If you go deep into the Bowl of Fire (Southwest) to within a stone's throw of the base of the Muddy Mountains and then turn south, you will find at least two ways (one involves rock scrambling over a ridge; another involves following a dry wash and swinging around the southern tip of the Bowl of Fire) to turn this hike into a giant loop.
Those are both great routes! I also like heading to the North section and hiking along the Southern base, then coming back down Calville to make a loop. Such a beautiful place. Thanks for watching!
I discovered that area by noticing the red cliffs from the road. You're not kidding about the amount of trails back there, they go all over the place and once you make it around the smaller mountain the full view of those cliffs is stunning and makes a great photo.

Agreed! It’s such a beautiful area. Thanks for watching 🙏
Very helpful thank you
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
Hey bud, thanks for the video. What time of year did you do this hike? We’re heading there to do this hike next week. Thanks
I did this video in the Fall - October through November. Next week looks amazing for weather - will be a little warm in the direct sun but if you do it early in the day, it should be perfect.
My man, I am blown away with your use of graphics, how the heck do you do that? Give a girl some pointers? Love the video, it's one of the best I've ever seen!
Hey Jillian! Thank you so much for the comments. Most of this is done with Illustrator, After Effects & Mocha. Maps were created in Illustrator, Animated in After Effects, then planar tracked using Mocha. Final version and audio was edited in Premiere. I shot the signs with a GoPro at 120 fps to make them ultra smooth and easier to track. Shoot me a message on IG if you have any specific questions. Maybe I should make a video of the process?
That was awesome! Thank you for making this video. It was very helpful and well done. 🌅
Glad it was helpful! You are so welcome. Thanks for watching.
One of my favorite trails with the dogs cuz it's never crowded.
Same! My dog Poe loves this one too.
@@BaseCampNevada Pools of water in the creek this morning. So refreshing to see and only 76 degrees.
It is nice to finally have a proper monsoon season! I’m looking forward to the wildflowers next spring.
Very nice petroglyphs. Thank you for the video.
Thank you for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Really enjoyed your White Rock Loop trail video - but audio on soundtrack with narration was off. This is much better. I really love the way you used google earth to explain where the trail is located and the video/photography and great explanations of the area. I'm hoping you can make more content! New Subscriber and followed you on instagram.
Thanks for watching and the subs! More content is always in the works. 🙏
Really enjoyed this. Very informative. The only bad thing is the sound track volume doesn't match your voice. Had to keep turning up and down the volume. The music really suited the hike well. Blame the post production editor !!
Thanks! It was my first go at doing something like this. He’s officially been sacked! 😉lol
Loved this one, J. We’ll narrated and edited. I want to go here next time I come out your way.
Thank you, my friend! We’ll definitely plan a trip out there.
I'm glad to see you producing videos again. I came across your channel last year and was inspired to check out the Oak Springs Trilobite area, and Wee Thump due to your recommendations. Thanks, they were both fantastic, but I didn't find any trilobite fossils... I'm going to give it another try next time I'm in the area. I'll be looking forward to seeing more of your content. - Mike
Thank you so much for the kind words! I’m glad Oak Springs and Wee Thump made your list. Shoot me a DM next time you’re in the area and I’ll meet you for some trilobite hunting. They won’t escape both of us!
@@BaseCampNevada Your welcome! I really appreciated the quality of your production(s). I'm surprised you don't have more subscribers. I'll definitely take you up on your offer, too! It was the first time I've been fossil hunting since I was a kid and I can hardly wait to do some more.
I'm not surprised - I need to make more videos LOL! Instagram is the best way to reach me if you want to meet up sometime.
Wow, it's been over a year since you've made a video, and I'm glad you finally did again! You did a really good job explaining this area to people! There is a lot to know before you come out and trek here! Nice work, brother, and welcome back.
Haha thanks man! Life has a nasty habit of getting in the way sometimes. Hopefully I’ll make more than one a year moving forward 🤣
@@BaseCampNevada Awesome...
This is just outstanding scenery, love it. Nicely explained everything too.
Thank you for watching! 🙏
I loved the video, and I can't wait to explore this area! Thanks for the helpful information and the beautiful visuals.
Thank you for watching! You're really going to enjoy it out there.
Mr. BaseCamp! 😉 I just love your videos and this one is one of your best!! 🙌🏽 Videography, Content, Music, Editing, LNT reminders...Big 👍🏽!
Thanks brother! Believe it or not, you inspired me to slow down a bit and give some of these spaces time to breathe.
@@BaseCampNevada 😉Your pace is perfect and I wouldn't want to ever stop you. Wish I could send my upcoming PCT Journey footage to you, on the daily! You would do it wonders! Keep on keeping on, 💯%!!
