Is there a season for charter boats/fishing boats for them to catch tuna or is it all year round? Would be nice to know what’s the quota limit to try protect the species from disappearing again. Nice video though!
Why do you tie these needles so short and what is the method of tying them?
Getton boys!! Cracking job keep up the hard work.
Nice one, cheers 🤙🏼
Is there a quota r Tuna in Uk ???in ireland you cant keep them but thats the crappy EU policy for you. I know would be keeping them and the EU can FO
Heya, yes, there is a limited quota in UK,, there are strict rules on BFT here too. These fish are part of a trial commercial fishery and caught under license. There are only 13 licensed commercial vessels this year. We each have a quota of 3000kg for the season. Cheers
Gt Tunny fishing😊 . New subscribers here👋🇬🇧👍🏼
Thanks for the sub 👍🏼
Catch and release always!
Aye, for us, the small ones are released, cheers.
Must have blinked, didn't see any releasing going on.
Tell that to the supertrawlers. Rod and line is not the issue.
Tell that to the supertrawlers. Rod and line is not the issue.
Awesome to see first hand ..
👍🏼
Love the vid, as i have your others. I've done some commercial fishing in the Caribbean and hope to start again next year. Just curious though, what sort of price range do you get fot the bluefin?
Cheers 👍🏼 how is the fishing in the Caribbean ? :) With regards prices, this depends on multiple factors. They are valuable, but certainly not as much as everyone would probably believe. The prices vary on a daily basis tbh. If you'd like to see market prices, check out Newlyn or Brixham fish market prices online 👍🏼 it gives you an idea of what fish sell for, including BFT. Cheers
@@F20_forager yeh I know the prices are nothing like what people believe. Know of someone who caught a 700lb bft in South Carolina and barely turned a profit. Fishing season for pelagics is just starting. Wahoo and mahi and yf tuna run through to June. I used to do lot of fishing for red fish in depths 600' to 1500'. If you are interested in how, captain fighter jet has yt channel in which fishes in a similar way only manually.
Sounds like some very exciting species you have over there 👍🏼👍🏼 thats some deep fish ! cheers, will take a look at the channel. Aye, for us here, the bigger fish tend not to sell that well tbh. I think it's because it's a fairly new fishery, and many UK buyers are not fully set up to process the big ones. A 700lb BFT is a beuty. Our biggest this year so far is 168kg. Go off like a train. Tight lines
Fishermen as usual take everything they can and give nothing back. Soon the tuna will be fished out like most other species around our shores.
Thank you for your opinion. In this case, my opinion is to respectfully disagree. The bluefin tuna fishery is only a trial fishery at this stage in the UK. There are only 13 commercially licensed vessels. It is management through responsible fishing. Individual fish are targeted, not entire shoals. We use rod and line only, not nets. There are strict catch limits and size limits and a limited, minimal quota. This protects undersized fish and ensures fish have bred. We are learning about these great fish. I do sell the catch. My aim is not overfishing or greed. I hope we can create a well managed and clean healthy fishery. Better this than huge pair trawlers hoovering up entire shoals with a lawless and unmanaged attitude, I'd say.
I disagree, first as stated there is a minimum size limit. Second, a catch limit of three fish. Lastly, there are only a few fishermen licensed for this fishery. In this fishery every fish is documented and registered by ICCAT. If you want to criticize a tuna fishery then look at the purse seine fishery that use nets a mile long or the guided net trap fishery in the Mediterranean.
Idiot.
Oh do give up 😂
Another expert sitting on his huge rse that in reality knows nothing Well done champ
New sub. Clean fishing well done.
Thank you, cheers 👍🏼
Good work men 😊 i was down newlyn last week and a boat had his 3 for the day , brilliant stuff.
Aye, nice one cheers 👍🏼 ah yes, I think that was my mate you saw landing in Newlyn 🐟👍🏼
Good fishing and even better, good treatment of the fish.
