Britain's railway network reached its maximum mileage in the early part of the 20th century. Since then there has been a study decline, as the convenience of door to door road transport has proved two competitive for both passenger and freight traffic. Despite being safer and having lower fuel charges per mile travelled, railways have suffered heavily particularly since 1960s and the situation ...

Hi Thanks for a really good film ,very intersting look at the past .Regards Chris 👍😊
Fantastic video of fabulous engines, brings back memories of riding on the southern up to London Victoria and /or London Bridge.
I was amazed at how slick the wagon turntable operation was!
Remind me of when I was a child waiting for one of the six trains that came past each day on the Westerham branch line. Now of course under the M25 with tens of thousands of cars every day.
The O6/8F 2-8-0's were loved by the crews that manned them. They could get these locos to do anything. Despite their high versatility, mainly coal hauling and freight were their duties.
didi you know, that they re-used stock sfx in nthese dvd'smso most of the clips have the same sound when in reality the original sound has an unconfirmed existance. the ones narrated by peter fairhead also just use re-used stock sounds instead of the original sounds, so there is a lot of repetition, as someone who has that dvd collection.
Fireman "Runner Bean".... Inspiration for rowan atkinson
Wonderful old film.
Lovely narrative. All video’rs should take note. Easily heard, well enunciated, and beautifully timed. Many thanks. Rmb5*
Clevedon - we moved there in 1966 when I was three - I remember seeing them demolishing the station while sitting in dad's car parked in Station Road - wonderful footage - would love to see more of Clevedon station and trains if possible.
Thanks. Takes me back, Happy d.ays
Anyone know the music at the beginning
Thank you so much for this trip down memory lane... 70 this year and I remember seeing many locos passing through Wanborough near Guildford... 🧡🚂🧡
Thank you so much for uplaoding this. I had a DVD Of this eveer since I was 4 years old. So much nostalgia.
I remember seeing the little pannier tanks at Gloucester docks when I was a kid, back in the late 1950s. It was around the time when, as an 8 year old, I had just taken up trainspotting with my friends Derek and Geoff Preece, whose dad worked at Fielding and Platt which one of the engines can be seen passing. Makes me feel really old (which, of course, I am!). Also, I went to the Swindon works in 1959, and travelled home to Gloucester behind 5003 Elmley Castle which was, itself, just out of the works.

Yeah
Look👍at the size of the drive wheels 😮
Was Lord Beeching's annihilation of our railway system a gross error?
What about scrap cutting and recycling of redundant steam locos? That was an important part of railway operations, keeping the fleet up to date.
Enjoyment of this fine video was ruined by the constant interrupting irritant of adverts every couple of minutes...
Isn't that Nicholas Courtney doing the narration? (Brigadier Lethbridge Stuart)

It seems amazing that we could walk from Carlisle station and wander round the shed, taking all the numbers. Soot everywhere really, great shed for the different types of locos, Coro's, A4s, and 3's, 2's and 1's, some older 0-6-0 tender engines, every type of loco. I remember walking back to Citadel station with "Help me Rhonda", latest Beach Boys hit going round and round in my brain. Happy days.
Marvellous
Government screwing things up, just as today.
Great video thanks for showing this brings back great memories getting chased out of engine sheds train spotting absolutely loved steam trains
Wow!
still rolling steam that is english
I started to watch this but the music stopped me it’s awful. 20:56
Excellent. The p/w looks so tidy everywhere. Love this video. I would rather travel on this sort of railway and at a nice speed, than the 125mph of today, looking out on overgrown cuttings and embankments .

Bless them, the old engines seem almost human, but are so majestic and proud, makes for fascinating viewing. Thank you so much for sharing the videos 👍
LOADING GAUGE - COUPLINGS - GANGWAY TYPES. Coaching stock working through from one company to another, presented certain technical difficulties. First of course was the different "Loading Gauge" sizes of the various railways and lines. For example a lot of GWR coaches including Centenary and Super Saloons, were limited by their width to only a few routes on the GWR network. The Southern had a number of different restrictions. The Tonbridge to Hastings line for example required coaching stock of "Restriction 0" (Max 8ft.025 inches wide) because of narrow tunnels. North Kent lines had a number of narrow pinch points requiring "Restriction 1" (Max 8ft 6inches wide). Waterloo station presented certain problems for 12 wheeled Pullman cars, requiring certain "Restriction 2" Pullmans to be marshalled within a train formation anywhere but the end vehicle. Due to their buffer size, being insufficient for certain curved platforms. For unrestricted routes on the SR "Restriction 4" stock (9ft 3in wide,) and the same as the later BR "C1" Restriction of Mk1 coaches were permitted. Couplings & Corridor Gangways, presented an even bigger issue. The GWR & LMS refused to adopt the HMRI recommendations to adopt Buckeye & Pullman Gangways. So those railways continued with the "Screw Link" coupling, and British Standard Suspension (BSS) gangway connection. Which prevented them being coupled to SR; LNER; Pullman & later BR stock, all of which was fitted with Buckeye couplings, the necessary Retractable buffers, and the semi-rigid Pullman corridor connection, which includes the "Pullman Rubbing Bar" in the floor section, which provides the buffing forces on such stock (the normal buffers HAD to be in the "retracted position" to avoid derailments in sharper curves. Hence "Inter-regional" trains were generally formed of complete rakes from one company, to avoid any problem of inter-mixing. But a regular SR-GWR service to South Wales required division/amalgamation of separate portions in South Wales. The SR therefore had a small number of Maunsell coaches (normally BSK's) with one coupling & corridor connection at one end & the other coupling & gangway type at the other. Virtually all coaching stock models today, have the correct representation of either the BSS gangway. Which is narrower, sticks out further and has a rounded roof section, than the Wider, shorter oblong shaped Pullman connection. Even on the models it is apparent that these two types do NOT match, so could NOT be coupled. Unless special "Adaptor plates" were fitted to the outer ends of the BSS type. Which was normally only done, if a vehicle, such as a Restaurant car, was to be allocated to a regular rake of coaches on a semi-permanent basis. Happy Modelling 😀
Fantastic video, thanks for posting 👍
19:07 Public footplate ride on a steam special, during complex loco movements. Very rare to see!
Amazing how clean and tidy everywhere looked. All windows and roofs intact, no graffiti, and linesides well cropped. Within 20 years everything became derelict.
Neat view and comment about the buses, the locos, but nothing about the wagons . . . . why the black-painted wooden ones with the big cross on their sides, doing what?
They kept Britain moving.
This is awesome, thank you for sharing your video with us all Sir.
Superb record of one of the best UK locations for a wide variety of Steam and Diesel locos. I would have loved to have visited Carlisle during this periond.
GW locos had brass covered safety valves, not brass. That was uswed for the chimney caps.
What terrible wastage is displayed as locos are run around sheds for the titilation of a few geeky photographers. No wonder the railways were losing vast sums every year. Enter Beeching to put an end to this madness, close these branch, and get these aging locos cut up for scrap.
Wonderful. The look of the old colour film is just as nostalgic as the trains.
A Fantastic Video. Thanks for sharing .
Ah such nostalgia, the old slow and filthy!
Super video brings back such lovely memories train spotting when I was only 6 years old
