Changing front differential fluid on a BMW E70 X5 D

There is a service cover in the metal skid plate for this job but I prefer to take the plate off.

      The transfer case is the same; there's a fill and drain plug. The rear differential only has a fill plug so you'll have to get a fluid extractor or hand pump with a curved hose to stick down in there to pump the old fluid out. I used redline MT-LV for the transfer case but you'll fill it until it runs out of the fill hole. I haven't changed the rear diff yet because the fluid looks perfect but it'll also get redline eventually.

    Thanks for the tips.. I purchased this 2012 X5 w 140 k in mid August from West Palm Beach Fla. I stopped on way back to Ohio in Atlanta. A family member wrenches for a BMW dealer.. We spent a ton if time going completely over the car. He said it was the best he has seen for age n miles. About 2 weeks after getting it home. I was replacing the rain gutters. While I was in to it.. I changed the cabin filter and washed the engine bay with a mild degreaser and a hose... Very carefuly and Nothing like what I do to my 7.3 Ford crew cab dually and a 4200 psi power washer. I was putting the last screw in the trays in when it started. I dropped the last screw. Then the magnet got stuck. So i had to javk car up to remove a few screws on an under belly plate and the now broken flashlight magnet and the screw fell out. I button everything up Let the car down and It cranked for only 2 seconds and it was a NO Start. It had started all along the process. After a ton of test I purched a $158.00 Sensor. By The Way I used the 2 to 3 ft of extensions and broke the drivers side loose from underneath. ( I probably have 3 to 4 ft of extensions in all 3 sizes. When I loosed the bolt on the drivers side. The sound that bolt made when I applied a ton of force scared me so bad that I snapped it off. Everything just shot to ground. So much... I didn't touch that bolt until I got the other bolt loose. The other bolt was what I call diesel loose. It was too loose. The starter was never out of it... After I changed underwear ... I checked The drivers side bolt had broke loose. Thank God - truely. By the way a swivel ratchet 1/4 Drive with a 10mm socket works great on those two bolts. Especially the second time. Yes the second time.. I did loosen the mid ship bolt with a long 10 mm wrench for leverage. I final tighten both bolts with that wrench. I purchased an Authentic BMW part in a bag from ECS. Installed it after about week of waiting. They are 2 hours away. Installed the brand new in the wrapper and NO CHANGE. ! After hours of trying and testing. I did every test... Started replacing relays..Finally I ordered a new sensor. I should have bought a second sensor right away. My $125 scanner was still reading the same codes P0335 & P0336. Installed sensor #2 ... Immediately the engine cranked until I stopped it from turning over. After 5 trys ( it was actually trying to start each try.) The X5 lives. Like b4 it runs great. Thanks for the video.. And yes remove cross support bar... I had over 20 pieces off the car getting it to run. And yes if the crankshaft sensor went out at that particular time in my driveway. I am truly grateful. It could have been much worse. I cannot imagine how... a tow. a.... Thanks Again.

    I will probably attempt this one soon lol. I read that you’d lose a bit of torque on low end… no? And mpg gets worse a little bit… any observations? I’m surprised they have swirl flaps on each cylinder. I’ve had many e39s and I think those had a single swirl flap for all the 6 cyl… I could be wrong tho. The individual flaps is like the individual butterflies on M engines… very cool and provides higher torque on low end.

    • @sullygtx9350
      @sullygtx9350 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a good thing to do, especially if you're higher mileage. Each swirl flap seal was leaking oil and it was starting to build up on the starter and hoses. If there is low end power loss, it's so minimal that you'd only notice if you did back to back dyno pulls to show it. It's also a good idea to replace the valve cover gasket if you're over 100k miles. When they get old, boost will get past the seals and pressurize the crankcase causing oil to spit out of the turbo oil drain pipes or even push past the oil seals in the turbo cartridge. It happened to me recently but I'm also tuned and running 40 psi of boost.

    Hey man I enjoyed watching your video! You kind of remind me of myself lol. Did you notice any difference in shift after the oil change? I recently acquired X5 like yours and when it’s cold my trans shifts around 2k-2500 rpm but when warm it shift earlier. From what I read, seems like an oil change kit is needed along with adaptations reset. Did your kit contain the mechatronic sleeves or whatever they call them? It’s like 3 black small tubes. Let me know please. Also are you going to put a down pipe or something? Do you have smog/emissions test for car registration where you live? It’s mandatory here in Austin and I don’t know what I can do and cannot do to be able to pass the emission test. I watched your other video for the swirl flaps delete and I think that should be fine but all other people remove the dpf and some do EGR delete and some do both but I’m not sure if EGR delete will make me fail emissions… this diesel is so annoying, I’m like borderline regretting not going with a 35i instead.

    • @sullygtx9350
      @sullygtx9350 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The shifts did improve a little bit from just doing a new pan and oil. They got even better with a Sutphin trans tune which I recommend and that will get rid of the higher rpm cold shifts. When you do just fluid or the mechatronic seals, you shouldn't reset the adaptations. That's only necessary if you are replacing internals in the trans or the whole valve body. Just yesterday I got the tube seals and the bridge seal to drop the valve body and do the whole refresh job; I'm at 135k miles so it's definitely time to do the full job. I'm also in Austin, and luckily Texas doesn't do emissions testing for diesels, only a safety inspection. I've been running the ATM downpipe and SCR delete for a year now and it's been great.

      I would get the 10" if I did it again. The squeaking because of the flimsy plastic mount drives me crazy.

    Nice work, Bimmergeeks are a Godsend for sure! Is that an aftermarket display you have?

      Yeah it's a 12" plug and play android screen. I have a video about it if you're interested.

    Hey man, couple months later hows your experience so far?

    • @sullygtx9350

      Screen creaks, I'm looking for some mini turnbuckles to put behind the screen to tension everything up. Spotify sometimes doesn't play but I don't think that's due to the screen. It's not very bright and gets a little washed out during the day but no glitches or malfunctions as of lately. I rarely use the split screen feature since Waze gets cut off when I do now. If I were to do it again, I'd go with the 10" screen instead of the 12".

    Well theres your answer... every bump you hit was shocking the unit

    • @sullygtx9350
      @sullygtx9350 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's very unlikely that bumps on the road being absorbed by my car's suspension caused the unit to fail. If that was the case, the better mounted 10" screens would have a much larger rate of failure than the screens with flexing mounts.
