I'm the opposite camp. I always wire components, that way you can trace the logic and sources upstream graphically. I do use a lot of tags and Snakes to connect my components so that the wires are neatly packed.

Making a quadrature decoder using normal logic gates using just control did not work (unless you turned the control knob VERY slow). So there is a speed restriction on the GPIO inputs (e.g. on a Core 110). Now, those GPIO via DB15 connectors (Core 510 and I/O Frame) have quadrature decoding built into them.

Audio players are where I had got burned the most by the 33ms delay. Some creative designing solves my issue.
