When is someone going to try a yagi antenna? The gain from a yagi puts those verticals to shame. There are some good quality yagis. However, the manufacturers add 30 feet of cable. You don't need that much. 6 to 10 feet of cable is sufficient. Use a 3 to 5 foot mast in vertical polarization position.
Thank you for doing a realistic test and not some useless review like other channels. You showed me that it’s pretty useless when used in that way
Thanks, I'm interested in the T-Deck, but I have no experience with the tech jargon.
If you are not into the tech jargon I very much recommend the T-Deck Plus since its a full package to get started with Meshtastic without the need to understand more. Thanks for watching!
I tested one of those short antennas that come with the T114 boards on my VNA. They are actually pretty close. Resonant at like 880Mhz but still a very low SWR at 906Mhz.
Loving this short antenna. Thanks for watching!
The T Deck is ok for transmitting from your pocket inside a building IF you have a decent node in client mode inside your vehicle parked outside to use as a hop.
Yep ideally I would love to have a long range setup on the roof that helps make the connection. Thanks!
I own 2 T Deck Plus one has an external antenna in the 3rd floor flat window where I live. It has managed to receive messages from the centre of the building on the ground floor, at the rear of the building so I sent every message with no line of sight but it still received every message, I am impressed!
I'm super impressed by this technology! Can't wait to test out the "LONG SLOW" it's going to get even more range. Thanks for watching!
Should make a video installing the new Fancy UI for these
Great idea! I'm excited to try it out. Coming soon. Thanks for watching
You're using in both cases the small + the bigger antenna, but just on the different radios? You should try with 2 times the larger antenna, 1 at home and one on the mobile. Have to admit that the smaller antenna is more portable, fitting in yr pocket. I have some gear underway at the moment. An outdoor antenna which will go on the roof from a 5 floor building, connected to the Heltec V3 Node as a basestation. 1 LILYGO TTGO node + external antenna for the car aaand a T Deck plus. I can't wait, exiting toys :)
Both Lillygo Tdeck Plus - first test both had 8" - second test both had 2" - third test both factory antenna. Thanks for watching!
I-Pex - U.FL or MHF4 or maybe even another size. Anyway, My T-Deck Plus is on it's way (+ Heltec LoRa32 V3 Node for my base station) and I will deffo connect an external antenna. Exiting toys, that's for sure!
@@404DisasterNotFound I ordered a pack of IPEX to replace the one I broke. Swapped the antennas one too many times. Have fun and thanks for watching!

I wonder how much further the signal would get if both nodes were outdoors. The glass of the window is definitely blocking some of the signal, as well as the vehicle itself. But range tests are always fun to watch regardless!
@@GrubOne I found a cell phone holder that I can use to mount the device outside instead of inside. I'm going to test the Long Slow setting which should get me double the range. Now I'm just waiting for my IPEX connector to come in because I broke mine from switching out the antenna so many times. Always a good time! Thanks for watching
Pure glass doesn't effect RF. The body of the car 100% screws with the RF.
@@762gunr Everything I have read about the topic says otherwise. Especially if it is UV protected glass.
@@GrubOne Pure glass dingdong
@@762gunr Windows in houses and cars don't use pure glass, at least not for the last 20+ years. And pure glass will still refract radio frequency.
Did a range test on my two Heltec V3s a few days ago, on Long Slow, carry one with a whip antenna, home one with the included stubby antenna, and I got a solid 4 miles of range between them, two way comms, before I turned around. Tons of trees, houses and forestry in the area too, it's wild how far these things can go. 4 miles translates to roughly 21K feet to put it next to these measurements, that's actually insane for a single watt, even if it does have more send/recieve latency due to the bandwidth. It was a very similar setup to what you did here, with the home unit sitting in a window and the mobile unit in a phone clamp in my truck. I think going to Long Slow may be good in a community where Meshtastic isn't built out yet, like my area where it's literally just me. And if it starts picking up in popularity, then it would be worth switching over to Long Fast, being that's the default option, while monitoring media or a spare device on LF to see if Meshtastic's spreading.
Thanks for the heads up! I'm going to have to look into the Long Slow option and try again
Left one at my work today, it's hardly any further out at 4.2 miles but there's a tall hill in the way unlike with the successful 4 mile test, the hill killed the signal unfortunately so how far you can go is still very terrain dependent, I didn't really expect it to work well over the hill but I thought it was worth a shot anyway given the previous success. Maybe a pair of large Yagis pointed to try and bounce the atmosphere over the hill could do it but handheld omnis can only do so much, even if they're a nice tall whip.
@@kmemz I can't wait to try the Long Slow mode. I broke my IPEX connector on one of my TDecks from switching out the antennas too many times so I'm waiting on my order now
I got the Muzi 915 antennas, did another range test, idly set it up with minimal expectations beyond the same 4 mile test I did before. Got the 4 mile signal, went to my workplace on an off day to mess with 3D Printing since I leave my printer there due to a lack of space at home. I decided to leave the other Heltec in a window facing home while I was printing, I ended up checking the Meshtastic app and the map said "[Home Node] 7 Min". After some additional testing I am able to get a very low quality, but consistent signal over the small mountain - I checked, it's actually a named mountain and not a hill like I said it was before, and it's able to send messages through a window, and full status updates if I step outside. The status updates seem to fail if I'm inside. That's a confirmed 4.2 miles, over a mountain no less, on a good sunny day with Long Slow. The Muzi antennas aren't perfect, I had my ham friend test them with his VNA and they resonate up around 950-960MHz, but they still have an SWR of less than 1.4 around 906MHz, roughly where the default 915 channel Meshtastic sits on is, and that is still excellent. I think I'll recommend them. My other antennas, both the stock stubbies and the cheaper whips, all resonated in the 838MHz range. Still under 1.8SWR at 906, but not quite as good as the Muzi whips.
👍🏼

