Abandoned Caldwell House Scotland
Caldwell House was the Mure family home until 1909. In 1927 Govan District Health Board converted the building into a hospital for the mentally insane and later a children's home which operated until 1985. Alterations, including the removal of the main stair to accommodate a lift shaft, led to a general decline in the state of the interior. External changes also occurred. These included fire escapes and additional boiler room and laundry buildings attached to the house. In 1987 the estate was sold off in lots by the Secretary of State. In 1995 a serious fire caused further internal deterioration and the loss of most of the roof.

It must have been loved in its day . Such a beautiful place .
I am a Caldwell of Mid Mid Calder
My ancestors were Caldwell's...amazing place!
Mine too were related
😞 the graffiti 😢
I often drive past here, most of the time there are cars parked by the entrance 🤔
This place was indeed somewhere to hide away the mentally handicapped from the rest of society. The first building with the small summer house in the grounds was for the more disabled who required 24hr care, that said, there was no proper assessments done back in the 60's and it was pot luck. To the left, behind this one as you drive in, there was another building that was added slightly later to house the Downs Syndrome children. The main house further up the estate was used for mainly adults with very varying degrees of ability. In fairness to the staff there was no proper training and they coped the best they could, most indeed were bussed in from Beith. That said children were tied to old cast iron beds, same spoon fed all the children, same razor used by all the older males, old stained cast iron baths with multiple occupants and the continual smell of urine and faeces. The glass verandah was paid for by "Parents and Friends of Caldwell House Hospital" and gave some light relief from the small windowed ex-farm buildings. When this place was eventually closed most moved to Merchiston Hospital in Johnstone(slightly better)and,as the Scandanavians have been doing since the 1970's, most are now cared for in the Community. Not a proud moment in Scottish history.
So sad kids have to destroy such beauty 😢😢😢😢
It won't be kids. Adults yes. It's in the middle of nowhere...no local transport passing it. You'd need to drive to get to it...kids don't drive.
I'm a Caldwell traced my name and yup that's my fam
Great video. This one's definitely on the list to visit.
Why isn’t this being restored?
I know right
Hang on WE OWN A CASTLE ALRIGHT THEN CALDWELL CHUMS LETS TAKE IT BACK
TheCrazyTopHatMan Yes let’s!
Are you a Caldwell cus I am too
I visited the house in early August 2016. The local taxi driver did not even know about it. I had to lead him thanks to Google maps. We had to turn into an unmarked road, and then the road surface quickly turned into a very rough, unmaintained surface. First the cab driver wanted to give up, and then I almost also gave up the chase, but we eventually were rewarded. So sad. What an august house it once was. James Caldwell
I’m glad to see what our ancestors owned we don’t even have a picture of it