Great informative video!!
Thank you!
So cool! Thanks for sharing. I'll be heading out there next month!
Thank you! I hope you have good luck out there.
Well made video
Thank you 🙏
Thank you 🙏great video, this was so helpful. 🌈☮️
Thank you! 🙏
We used to go camping & climbing down there back in 1987/88 when I was a young Marine going through COMMO School at 29 Palms. Nice to see it again as a National Park.
It’s such a great area! Joshua trees are some of the best reasons to explore the Mojave.
We will need to hit this spot. Thank you.
Thanks for watching! I hope you find something great 👍🏻
Wait there’s petroglyphs? I walk to the cowboy trail thing and climb some mountains and look at some goats. Really windy tho
Hundreds of petroglyphs! You should definitely swing over and check them out next time you’re hiking there.
A mistake a lot of people make is to spend so much time , money & energy visiting far away places they miss so many beautiful places close to home. You are definitely not making that common mistake.
It’s all a matter of perspective, isn’t it? If you can’t find beauty just outside your front door you’ll have difficulty finding it anywhere.
As always I love your videos. Pinon Pine-Juniper communities are so fun. They are nice places to sleep under the stars. They are wonderful places to hike by foot or bike or to go running. They also make for nice drives.
Thank you! I love the forests we have here - especially when a bristlecone gets mixed in!
You have given me some good safety tips for outdoor recreation in the Mojave. Every biosphere has different safety challenges. Even different deserts have different safety challenges. I am pretty comfortable trail running in the Great Basin desert. I don't think I will try that in the Mojave. I will settle for foot hiking. I think I can mt.bike in the Mojave. I will have to stay on gravel or asphalt roads.
As a native of the western USA I think we have the world's most awesome deserts.
I couldn’t agree more!
Man, I wish I had watched this before I went. I went up the cowboy trail and when came down the other end I was stuck in the waterfall rock. Luckily two guys came toward me from the bottom and I used there hands as steps so I could slide down. It was so intense. I was about to try slide off on my own. After I warned everyone on the way down about THAT cliff lol.
Oh wow! Coming down that way can be a little sketchy! I’m glad someone was there to assist you. Stay safe ✌️
I’ve been here several times. It’s fun with a nice view of the mountain
Absolutely! It’s a great way to spend an afternoon in our scenic state. Thanks for watching!
I’m going up to Lunar Crater in a couple of weeks, me and my gf are really looking forward to it! Nevada rocks! Lol
Nevada does “rock”! LOL Such a great landmark to visit. Nice and secluded too!
Thanks for your videos! Subscribed
Appreciate that very much! Thank you 🙏
Your videos are some of the best on TH-cam thanks for sharing with us
So nice of you to say - thank you very much!
This was so great and made me comfortable to be able to do it and know how to choose the trail that matches my skill level. Thank you great editing and information.
Thank you so much 😊🙏I’m glad you found it helpful!
Really enjoyed your videos! Well produced, very informative, I look forward to seeing what you do next! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for the kind words!
*One of my all time favorite places to hike and explore! Love that it’s nearly in my backyard...* 😍
We’re fortunate to have such an amazing place nearby! Thanks for watching 😊
Really great video! Well done!! And in all my years of hiking I never thought to put my chin strap over the front brim... new subscriber here. Thanks for this awesome channel sir!
Thank you so much for the kind words! (I still tuck that strap under the chin when it’s super windy 😉)
@@BaseCampNevada Haha! Of course! Looking forward to the next one!
Nice work. Where exactly are the dates marked? And why didnt you sh9w us the petroglyphs?
Thank you for watching and the feedback. Sorry for the confusion! This is not a guide about petroglyphs, but a guide about the trails to help you get there. Maybe someday I’ll make a Part 2!
Great hike. Take the petroglyphs hike to the site. Then continue until reaching the cowboy trail (1/4 mile take a right) which will lead back to the easiest section of the original trail. Bumpy cowboy trail but good views and safer than reversing down the steep rocks that led to the awesome sight. Have fun!
Thank you for the comment! The route you described is certainly one way to approach this trail. As mentioned in the video, this is not the best option for everyone and should only be taken by those comfortable with scrambling.
Great video. My wife and I hiked the trail this morning after watching this video. Everything you show and explain is on the money. Thank you for sharing.
That’s some of the best feedback I’ve gotten! Thank you so much for the kind words.🙏🏻🥰 My goal when making it was to make sure others could enjoy and find this incredible spot. I’m glad it worked!
Enjoyed your video very much and hope to take the grandkids there soon. Thanks
Thank you so much! I hope you have an amazing time and are able to find some treasure while you’re there.
