Our family never forgot Cardinal Sim. He still Bishop as he visited in our humble town. It was during Youth congress when he come to the Philippines. Together with his team he stayed in our simple home. We Aban family happy to served them in our own little way to give them comfort. Prayer for 2022 Election: God our Father as we prepare for our 2022 Elections, we put our trust in Your promise that You will send us leader after Your own heart and spirit. Lord Jesus, inspire all who seek office to be servant leaders who will put the greater good of the greater majority especially the poor, the marginalized and the vulnerable, above any personal or group interests; servant-leaders who will seek office to genuinely "serve and not to be served", servant leaders of integrity and compassion. Holy Spirit, enlighten our minds and hearts, that we may see clearly the needs of Your people and what candidates promise and their ability to fulfill these, that we choose rightly the leaders who will truly lead and serve - leaders after Your own heart and spirit, and leaders who will unite and lead us to do what is for the greater good of the greater majority and what is for Your greater glory. Father, Son and Spirit, You are the God of life and love, the Lord of history, be with us in this time of preparation for the coming elections, Amen. Farewell Cardinal Sim. You shall be missed by so many people whos lives you have changed. Its been an honour to know you. May you experience a Matthew 25:23 moment with Our Lord.

Unfortunately they didnt ask me to do the sermon/obituary. I would have made a sermon of about 40minutes with all the pluses and.minuses. All the punches will be thrown without niat jahat. I have watched him closely for 16years. Here are some snippets:- 1. He swapped a salary as engineer in a gas company of about 4200 for one of 300 as a priest. Would you? (Of course when he studied Theology in USA it was under sponsership of the local church. 2a. Highly competitive and dont want to lose Many people have one Masters degree. He made sure he had two. A MTheol from USA and an MBA from the local University. He tended to hide the later as people used to whisper - do we need a businessman priest? 2b. When he found that two local pastor had done a religious course at the Haggai Institute in Singapore, Sim made sure he did the same course a few years later. Semangat tidak mau kalah 3. Took over a bankrupt church, set up a diocese, recruited three priests and.left a thriving financial diocese. There is a priest retirement fund (though he didnt benefit from that) and a seminary fund. So the hidden MBA was useful after all? For this achievement alone he deserves his red hat. Pity six months after receiving we had the funeral. According to some of the lical church-:the pope pity him and gave him the red hat because he was sick. To go from bishop to cardinal is double promotion!!! 4. Was not that determined to go all out to find priests initially after he stepped forward. If so we would have 10-12priests by now. A group of four lads wanted to join the Franciscan order- 2 were from KB and 2 from BSB. After Sim stepped forward the aspirations of the other four were not realised. For the record I was not among the four 4. Good at praying over people spontaneously in the charismatic fashion 5. Not as good in biblical studies as one would imagine. There was a biblical quiz at the local church. He took part and it was a surprise to many when he didnt win the top prize considering he did biblical studies in his Masters course 6. Poor in diplomatic communication skills generally. Some examples:- a. Maybe he was brought up to tell it like it is. Once in the sermon he said he was not proud to be our.leader, the local parishoners were not participating in the activities of the parish. They came to church once a week. They should wake up and give more service to the parish. I was in the audience. I agreed with everything he said. But then I thought that he was shooting himself in the foot because doesnt- the fish rot from the head? B. At a mass in Seria his co celebrant made a mistake. This was a priest who had failed many of his courses. Sim immediately outburst- next time parents give us your smart sons! C. At another mass a local priest (ex computer scientist at the energy company) was describing his seminary in the USA. Sim then the bishop immediately turned to him and said, " Thats a seminary for old men!" The priest was startled. A tactless and completely unwarranted reply. The meaning was clear-,My usa university still better than your (old men's) seminary! D. At the chrism mass in Seria in 2018? He wagged his finger at all of us and said, "in life you get what you deserve!". It was a very hurtful statement. A better way to say it would be- Be careful what you do and how you behave as the bible says what you sow, you will reap. I was startled by his unforgiving nature. Isn't there Jesus to forgive us if anyone made mistakes? U judge from these examples the manner of coarse uncultured speech. 7. A trifle selfish. When his priest wanted to study Dogma and Doctrine course in USA he used a sermon to turn to the church elders say- This time he wants to study in UsA. The course alone costs more than 5000 dollars.We can't do this every year. I immediately thought-,when you studied in the USA no one objected.Now your subordinate wants to follow you to study in the US and you are making a fuss. Why? It seemed so petty. For the record the priest was sent anyway. I could go on.....The angel who writes in the book of gold would have recorded all his deeds so we let God judge Sim in his entirety. Once in his 61st year he said he was on the wrong side of 60. He was not yet ill. Sonething told me this guy will not live to be 70. He died aged 69.

The "Red Hat" in previous history was called a Galero that was given by the Pope to the newly elevated cardinal, and now that practice was discontinued in 1969 by Papal decree of Pope Paul VI. What Cardinal Advincula received was a Zucchetto and Biretta.
