On the one hand, this is amusing, Speight and Mitchell argued it was to highlight the racialist ignorance of the British. On the other hand, it reinforced, legitimised and allowed racist ignorant viewers to carry on spouting similar shit to anyone non White. So, its just as offensive as it is amusing. Yes, ironic casting a Jewish Actor to play a racist bastard like Alf, Speight could argue til the cows come home that he was showcasing the stupidity of racialism - but he was enforcing it all with this and its films and sequels. However, the BBC will never make anything like this ever again. The truth is, it highlights what was wrong and still is wrong with the UK, and we still have ignorant twats like Alf , one only has to read the comments to realise that.
