ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL HOMESTEADERS OF AMERICA CONFERENCE #154
Enjoy highlights from the recent Homesteaders of America Conference, where people from all over came together to share their knowledge and passion for homesteading and self-sufficiency!
We had a fantastic time at the 2023 Homesteaders of America Conference. We were expecting a typical outdoor show type of feel, but it wasn't what we experienced at all. Everyone was super friendly, helpful, and looking to help each other out. We met some fantastic people, like Nick Freitas @Nickjfreitas (Virginia Delegate) and Joel Salatin from Polyface Farms. We will definitely be back next year, but be sure to get your tickets early because they sell out really fast.

OUR ENTIRE GARDEN GROWING SEASON IN UNDER THREE MINUTES #125
We just bought the Food Saver 5200. This is our second food saver product and we’re very satisfied with our first unit which lasted us about a decade. The issue with this model is the vacuum and moisture tray is elevated so high up on the unit that you use almost double the size bag you would need. The second issue is in approximately 20 attempts to vacuum and seal food items, we were successful maybe three times. Then no matter how many times I tried after that, no air would be removed from the bag which means it also could not automatically seal. The unit would have kept on running if I had walked away for an hour. In a phone call with customer service, we were told we could either 5200 or receive a full refund. In a subsequent email, all they offered was replacing the unit. But at this point the design of this model is far inferior to other models on the market and this was supposed to be one of their higher end units. I would only rate this a two out of five. I give it a two because possibly a replacement unit would have a properly working vacuum system but rating the design alone gives it a one.
@Bill_Maine - I completely feel your frustration, and I'm sorry you're going through this. After my third Foodsaver unit and after so many of the seals had failed, I felt like there had to be something better out there. Other than this chamber vacuum I don't have any other experience with one, but we are extremely satisfied with this unit and how it performs. I hope this video helped you on your journey as to weather or not you should "upgrade" to a chamber vacuum. Keep us posted on your progress.
Amazing!! Well done!👍🏆🤠🙏
Thank you! So glad you liked it!! Cheers!
Bro what’s the part number?
The model of the alternator we got was Bando and the part number is 11A1090 on partsgeek.com. Here's the URL where we got our alternator from: www.partsgeek.com/ss/?i=1&ssq... Hope this helps!
Wow, silver skin beautifully removed 👍🏻
Thank you so much 😊
I usually freeze lay flat my high liquid items before using my foodsaver.
I haven't tried doing liquids yet, but I'm definitely looking forward to trying it.
Hate to burst your bubble but the Tramontina skillets are black matte enamel coated INSIDE! Yes, it looks just like raw cast iron, but it is not. Only the edge of the pan and the inside edge of the lid are raw cast iron which requires an oil seasoning.
Thank you so much for your comment, and yes, you're right! After doing this procedure we've had no issues at all!
What a sweet little couple!
Thank you!!!
Im sold! Ronco should hire you 😅 Im going to purchase one now. Thank you!
Thank you!! When you get yours, let us know what you think!
How much of each vegetables do you use for this recipe
You mean a pilot hole?
Yep! A pilot hole! THANKS!!!
It cut out just when you said how long to water bath for.🤔
Sorry about that, they should go in the water bath for 10 minutes.
That ol man got himself a zyn holster 😂 that's funny 🤣.. great video though very informative! Thanks y'all!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hands-down chamber vac Vac Master 230 VP I have one really good product thousand dollars
I agree - the chamber vac has been awesome for us.
Hands-down chamber vac
I agree - the chamber vac has been awesome for us.
Awesome video❤
Thanks 🤗
I saw a guy who used a vacuum sealing bag and a shop vac to press the kydex into shape around the firearm. It seemed to work great and seems simpler. Great video with great information.
I've heard of that being an effective technique, but never seen it in person or used it myself. This may be something that Eli and I try in the future though. Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching our video.
Why do you need to season the edges of the ones with enamel inside?
@anatrevino3320 - The seasoning is for the portions of the cast iron that has not been enameled. Any exposed cast iron should be seasoned, in my opinion.