@@crakkajakka15 filmed it last night thanks for watching!
Would you advise removing the internal antenna? Rather then leaving it in
I recommend leaving it in. You might one day get a new device and want to dedicate the upgraded antenna to the new device. This way you can put the old device back to factory specs and still use it one day.
Definitely curious to see the range improvements!
Yes!! Me too!
Recording them today! Can't wait to share
@patrickpuma sweet! I'm looking forward to it
It helps. Everyone using cursor loves to speed through all these keyboard shortcuts they learned earlier and not really explain things. This will allow me to create files and stuff? The chat just seems to edit them even when I tell it to create, and it’s like, yeah I’ll create. *Creates edits*
Yep this will absolutely create files for you. I do have to recommend cline in vscode over cursor at this point. Thanks for watching!
@ looks nice. Seems like it could get expensive?
@@Seanmclem cursor is more expensive depending on how much you use it. Check out my video on building a full stack web app. I use 4o mini as the model in cline and it's super cheap
I purchased one of these along with a couple of Heltec V3 kits to stick in tic tac cases, I'm looking forward to seeing how well it works when they arrive. It's a hit too late but my area got hit by Helene, so I want to be prepared for if there's ever a next time. Also, there's a newer firmware available that has a massively overhauled UX, have you looked into it? I hope it's on the stable update channel, I don't plan to run beta firmware because I want to have a known reliable system so it would be nice to have on stable.
Sounds like a great setup with the Heltec V3 kits in tic tac cases! I'm also curious about the new UI update-it looks promising, but I've heard it can be risky and might even brick the device. I'm thinking about getting a third one just to test it out safely. Wishing your area a quick recovery. Thanks for watching!
@@patrickpuma The shipping times on the Deck were also a big factor, I'm still in and out of a flooding property every couple of days for work purposes so having the Heltecs by Saturday now beats out having the T-Deck by the end of the month when me and my coworkers are no longer loading up trailers full of recovered tech to clean and reuse. I hope that I'm done with that soon, but if I'm not done then it'll be perfect for a short range trial.
Love it brother! Stoked for the range test. Also would love a video on the new UI
I'm on it! Thanks for watching!!

Thanks for watching!
question.. was the built in antenna not strong enough.. or you just went right to the upgrade? Did you see any difference in distance?
I'm planning to run some range tests for the next video but the internal antenna is for sure very limiting. Thanks for watching!
I have a T-Deck plus and I've found the range to be adequate. I also have a node in my car which it connects to as a hop point which is usually within a km or so of where I am.
@@Jakefrc Nice.. I figure once I get the 'big' node on top of the building.. then I will test the mobile ones for range.

Is there a way to auto accept in Claude dev like cursor ?
so it looks like to me its all based on what you are attempting to accomplish and how you prompt it. Sometimes you get to accept all and move on and sometimes you have to follow the instructions and throw commands at the terminal. But this is for both claude dev and cursor composer
You should sign up with openrouter and use their API key instead. That way you can still use Claude 3.5 sonnet OR you can switch out to other models, like o1 preview and mini. Those more expensive, but you can just test them out on Claude Dev if you are curious enough. Thanks for the comparison. Now I feel better knowing I should just stick with Claude Dev in VS code
And yet another problem with AI, you don't need JS for this. For many years you could do this using `perspective`, and nowadays using `animation-timeline: scroll()`. AI is full with bad practices.
Please tell me you nuked that api key bro. Great video thanks.

Would it be possible to use Claude API key in cursor, but WITHOUT paying cursor premium? I do have copilot so I can use that instead of composer I guess.
@@tomich20 I would say no. You would need the premium. I recommend the claude api key inside of claude dev extension in vs code instead.
