Things don’t start out beautiful. Art starts out as failure. You can stop at this point. Most do. They assume they lack some natural talent.
But you can keep going. You can iterate. Experiment. Remix. As you work, you build up layers of failures. Wrong on top of bad on top of yuck. Naturally you’ll question yourself.
But if you don’t give up…
Eventually, inevitably… something will emerge that speaks to you. It’s not good yet, but there’s something there. So you keep working on it. Rework it. Rerun the experiments until things start working. You will arrive at something you like. And there’s a chance other people might like it too.
Of course to outsiders, the finished object looks like it was one master stroke. All the mistakes, wrong turns and failures? They are invisible to everyone but you.
Nobody needs to see your failures. It’s embarrassing. You can perpetuate the illusion that you are a gifted artist who farts gold.
But it doesn’t hurt to share the ugly side of the creative process. Because maybe there is somebody doubting themselves right now. Someone who needs to hear that art is hard. Maybe if this person saw the 120 abandoned scraps that led up to the final work they would summon the will to persevere through their own challenges. Stay creative.

Unboxing Reaction Video - Will He Like My Art?
มุมมอง 3714 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
It's an honor to have @knoptop doing an unboxing of my Inner Demon Kickstarter project on his livestream yesterday. I missed the live broadcast so I thought I would do a reaction video as I watched the replay. When you ship art to people, you don't get to see their reactions so this was so fun to almost be in the room as Knoptop opened my box of art. If you don't follow Knoptop, you should. He ...
How Does Las Vegas Feel to Someone with Hypersensitivity?
มุมมอง 22516 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Is being a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) a curse or a blessing? In this video I am going to try to describe what Las Vegas feels like to someone with hypersensitivity. Some of us have lower sensory thresholds than normal. Combine HSP with the most stimulating city in the world and it can be an invitation to stimulus overload. But I've figured out what works for me, and I'll tell you how you can...
Is Creativity Dead? Responding to The New York Times
มุมมอง 78614 วันที่ผ่านมา
Is creativity dead? It’s a fair question, and it is the subject of a new video by @KirbyFerguson for The New York Times. As a fan of Everything is a Remix, it was a big honor to see an image from my book make a cameo in the video. So I made this response to the question, and added my own thoughts as someone who is trying to create original work in the age of the algorithm. Yes, it feels like al...

I admire the perseverance and showing the practice it took to get a simple idea to match your vision.
Ok you got me interested... now show us how you did it (with an explanation of the "mistakes")
@@davidcahan Yes I have that in the works. 🙂 It’s like an hour long so we’ll see if anyone wants to watch. 🤷♂️
@adehanft maybe not an hour. Seems to me that 20 - 30 minutes is the sweet spot. Either way I quite liked the success. A series of different fruits may be in order? Kiwis would probably be pretty cool
Smokers lungs Age - 42
Elstar?
ups labels, I have rolls of them
Me too. I've tried a bunch of different kinds, but the ones that work the best for me are the flat sheets from UPS.
@adehanft they work really well, great to have around, have been using them for years for any random task.
Either do that or smoke for 50 years and get an x-ray
Thank u so much! In the end it's more about the process and not the final art
What's the solution you poured on the apple?
Isopropyl alcohol in this case. Acetone does cool things, too. 🤫
Thank you. What a beautiful video.
@@jeremyude I appreciate that, Jeremy. Thanks.
Oh that’s super cool. Great idea.
@@thomaslawson7469 thanks, Thomas!
Hey Ade, have you ever seen Frank Zappa's movie "200 Motels"? It was the first feature-length movie shot directly to video. It was made in 1971 and has tons of amazing video affects, all of which were made with analogue equiptment.
I have not! Zappa is such a fascinating dude. I'll check it out, thanks for the tip!
@@adehanft He sure was. Some of the effects in 200 Motels are stunning, especially when you think about when it was made and the equiptment used.
Amazing!! Amazing video. The eery music being on the brink of overstimulation is just perfect. It’s like the spaced out feeling you get when you’re in overstimulation mode. Like everything is moving at a different speed and you’re just going through the motions. Your mind is at 1000% but your vision is in slow motion catching every detail.
I relate to "not having a plan" very much. I'm super ADHD and that's how I function most of the time when making art.
So much of this sounds familiar to me. I don't think my version of this is as difficult as yours, but almost all of the things you mentioned are things i've experienced. It was much more difficult in my teens and twenties, but just like you mentioned, over the decades i've built up tolerances and coping mechanisms. I've never been to LV (i'm from NJ), but i remember one time a friend came in from out of town i took her to Manhattan. I was so rude to her that day because i had a tough time dealing with Manhattan, and i've felt bad about it ever since. Anyway, i'm enjoying this series of yours so far. Looking forward to more, Mr Ade.
I have a hard time in Vegas myself. And I think you've articulated exactly how I've felt being there.
You're escape in the pool is the magic of water. A quiet retreat inward for rejuvenation. You never leave the pool with the same feelings going in. My most recent exploration might allow approximation of what it might be like to be HSP through cold water immersion; some cold is tolerable, too cold can have a burning sensation before shifting to tolerance - for a bit. Push it too far however and it is irrecoverable. Why cold water immersion? The micro stress of the cold blocks out all external stimuli as you are forced to focus on the sensation of the moment. This is a controlled stress. The intention is that repetitive exposure enables adaptation. Can you tolerate it for 30 seconds? Just 30 seconds? Good. How about taking it to the next level and try for 1 minute, etc. When similar triggers occur in daily life, can you employ coping mechanisms to move past them as well? Not desensitized but in more control. You're managing your actions rather than reacting to them. Just some thoughts.
@@LarryMcKeogh thanks! I’m beginning to understand your intense water rituals!
Looking forward to this series of videos, Mr Ade. I have never been to LV, and i'm not really interested in the typical LV things to do, so i'm curious to see your take on it. :)
Great social document of the times and loved what you did with the soundtrack and narration replacement. Thank you for making and sharing!
Great research. I'm a huge "qatsi" series fan, and phillip glass advocate musically. I love the remix. Copland is a pure genius as well. My feeling with art (not to be hippity dippity, I'm a graffiti from the streets, I hate even saying that to give my opinion some context) it always makes cycles. These films that were made with majesty, style, are great reminders of the grotesque, that hopefully bring a sense of humility. You did well homie.
Hopefully I'm still making my Battlefield Chessboards when that time comes.
Dude, your chessboards are amazing. Nice work.
@ Thanks!
No it's not dead it's constantly suppressed by politically overcorrect office heads who can't imagine last their cubicles
This feels like something I needed to see today... Since when does youtube show me things I need to see?? =P
The algorithm got one right? Even a blind squirrel finds a nut some times I guess.
I sure as heck hope so. I’ve been working on a marionette movie for a good while now and finding anyone with money interested in paying to get it made has been tough. It’s not like anything that currently exists so it so I can’t point to anything and say, “it worked before!”
Wow, your marionettes are great. Don't give up, man. It needs to exist, with or without backers. The pendulum will swing back to us creators.
@ Thank you! And thanks for the kind words. I’m doing my best to overcome the challenge by being over prepared. If I can just show an estimate of what the final outcome will be like, maybe I can get past the skepticism.
Regarding the similarity of those cars, in engineering such conformity and the psychological inertia that creates it is no accident nor outcome of a stultified design discipline. It's a direct result of powerful risk management mechanisms within each firm, and is ultimately a deliberate act which will send antibodies to eradicate a disruptive influence. An outcome by design. Only once the risk of not breaking from the pursuit of conservative goals outweighs the risk of a disruptive innovation will you see some variation.
Maybe the AI slop will force people to start making something new. If everyone is a hero, nobody is
The algorithm brought me here 😏 looking forward to what I find in your channel