Great job 👍😁
Is it necessary to use filter when using minispal watet
I would recommend using the filter, but it is an option.
That’s because you should kind of freeze your meat first before you seal it and then it won’t pull anything out but air!!! This is 2024. I just purchased the FM 5400 by food saver and I’m not I don’t care. I will have a little garden in the summer 2025 but I don’t really can. I don’t do really much prepping at all so this is just to keep my weekly or every two week purchase, airtight, and fresh.👍
@linden5576 - That sounds like a great purchase!!! I hope it works out well for you and your family. I'll have to try your frozen meat suggestion, but I have to say...after my third foodsaver purchase, we were looking for something a bit more reliable. I wish you all the luck with your FM 5400!
FLATS🤤
@kathydezurn4041 - I'm with you! We've had quite a few votes for the drop dumplings, but I think these are so much better! Let us know if you make these chicken and dumplings, and how they turned out for you. Thanks so much for the constructive comment, and thanks for watching our video.
Thanks for this video. I just bought a kit for our orchard and this really helped make it clear.
@davetinoco - That is so amazing to hear! Please keep us posted on your progress and your thoughts. I have a feeling it's going to make a huge difference. Thank you so much for the constructive comment, and thanks for watching our video.
Can you stick the pan in a pre-heated oven?
@SilenceHurtsMore - That is an excellent question. I wouldn't recommend putting it into a pre-heated oven. It's better to let the cast iron come up to temperature because it could potentially crack the enamel. Thanks so much for the question, and thanks for watching our video.
What temperature was it?
@nahidbodiz7053 - we heated the oven up to 350 degrees and it worked great! Thanks for the question, and thanks for watching our video.
No seal button to make your bags!
@okay3037 - Unfortunately, there isn't a button in order to just seal the bags. There are bags that are made that are already pre-cut and sealed on one side which makes things super simple, but I've had this roll for a while and want to use them up. Thanks for the constructive comment, and thanks for watching our video.
can you replace avocado oil for coding? Nice video
@marianrozsa1746 - Yes, you can pretty much use any type of oil you want, or have on hand. We use avocado oil because that's what we keep on hand to cook with. Thanks for the question, and thanks for watching our video.
I know.....if you don't show it in the video then it never happened...LOL. Believe it or not, I washed my hands and all of the surfaces repeatedly throughout the video, every time I touched the chicken. I didn't think having everyone watch me wash my hands and everything down every time would be entertaining, and we even discussed your exact comment before we posted the video. Anyway, we hope that you liked it and thanks for watching our video. The chicken really is fantastic!!!
Thank you! Just picked up a new one at a thrift store for $10 and wanted to use it to replace the Costco chicken we buy every week. Very helpful video.
@betsylaughlin7523 - $10??? What a major find! That is so awesome, and I'm sure you're going to love the chicken. We had another viewer comment on other things to try on the chicken besides just parsley. She suggested "How bout garlic pepper, salt, Rosemary, etc?" We've tried garlic, salt, and pepper before, but the Rosemary sounds fantastic! Thanks so much for the constructive comment and thanks for watching our video.
What a cross contamination mess...
@WaterMalone42 - I know.....if you don't show it in the video then it never happened...LOL Believe it or not, I washed my hands and all of the surfaces repeatedly throughout the video, basically every time I touched the chicken. I didn't think having everyone watch me wash my hands and everything down every time would be entertaining, and we even discussed your exact comment before we posted the video. Anyway, we hope that you liked it and thanks for watching our video. The chicken really is fantastic!!!
@@livinthenewcomblife , clean your olive oil bottle.
@WaterMalone42 - Yep, I washed that too.
@@livinthenewcomblife,good. And yes the chicken looks delicious.
Mine fail occasionally even though i double seal always. Ive resealed them and they fail again. Its either the factory edge or their is a small hole in it.
@Nonyabusiness911 - I know what you mean, and it's so frustrating. Ever since we upgraded to the chamber vacuum sealer we haven't had a single problem with the seals. The next bags we purchase will likely be thicker than the ones we've used before so hopefully no holes develop. Thanks so much for your constructive comment, and thanks for watching our video.
