I work in a big company that's trying to integrate AI into all their products. But I'm basically convinced that AI is just an elaborate sales growth scam. The engineers designing these things know they give like 80% correct answer and that's "enough" to look competent, which is enough to sell it to a company that doesn't know any better as if it's a real solution: "Look! It's 80% of the way to a functioning human!" Yeah, but that just means the real human has to do the last 20% without any context, essentially meaning they have to restart what the AI did from scratch, only this time I actually do it in a coherent structure, with references to documentation, that another human can look at and verify (because AI is incapable of accurately referencing it's data sources). There are some cases where it works really well. Ex. transforming big files from one format to another. But the part of convincing humans that it knows what it's talking about is just one big elaborate scam. It was programmed to sell itself to someone that doesn't know any better, e.g. overpaid middle-management executives that want fewer employees and for their salaries to go up. Best case scenario, we manage to convince these idiots that it's all a waste of time and use it as an improved search engine/data transformation for a lot of things. Worst case, a lot of competent people get made unemployed, and a lot of big tech company internally turn into a bunch of incompetent machines maintaining and supporting software that no one understands any more because they tried to use them to replace competent people.
