    Oh I like Arya's chapters well enough but her chapters on the brink of the Red Wedding hurts to re-read. I know I'm jumping a bit here because she doesn't appear until the end... but the Freys damned themselves not only when they broke guest right but the way they treated Catelyn's body. If they had handled it with respect (ie Tyrion sending Ned's bones to his wife and son) instead of throwing her naked in the river, then Beric would never have found her and there would be no Lady Stoneheart hungry for Frey blood. Gotta love narrative punishment!

    Nice to have you back. I hope you guys have been well. This chapter made me think of Stannis, and his staggering hypocrisy when it comes to Sansa's claim in Dance. It's amazing that for a character who constantly empathises that the Iron Throne is his by rights, he tries to force Jon into usurping Sansa when according to the laws Stannis is trying to reinforce, Sansa is the rightful heir to Winterfell. Bran and Rickon are believed dead, and while he is unaware that "Arya Stark" is an imposter, Arya is still younger and yet despite this - he would have gotten Jon to usurp Arya as well if he could. Not to mention - let's say Sansa was in the North right now. If Tyrion is as smart as people say he is, there is no way he would try to show up in a place where every person would want his head. However, this isn't the first time Stannis tries doing something like this. In Clash, he offers to make Renly his heir until a son is born to Stannis. Meaning if Stannis did die without a son, he would have been happy for his brother to take what should belong to Shireen. I also don't think it matters either if Stannis knew about Robb's will. That document would have been an act of treason, considering it was Robb determining who would succeed him as KITN, not Lord of Winterfell.

    - Sorry guys I gotta disagree about Edmure. The arrow thing is the last thing he'll do for his father. Can't blame him for wanting to do it. - I'm glad Robb found a little happiness with Jeyne for a while. It might have been duty but I do think they would have had a loving marriage if life was kinder. - The point about Sansa is interesting because Robb likely rationalized his earlier decision as she's not my heir (Bran and Rickon were still alive and safe) but this is just a flaw in Westeros system - Sansa IS older than Bran and Rickon. Why shouldn't she have a better claim than them? Great episode as always. Love the humor and insight

    Sansa didn't get Lady killed. 1. She told Ned what happened. He then excepted her to basically humilate her betrothed in front of the whole court while seeing that she was frightened/uncomfortable. That's on him. They tried changing this in the show by having Cersei call Sansa to speak because the showrunners probs realized this scene actually made Ned look bad. 2. Cersei said back in Tyrion I that she hated the wolves and didnt want coming South. She saw an opportunity and took it. Nymeria was gone, so might as kill the other wolf too. 3. Robert could have stopped it. He blames himself. So does Ned. As they should. Also regarding people who should be blamed, in her walk of shame Cersei sees particular people. Ned, Sansa, Lady, Melara. What do they all have in common? Cersei hurt them. There is no way Sansa could have known that Cersei would be vindicative enough to call for Ladys death. Like come on. Furthermore Sansa didn't cause Arya to do anything. Arya had chased Nymeria off before the trial. Not to mention but if someone was interested in blaming Arya for Ladys death, then you could easily point to the arguement that if Nymeria hadnt been chased off by Arya, Lady wouldnt have died. I mean Cersei says it. We don't have Nymeria (because Arya chased her off) so we'll kill this wolf instead. That said that doesnt mean Arya deserves blame either. sorry i don't mean to be rude but i do feel quite strongly about this. good episode otherwise.

    - Good episode. - Tywin insisting that Tyrion get Sansa pregnant ASAP... Like dude you do realize how easily 13yo Sansa can die in childbirth and the child with her? It reminds me of the decision he made to kill poor Rhaenys. His senseless butchery of a little girl shows his political stupidity. Rhaenys should have been betrothed to Robert's eldest firstborn son. It would have helped keep the Martells loyal. - Also his delusion that the lords are going to be just peachy about Tyrion being LOW? In reality those lords would kill Tyrion, that child would be warded off, and Sansa would be married off again to a proper powerful Northern vassal so they could be her consort. No way would they let a child of Lannister blood sit the high seat in WF. - Shae is just doing her job. She's barely older than Robb. (She's 19 or 20 when she dies if I recall right) She doesn't owe Tyrion anything. - I'm kind of indifferent about AZOR AHAI.

