer knob hasn't moved the inner one in about 20 revolutions in each direction now. Sadly, I don't think this will be a lasting solution and, if the washer is backwards, as you indicated above, this isn't gonna do the trick long term. I don't know that I can get that knob off, feels like it's been glued on (know it isn't) but wow, is it on there. I looked on line for an exploded diagram so I could see what I'm dealing with, but I couldn't find one. Thanks for your speedy reply and interest. Betting your instructions in the description will help a great many but it only shows the problem, sadly, not the solution you figured out.

      @@jaybarr3307 well, you know what to do when the issue returns. I filmed this video before I fixed the issue, to post it online to see if anyone faced it too and how it was solved. Actual fix was done later, and I just updated the description under the video.

      @jaybarr3307 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@awesomedn Came back to say that just pressing downward, forcefully, on the outer knob seems to have worked. Been several days of use; the issue hasn't happened once. I think the interference must've been very slight and this has relieved it. I did find a video where a guy demonstrated taking the knobs off (it was a full tear-down video). He used a plastic swedge shaped like a guitar pick, but bigger and stronger, to force the knob up and off without marring it or damaging the gasket. Knob went flying though. Would really advise against using a screwdriver or something metal for this. The knob is super tight and does go flying so the suggestion of putting a bag over it, or pointing it towards an open box or something, is a good idea so you don't lose anything. But, I've lucked out, pressing it hard worked, so I won't need to do.

    Mine did this too, straight out of the box. I'm concerned about pulling knobs off and reassembling, and how that might impact the IPX7 rating of the radio. This seems like something that Yaesu QA should have had a better handle on. I thought that the only ham radio company that required dis-/reassembly of their products immediately after unboxing was MFJ.

    • @awesomedn
      @awesomedn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree about QA part. But you shouldn’t be concerned about waterproofness. It has nothing to do with how those knobs are fitted, since seal is between the metal shaft and metal collar/body around the shaft. Plastic knobs are just friction fitted at the end of shaft