I work on my art books especially now that the weather is cold, I think so many people have projects that will take years to publish and we have all become so impatient in the modern age. :)
Stay patient, my friend. This stuff takes time. It's worth it.
Congrats on getting on the newyork times

I am so happy that I happened across one of your shorts. I think your work is dope. I look forward to your projects and hearing your thoughts in the future. God bless you.

Well played, sir.
I absolutely love that rig! Like you, I have several thermal printers and I'm always trying to come up with creative uses for them. I wish I had a setup like that. Question for you: What happens if you try to print a non-existent denomination, like a three dollar bill? I assume it isn't programmed to do that so what DOES it do in that situation?
@@BobPagani thanks, Bob! If I try to print a non-existent denomination it doesn’t do anything, but that seems like it could be a fun extension: alien money in whatever amount you specify. Hmmm… possibilities. 🙂
I did the same thing with an eight track years ago by removing the erase head and replacing it with a play record head and looping it back in the input.
@@stevearmstrong4561 that sounds like a fun experiment. I have yet to explore 8 track but it is just a matter of time. 🙂
Ade that was so trippy. You are a true bridge builder
@@markgreco1962 thanks Mark!
it is just hype. better embrace the new tools before its too late to adapt
I don’t believe that AI art will ever be indistinguishable from human made art, but I like this idea, and will implement in future videos 🙏🏻
No
I feel like I just got secretly hypnotized and I won’t know what I was hypnotized to do until years from now when I receive a call from an unknown number and I pick up to hear nothing but the exact perfect dissonant chord that causes me to leave my life behind and migrate to an island off the coast of Alaska where I will join an army of hypnotized warriors walking as one into the sea to fight a terrifying monster below the waves to save the world without anyone ever knowing of my tragic, unwilling sacrifice.
That's exactly the effect I was going for, but I didn't realize it was so obvious.
@ also the art is cool and I appreciate the moral behind and enjoy the end product of the experiment. Though maybe that’s the hypnotism speaking…🤔
Thanks! Your videos always feel like the supportive friend/wiser older sibling I wish I had 🤍
Nice mod. I had the MT4X and sold it via ebay a few years ago. Lovely machine, I thought about keeping it as a console but I needed space and money :)
At 70 years old, I look at this and say WOW! You are amazing. Incredible. So simple, right in front of everyone, and so amazing with so many possibilities. Thank you for sharing this bizarre yet soul searching technique. Fabulous. You are so talented!
Wow, thanks Mark. You made my day. 😊
looking to do this mod on my yamaha MT50… do you think it would be as simple as locating the equivalent tape speed pot on the board and installing the same switch mod? i have built various diy eurorack kits but havent modded an existing PCB since my gameboy back in high school
Maybe? It might take some poking around to find the right place for the switch and resistor. Another approach is to put a pot on the wires going to the motor like this: th-cam.com/video/gqYoT7TbUec/w-d-xo.html But hard to say without being familiar with the MT50. Good luck and be careful!
Very good
Fascinating! I enjoyed learning about your unique process and philosophy. Keep up the great work! ❤
Great thoughts . . . and art! I feel the same way. 🙂