    Good ep. - I think Jaime's arc is about his identity and who he wants to be. Not redemption. - I mean in the context of their world, losing a hand IS a big deal. People don't have the options that they do here. I can't really fault Jaime for being so distraught over it. - Brienne is brilliant. - You are right about the "unKiss" being born of a traumatic experience. The Hound intended to rape Sansa (I'm sorry but with Cersei previously telling Sansa about what happens to women at times like this, the Hound forcing her onto the bed, him using language like "whenever you will it or no", I think it's clear the Hound wasn't after some song) Its Sansa's way of the softening the memory - but even then the Hound doesn't look good - he took the kiss.

  • @cheriealicent9981

    Good episode. - Arya thinks her mother wouldn't her back; Cat frees Jaime in hopes of getting her daughters back. - I don't think Arya is going to lose herself completely. - I hate Rhaegar. :)

  • @cheriealicent9981
    @cheriealicent9981 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I hate that Jeyne Poole theory. I want to set it on fire. She does not need to die to drive Arya's story forward. And I'm sorry but Arya already has reason to hate the Boltons that doesn't include Ramsey marrying "Arya". The Boltons betrayed Robb. Arya shouldn't be the one to kill Ramsey just because Jeyne Poole pretended to be her under duress. Jeyne Poole was the one brutalized by Ramsey, not Arya. If anything it should be Jeyne who gets revenge. Sorry I'm just protective of Jeyne and I just want to see her happy and safe.

    • @brotherhoodwithoutmanners
      @brotherhoodwithoutmanners 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would be so on board with Jeyne being the one to exact revenge on Theon. That would be so much cooler than Arya doing it. Arya avenging Winterfell is cool, but Jeyne should get the opportunity to do something amazing after all she has been through.

    • @mcanta2898
      @mcanta2898 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeyne is going to Braavos right now, right? so there could be an Arya Jeyne meeting. Now Jeyne is not a fighter, or an assassin, and I doubt she is both fit or able to master the techniques to be in the little time given to us (no time skip), nor does she currently have the connections for a strong political power like little finger. Personally, I would absolutely not mind if she becomes strong and badass, I just do not see it right now when she is currently focusing on healing from her time in captivity. At least not enough to get revenge on the Boltons before others do it, revenge for the Red Wedding or something. The Boltons are not in a good place, Jeyne does not have time to heal, learn, get connections and/or skills, potentially return to Winterfell, before someone else murks the Boltons. Could be the Manderlys, or Stannis, or whomsoever. Arya at this moment does have some skills and knowledge for it, as she knows poisons, how to change a face, and the Boltons. And any skill she gets before leaving the house of Black and White. Plus she has motive herself. I would not mind it if Jeyne asked Arya to extract her revenge for her. Like if she asked her to feed Ramsey to his dogs or whatever, knowing that she does not have the power to do it herself at the moment, and she has better things to do. It would be Jeyne fulfilling her own revenge, whilst holding more truth to character traits and timelines, and would be just as cool. Like Arya in Harrenhal she would kill with a whisper all the way from braavos. I don’t see it as less her own vengeance if it’s done that way, Arya with the skills doing the deed for Arya with the name. A passing of the torch so Jeyne can get her name back. Like don’t get me wrong, Jeyne deserves her revenge, but the Boltons did not only set her up for revenge, so she, someone who is politically, militarily, and skill-wise, a nobody getting revenge on a whole house of her own power in the small time frame given is just not very likely in my mind. Not without help. Having a third party do the actual revenge for her at her request is the best I can see in the “Jeyne Poole gets revenge on the Boltons” department. And Arya is the most poetic of the options. Plus they know each other and it would show their growth (as Jeyne used to kind of bully Arya so their relationship was nasty that way) and push for Arya returning to Winterfell as she pretty much does not think she can either return or have anything to return to, at least when she left Westeros. She may get good strong connections with the Iron Bank and become an important player that way, or just decide to walk away from the whole thing and heal from Ramsey and stand on her own two legs, which is equally badass, but I think the Boltons demise will be too soon for her to have an active, personal, part in it. But that’s my own thoughts, we all know GRRM will throw at least five curveballs I didn’t see or something.

