The death rate from FGM in Africa is estimated to be as high as 1%.The death rate from the rite of passage circumcisions performed on boys is definitely not zero (from South African news reports of boys dying after being circumcised). The problem with both procedures is that they are performed in traditional highly septic ways. There are no studies of the long term damage to adult sex lives arising from the circumcision of boys, and from the less extreme forms of FGM performed on girls. It is conceivable that the risks to adult sex lives does not vary much by gender.

Both are equally wrong when it comes to the ethical and moral argument and definitely a human rights violation. If you really think about it they are taking a new human being, strapping them down and cutting on their most personal and intimate part of their body. 45% are still done with no local anesthesia and if pain management is used it is extremely insufficient and has been shown to rewire the infants brain due to severe pain.. If you really delve into understanding the practice it is just another form of torturous pedophilia. The health benefits are very embellished for the male and are questionable at best but the sexual damage is significant. The complication rate is approximately 3-4% that is never reported by the CDC and other health organizations. Nothing is reported on meatus stenosis that requires intervention and ONLY affects circumcised males but is never reported as a complication. There are numerous other problems that are NEVER reported since they show up years after the procedure. Circumcision also affects female pleasure where women with intact men experience 300% to 400% more vaginal orgasms and report less then 1/3 soreness of women with circumcised. It is really is a horrible travesty this practice continues especially in a culture which prides itself on being the most civilized. Women against female circumcision but are for male circumcision are nothing but shallow sexist hypocrites. Men circumcised at birth are starting to have a voice but our culture also is very good at shamming these men. We are no better then uncivilized savages.