Nicely done!
Thank you 😊
Great video! Hammer terminology is very confusing. For this work I use what Home Depot calls a brick hammer. Splits easier than a pick with a pointy end. A spray bottle is -extremely- useful. A spray or two of water instantly highlights what might be hidden in the shale. As you say, a full bug is never guaranteed but trilobite hunting is always fun, even with partials. Thanks again.
Yes, the terminology can be a bit confusing - thank you for the additional tips as well! I've yet to find a full bug but really enjoy the experience. It's easy to spend a day splitting rocks in such a gorgeous setting. I find it very relaxing! Thanks so much for watching!
Very cool! Hope I get a chance to experience this place one day!
Thanks! It’s worth a trip if you ever get the chance - highly recommended 👍🏻
It sounds like you've done this a time or 2 before lol. Yeah that's pretty neat and in an area I did know was a fossil gold mine! Seems like you could honestly spend hours doing that! Thanks for making a new video and sharing this useful information with the rest of us!
Well, now everyone knows how I spent the summer of 2020 - pecking away at rocks in the desert LOL! Thanks for watching and for being a personal source of inspiration🙏🏻
Is that rock formation the Latham Shale or its equivalent? Looks like it. In the 1960's, I collected trilobites from that formation in the Marble and Providence Mtns, CA portion of the Mojave Desert. A geology professor took my best specimen.
Hi Jan! Thank you for your question. I'm not entirely sure, but I found this on one of my favorite resources for the outdoors in Southern Nevada. According to the PDF here, it lies just below a layer of Chisholm Shale and Lyndon Limestone. "Trilobites here occur in the Combined Metals Member of the Pioche Formation, in tan and green shales dating from about 500-524 mya. Few specimens are intact, but it is easy to find legs and head shields from six species in the family Olenellidae." From www.birdandhike.com/Rocks/Fossils/Sites/OakSprings/_OakSprings.htm Hope this helps!
@@BaseCampNevada Thanks, I'll check those out. The appearance of that shale is very much like the Latham. Or it could have had a similar environment as the Latham. I'm a retired geologist who at times was a paleontologist.
Most excellent! I'm just a hobbyist at best, trying to keep things as basic as possible to help people get started. I intended to make a hiking video nearby, but found this spot so interesting I had to share it.
Another amazing video! This was really fun to watch. I own several Gem Trail books and I need to get out and hunt for rocks.
Thanks so much - let me know when you do! After going here, I've done my share of reading and have become a bit of an amateur rockhound myself LOL
@@BaseCampNevada I absolutely will! Check out the Gem trails books they are great. Amazon has them marked up way to high but look on Ebay
I’ve read others, but not from Gem. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for them!
I didnt know there were any other Joshua Trees outside of Joshua Tree National Park. Learned something new today. Great video and new subscriber here.
Thank you so much for watching! Yes, we have some incredible Joshua Tress in So. Nevada too. I hope you get a chance to visit Wee Thump sometime!
You better believe it. I-15 is one of my favorite highways. From Victorville California to Idaho Falls Idaho, I know it like the back of my hand. Travel I-15 from Victorville California to St. George Utah & you will see an endless # of Joshua Trees. I have gone camping in the Mojave National Preserve & climbed Mt. Teutonia. The Wee Thump Trail is now on my travel wish list. I have some other places in the Mojave for my travel wish list. My wish list also include Nevada's Valley of Fire State Park, The BLM Joshua Tree Forest in the SW corner of Utah, The Paiute National Wilderness area in NW Arizona, & the Joshua Tree National Park. I should also probably include reservoir's in the Mojave.
They are such a defining feature of the Mojave. I can see why early settlers were so captivated and encouraged by their silhouettes on the horizon.
Already following you on instagram good to see you here too. Thanks for sharing this one. It's on my bucket list for the near future.
Thanks for watching and following! I hope you find the guide handy once you make it out there.
Great hike, very informative. Joshua Tree park is great. You do a good job on your videos. Thanks for sharing and have a great week 😀👍
Thanks so much for the comments and for watching! Have a great week too! 😊👍🏻

Great guide 👍
Thank you! 😊
It's pretty amazing I've never heard of this place! You definitely did an excellent job guiding us along this trail and showing us the ropes. Great job with the editing also. I would love for you to show us more places that I've never heard of like this in your videos. Thanks for sharing your adventure brother.
I can’t believe you haven’t heard of it either! Seems you’ve been just about everywhere in Nevada (and beyond). Thanks as always for your support and kind words (and for showing us all so many great places). I’ll do my best to dig up some more hidden gems!