    Good to have you back. - I know there's also an in universe reason for it as the Starks are about the same level as the Lannisters socially (like how Cersei is still called Lannister & not Baratheon) but I think it's very notable that Sansa is specifically referred to as a Stark and NOT a Lannister after her marriage. The only one who does call her that is Stannis Baratheon. - Sansa owes Tyrion nothing. She owes the Lannisters nothing. - Sansa telling Tyrion she'll never want to consummate is not only brave, but she's also asserting bodily autonomy, something that isn't really recognized in Westeros with marriage. A wife is excepted to have sex with her husband, even if she doesn't want to. Sansa gives the middle finger to that. - "The Lannister woman will never have this skin." A quote about Lady, but relevant for this chapter. Tyrion or the Lannisters will also never have the "skin" of Sansa through marriage. She will never be theirs. - I feel like one of the reasons why this chapter and a few others like it hit differently now for you is that you're both older and now one of you is a parent. You can separate yourself from Tyrion because you're now reading it from the perspective of a parent. Sansa (or Arya or Bran) could be your kid. You understand Cat's feelings in a way you probably didn't before.

    - Like I know you guys like Rhaegar but I just can't find anything redeeming about him lol. All I can see is a guy who - Took advantage of a 15 year old girl who did not want to marry her betrothed and felt like she was drowning in a future she didn't want. - I love Elia because I love Sansa and they have a lot of parallels/shared traits from what we know of Elia and I will never forgive Rhaegar for what he did to her. He publically humilated her. Rhaegar has culpability in Elia and Rhaenys deaths IMO. I think he got so caught up in his prophecy and getting his third child that he completely disregarded how his actions could affect the lives of his already living children. Elia and her children deserved better.

    Great episode. - I've always been in the Lyanna as the KOLT camp. But the idea of Ned is cool and not impossible. - I definitely think Lyanna ran off with Rhaegar, and part of it comes from the fact that Arya ran off and was missing for four days while they were in the Riverlands - the same place Lyanna was "kidnapped" in. Ned is distraught over Arya being missing for obvious reasons being that she's his daughter - but also the fact that his sister went missing in the same location as well and the next time he saw her, she was literally dying. He even tells Arya that Lyanna's wilfulness brought her to an early grave - implying that Ned knew what his sister did.

    Not related to the chapter, but I find it interesting how if you go by Dornish law, how many of the heirs to the Great Houses are girls 1. House Tully - Catelyn Stark 2. House Baratheon - Shireen. Even among Robert's bastard kids, the girl is the oldest (Mya) 3. House Greyjoy - Asha 4. House Martell - Arianne 5. House Lannister - Cersei 6. House Stark - Sansa

    - IMO Jaime thinking they can just marry Joff to Myrcella is very much the result of him not experiencing cersei has. unlike jaime, cersei is the one who went through a siege knowing if stannis won he would execute her children for being "abominations" etc. - Brienne is so great. She isn't a character that has some great prophecy. She isn't a chosen one. She's just a person who tries to do the right thing because it's the right thing. Great episode as always

    Great episode as always. - Those poor boys. RIP. - Jeyne W isn't like Lollys (who is 'simple', basically Westerosi for intellectually disabled) she's just very, very young. I think you are absolutely right that there was no way she would have excepted to marry someone of Robb's status (even before he was king, Robb was heir to the North) & therefore she just hasn't had the proper training. Generally I think Jeyne had her heart in the right place and I feel for her.

    Girls Gone Cannon is a POV by POV podcast and they did a analysis of Jon (haven't gotten to Catelyn yet) and alot of Rob's mistakes parallels Jon's in Dance. The reference of the parallel between Bobby B and Rob reminds me of the wildlings shouting and pumping their arms for Jon when he decides to go and get 'Arya' right before he dies.

    Great episode, great guest. - I really hate this idea that Tyrion was forced into the marriage. The chapter shows he isn't protesting the match - He was negotiating. Tywin was also willing to marry Sansa to Lancel as well. And then he has the audacity to resent his child bride for not wanting his comfort after the Red Wedding. - Tywin will later want Sansa pregnant with an heir (ugh) - like he does not consider how young she is, how dangerous that it is? There's a very good chance she could have died in childbirth and the baby with her. What then? - Sansa ruling the North in her name is poetic justice after people have tried taking advantage of it.