Cheese didn't even melt! I would either cook at a highe temp or cook longer at the temp you chose.😊
Yep, you're right. We made pizza bombs several times after making the video and cooked them longer. They turned out fantastic! We also tried them by not adding the sauce during cooking, but heating up the sauce, putting it in a small bowl and dipping the pizza bombs in it, and that turned out fantastic as well. Thanks for the constructive comment, and thanks for watching our video.
I love the Timelapse! Great video.
We're so glad that you enjoyed the video. It's funny because I was using a small "Go Pro"-like camera to record the timelapse and it was strange that it made the heating element a purple-ish-blue color, but you can only get that type of footage once, so we went with it. Thanks for the constructive comment, and thanks for watching our video.
I'm pretty sure your lids did that because you tightened them too tight.
Yep, we found out later on that we over tightened the lids. We were very new at canning and didn't think we had over tightened them, but we learned a valuable lesson - fingertip tight. Thanks so much for the constructive comment, and thanks for watching our video.
Looks like a lot of fun.
The Virginia Scottish Games is a lot of fun!!! There's so much to do, and see to immerse yourself in the Scottish culture, music, folklore, and history. If you get a chance to go, the 50th Virginia Scottish Games is coming up - August 31 and September 1, 2024. We hope to see you there!!!
After you use up your stock of one side textured bags, never buy those very expensive bags again at nearly $0.50 for each bag, when chamber bags average $0.02 per bag because you have no need of the textured side for air passage.
The coronation is not for strength. It is for airflow in the traditional vacuum sealer. The chamber does not suck the air out. It removes the air to a lower pressure atmosphere then seals the bag and then allows our atmospheric to come back in, which is by magnitudes greater to collars the low atmospheric pressure in the bag to be collapsed.. that is why you see no change as the vacuum is being pulled. Only when the chamber vacuum pressure is released.
Omgosh. Parsley only?!! How bout garlic pepper, salt, Rosemary, etc? Hey, to each's own! Thanks for the vid.
@jjglasco8283 - That is a great point!! There are so many options. We've tried garlic, salt, and pepper, but Rosemary sounds fantastic! Thanks for the advice, and thanks for watching our video. 😀
Will this make the fry pan non stick for eggs? I have a Crock Pot enameled cast iron fry pan, and was thinking of returning it, until I saw these videos.
Just bought the EZ Showtime Rotisserie machine. First use: BEST. CHICKEN. EVER. Wow.
That is so awesome!!! I agree with you 100%!!! It's the best chicken ever!!!
Great job!! One of my favorites!
So...are you a fan of these types of dumplings or drop dumplings? This recipe turns out fantastic every time!!!
Nice desecrated American flag...
Wash ur hands before touching everything..just a thought my man..looks great tho
I know.....if you don't show it in the video then it never happened...LOL Believe it or not, I washed my hands and all of the surfaces repeatedly throughout the video, basically every time I touched the chicken. I didn't think having everyone watch me wash my hands and everything down every time would be entertaining, and we even discussed your exact comment before we posted the video. Anyway, we hope that you liked it and thanks for watching our video. The chicken really is fantastic!!!
Just another 10 minutes XD
LOL.....just another 10 minutes. It turned out delicious!!!
Wow seems easy
For a vehicle repair, it was easier than most and we saved a ton of money.
Buying my plane ticket right now 😂
We'd love to have you!
Looks as good as it tasted!
It was delicious, wasn't it!
Is anyone using some kind of basket to put pieces of a chicken in to cook like this? I can't find any videos about it. It is either the whole chicken here, or they cook pieces outdoors over a fire in the basket.
That is a great question! A non-stick basket did come with my rotisserie. I've used it several times for legs, wings, and chicken breasts and it works fantastic!!
I have to be honest, I’m watching and wondering why I’m not wearing my tool belt often….he’s barely moving out of frame at all, whereas I’m usually running in circles. Great video, very informative!