Cheers 👍🏼🎣
Great informative video. Nice to see good fish dispatch care. Does every muppet have hooks on them when towing, or just certain ones. Im off out in a couple of weeks for my first tuna trip🤞
Cheers 👍🏼 with regards to the muppets, most don't have hooks, they are there to attract only, then down the center line of the spreader bar is a 600lb mono, this has a 'stinger' attached. The stinger is the one muppet with a hook. This is typically trailed further behind the rest of the spreader bar 👍🏼👍🏼 Tight lines for your trip 🎣😎
@F20_forager thanks for the knowledge 👌
When did it become legal to take tunna?,forgive my ignorance but I was told if we catch one we had to return it???
Thanks for your question. It's not legal to catch or take tuna in the UK without a license to do so. I have a commercial license on my vessel to catch and take a maximum of 3t, for this season, of these great fish. There were only 13 commercial licenses issued this year. There are also some catch and release licenses that are mostly operated by charter fishing vessels. This is different to my license.
Loved watchin that, hopefully long may they stay around.
Cheers 👍🏼 thanks for the feedback. Aye, I hope the fish come back year on year too :)
@@F20_foragerThey won't come back from the expensive restuarant, all about the money
😂 All about responsible fishing mind, if we look after the stocks, then there should be enough to keep selling to that restaurant you talk of 👍🏼😁
Excellent work. You deserve top money for the care you put into your catch. Nice to see.
Thank you 👍🏼
Very slick fish handling; just what we want to see. Shame others do not take so much trouble.
Thank you 👍🏼
How much do you get per kg? Can you sell direct to consumers?
Thanks for the question. The price per kg can vary depending upon multiple factors. Bluefin Tuna in the UK is highly regulated. We can only sell to ICCAT registered buyers. We can assist buyers in becoming registered. I am also an ICCAT buyer, so I could technically buy my own fish from the registered boat and then sell it directly to consumers. However, I'm not currently set up for processing the fish and currently sell them whole. Cheers 👍🏼
Amazing video 😊 tight lines lozzfish
Cheers Lozzfish 👍🏼
Fish Locker is well gel
Maybe, but hats off to him. He catches a lot of fish 🐟
Fish locker has a catch and release licence and from what I have seen on his channel his tuna are far larger.
Geddon lads 👏🏻👏🏻
Cheers 👍🏼
You made a superb video . Quite informative too . Next time take us to the fish market , we want to know about the price and the destination of the fish . Cheers lads well played . Great content .
Thank you 👍🏼 will see what we can do on a future video re the market or buyers and that side of it. We already produce traceability videos for each fish for our buyers. Will release these at some point too. Cheers, all the best
Well done glad to see it's all comming together keep em comming
Cheers, dude ! 👍🏼
Fun to watch! Happy for you guys, nice job!
:) aye, cheers 👍🏼
That’s the money. What a great setup. Tuna all round North and South Coast. Let’s hope it stays that way
Thanks 👍🏼 great to hear they are on the North Coast, too. Hope so, great to have them in our waters
how do you get such low fight times ?
Great question, we are using the massive 130 reels, which have big drag settings, twinned with 130lb class rods, and we fight fish from the 'fighting stations', which are part of the boat. This helps us apply a lot of pressure to the fish and capture them quickly. Because we are aiming to sell our catch, we chose this setup specifically to avoid long fight times and thus stop the tuna heating up, which can damage the meat.
@@F20_forager very impressive - have you had any snap off?