  • @haven8694

    -This series has a lot of dudes with small dick energy, they feel entitled to power that they can't get or even deserve it. Jorah, Littlefinger and Tyrion are great examples of this! (Even Tyrion does kind of deserve it, but he starts having similar patterns of LF and Jorah in this book) - I personally don't think that Dany will go 'mad.' I think she will have a lot of losses in the next 2 books, plus Tyrion will be whispering in ear because he has this vendetta against his family. I also believe that she's going to a 'fuck it' moment because even though she's trying to be a good queen it's not going to be good enough. It's going to be a Shakespearean downfall from grace.

      I like this explanation of Dany. "Mad" can be seen as many things. And her having reached her limits doesn't necessarily mean she will go mad and/or lose herself. Especially surrounded by these dipshit men.

      Even though season 8 had it's issues, it made me more interested in Dany's character. I love characters that are complex, and just being a show watcher at the time I felt not very connected to her, and in season 8 could actually feel her pain.

    - "No matter how hard she tried, she could not rid herself of Arya." - AFFC. Arya won't forget who she is. - The one time we see Arya express harm on KL she immediately takes it back when she realizes Sansa is in the city. It'll be Dany. As this episode is about Arya I don't want to derail too much so I'll leave it at that. - Hot Pie is adorable. Hope things work out for him.

    - Hell yeah I want Sansa to be her own champion! This is why I get so annoyed with the people obbessed with shipping her - Sansa's story isn't about her ending up with some (insert), it's about herself. But simultanteously this idea that she does not need a love interest/be paired off with anyone at the end of ASOIAF/GOT because that’s not the point of her arc and she has her whole life ahead of her” should not be confused with this view I've seen that because of sansa’s trauma/abuse, she won’t ever be interested in love again and its better for her to be alone. I think people get this idea because Sansa thinks how she doesn't want to marry again when Lysa is talking about SR - what Sansa wants is not to be married off again for someone else's goals. - Sansa's quote how she never thought to have a claim is similar to how Ned thinks Winterfell was meant for Brandon. Sansa is 100% going to mirror Ned in being the secondborn child (and a girl at that) that rules WF however I think the difference between them is that Sansa has been on a political arc, whereas Ned whose refusal to get involved in politics is basically one of the reasons why he ends up doomed when he does try to play the game.

      I love the idea that Sansa ends up her own champion. She is a strong independent woman who don't need no man. Sansa is quickly becoming one of the most powerful players in the game. I find it funny that all these people that are trying to manipulate and use her, are basically crafting their own downfall. Similar to how the children created the whitewalkers, the lords in the South are creating the one who will be most capable of stopping the reign.

    Great episode! - Tyrells are basically the diet coke version of the Lannisters. - In regards to Arya, I think Sansa's thoughts was very realistic. You can still love and miss your family, but just because you think they're missing or dead doesn't mean your going to canonize them. The thing with Sansa is that she was essentially the girly girl in a family of four boys and a tomboy. - In regards to Margy, she could survive the series by being married to a legitimized Edric Baratheon (This wouldn't change G' s plans for Bran being king) Lady of the Stormlands isn't bad.

      I don't know, while Mace is a bit of a buffoon, I think that the Tyrells may be pretty close to on par with the Lannisters in political strategies. They manage to have Joffrey killed without having it fall back on them, and I can definitely see them making some more power plays come Winds.

    Hey guys! Glad that you both are doing better! This is my second favorite Sansa chapter in this book filled of great Sansa chapters! -I loved the point you made about the lemon cakes! I think the reason why it seems like she regressed in character is because we are supposed to see how much the Tyrells are like the Lannisters, but as a functioning unit. -The reason there is extra emphasis on Sansa having 'women's clothes/dress' is because the Lannisters have to make Sansa look older to make it okay for Sansa to marry Tyrion. She is still 12, she tells that to Tyrion next chapter, in Westeros the typical age for high borns is around 16 to 18 years old. During wartime it's usually pushed back to make alliances, I mean look at Dany with Drogo. -I know a lot of people are pissed about season 8 and the show in general, but I'm so happy that since the show ended a lot of people are taking Sansa seriously!

    - This was a really good episode. I like Martin's take on the Freefolk, but on rereads it really shows where he failed the Dothraki. Both the Dothraki and the Wildings are presented as the Other, but I definitely feel the former gets a more sympatheic, complex portrayal. There are Freefolk characters who feel so alive and vibrant (Tormund, Mance & Ygritte) with their own goals and concerns, whereas the Dothraki in Dany's storyline - just feel well, flat. - Anyway great work as always and I'm glad the election went well for you guys, thank God.

      While I do thing you are on to something, I believe it is this way for a few reasons. First, the Dothraki were introduced very early on in Game of Thrones. Martin was still working on developing the main characters. Second, and more importantly in my opinion, the Wildling truly are more free than the Dothraki. They are allowed to express themselves in more ways than, long hair with bells. The Dothraki culture is very established as tribal and lawless, but they have their own rules they follow. This almost makes it difficult for there to be major differences in the characters. Of course this could just be chocked up to laziness on Martin's part for not fleshing them out more as actual people. But I think it helps to show the savagery of them. It will also make it easier for us to believe, when they attack "as savages" on behalf of Dany, when they reach Westeros.

    Great episode as always. - Jeyne's feelings for Robb are geniune, IMO. - I really hate Sybell. What she does to Jeyne (tricking her into drinking tea that prevents her concieving) was an awful violation of her bodily autonomy and trust. It's very similar to what Hoster did to Lysa.

    Question - if you had to dress ASOIAF characters as Halloween costumes, who would it be? Me personally Arya as Red Riding Hood (she's a subversion obviously) Sansa as Snow White or Dorothy from Wizard of Oz Rickon as Max (Where the Wild Things Are) Cersei as Sandy (Grease)

    Refreshing chapter after that messy one with Tyrion. - When Arya tells Harwin that he used to lead her pony when she was "little" all I could think was you ARE little, baby. - I feel a little sad knowing we'll part from Hot Pie soon. He's a good kid. I really like his reunion with Arya in the show, and I love how he tells Arya that she's pretty (Gendry too) - LOL I love how Gendry just unknowingly drags Robert B.

    Excellent episode as always. - I think Jaime is stuck in the past and in a lot of ways is still that sixteen/seventeen year old boy. I feel awful for the boy he was when he was faced with Aerys threatening to burn everyone and demanding Jaime to bring him Tywin's head. I don't give a fuck if Jaime swore an oath to protect Aerys in that moment. He did the right thing in killing him. - Torrhen choosing to kneel to Aegon = anti parallel to Torrhen's descendant Sansa refusing to kneel to Aegon descendant Dany in the show - "The cowards weapon" I like this little dig at Joff by George, even if it wasn't intentional. Joff uses a crossbow in the books, if I recall right. He definitely used one in the show.

      Joffrey absolutely uses one in the books as well. He practices on cats in the yard. Then during the bread doots he manages to hit one of the small folk from the keep walls.

    Great episode. - This chapter is a mess. But my ultimate feelings on Shae is that she didn't betray Tyrion because she didn't owe him anything. He is her employer, and Tyrion made the mistake of forgetting that. Furthermore, when it comes to Shae & Tywin - Tyrion really shows his privilege when it doesn't even enter his mind that Shae a lowborn girl, would not be able to say no to a lord even if they wanted to. - On Shae I get not liking her. But the way she died was horrible. And the way Cersei tells the guards to get rid of her body without caring who she is.... reminds me a lot of how sex workers are at a huge risk of violence.

      Thanks for your comments. I (Nate) definitely agree. Normally I would be happy to answer for Zach too, but I don't actually know where he stands with this. I think that Tyrion gets ahead of himself. This is and always has been a job for her. She is clearly very good at her job. He makes the mistake of thinking she is in love. Strangulation is a terrible way to die. I understand why Tyrion what he did, but as you said, Shae is a lowborn who was asked by Tywin Lannister to share his bed. You would be stupid to turn him down. Thank you for listening! You're the best!