Yes 1. We had a triple hook up, and I lost 1 due to a snap off. Landed the other 2. I've also lost 2 fish because maybe we put a touch too much drag on, too early. But maybe they just came off. We had just swapped a stinger out, and it happened twice on the same stinger on the same day. So maybe there was an issue with the stinger 🤷♂️
Quality that mate.. lovely fish 👍
Cheers 👍🏼
Nice video guys
Thank you 👍🏼
Is it too nosey to ask how much each of those is worth?😂
This depends on multiple factors. They are valuable, but certainly not as much as everyone would probably believe. The prices vary on a daily basis tbh. If you'd like to see market prices, check out Newlyn Market prices online 👍🏼 it gives you an idea of what fish sell for, including BFT. Cheers
Market prices seem to vary - BFT landed in Brixham making good money. It depends how many merchants in supply chain from boat to table/consumer. 90Kg BFT made £1700 wholesale. Youd Double that if you want to process fish and sell to hotels etc direct, but costs higher. Plenty risks in buying selling fish.
hello bro, I'm from Indonesia 🇲🇨, please make a video on how to make your fishing line, I see it very happy, the fish can immediately release itself, and it's very good for me to try
Heya matey, yes, it's a very handy tool. We call them mackerel strippers or gurdy. I buy the lines (with hooks) from someone who makes them for me. But check this vid out: th-cam.com/video/Yh7JfAOuPZM/w-d-xo.html cheers for watching 👍🏼
Tom have you got any bass entitlement for your boat ?
Yes, I do have Bass but not rod and line bass 🙈 only nets
Saw you coming in again this morning......you gave me the thumbs down 👎 mate I waa out on the manicals Sunday its was alive with tuna ....they were everywhere Better luck next time mate 👍 😉

th-cam.com/video/H2qEYr10KfE/w-d-xo.html
Enjoyed your film, seeing the 130's brought back many memories of Blue Marlin fishing.....I have still got some new medium tension downrigger release clips which have a grip pad to prevent any line damage.Made by offshore Tackle, plus I may still have some new Aftco roller trollers which we used mostly for flatline rods to change the angle of lures so they caught the air better and "smoked" . I have used them in rigger mode as well. depends how much drag you have on the clip with the pressure of spreader bars. If you get stuck ping my son Mike at T.A.Outdoors and he will forward to me . Good luck with the Tuna, nice to see something different....I want to see more !!..
Cheers for getting in touch, and thank you 🙏 also for suggesting the release clips by offshore tackle, just checked them out 👍🏼 we've bought some of the Aftco rollers but tbh they are releasing due to the drag, especially in a bit of weather. Fishing weather windows here in Cornwall atm. We've caught some good fish now. New episodes will be upcoming soon. I'd love to catch a Marlin. Have you caught a Bluefin yet ? :) Many thanks 👍🏼 Tom
Got he on the bleedy TH-cam now yewwwwwww

Enjoying the video guys. Whats the minimum size limit for the tuna?
Thanks 👍🏼 The minimum size for landing BFT commercially in the UK is 30kg or 115cm fork length
Try a makaral with a circle hook through its bottom lip .on a drop weight rig
Great idea 👍🏼 cheers
Inspiring! 🌟
Thank you! 🙂
Gents - from a fisheries scientist that has worked on tuna for a number of years it is good to see you using best practice for the retrieval/processing and storage of BFT onboard. I hope the markets appreciate your efforts

😂 team building. Yes, I definitely agree 👍🏼 thanks very much. The next trip was more successful, the video coming soon ;)
What's the size limit, they look a bit small.
The minimum size for our license is 30kg or 115cm fork length. My understanding is that a fish that is over the minimum size will have had at least one breeding season. Cheers
Lads good luck but your riggin is way off, if u want some help id be happy to help out ,
Thanks 👍🏼 please find me on Instagram fh20_forager and PM. I'd be interested in any advice. Thanks. We have changed to roller clips atm
Creels. V nice. Far too much plastic in commercial and leisure fishing.
Thanks, and I agree 👍🏼 The guys making these withy creels are working hard to make them a viable option
Won't be long before the tuna are gone because of over fishing fisherman can not stop themselves from taking far too much just look at the fish stocks that have been diverstated by the EU now admitting that they don't know what the fish stocks are much lower than they thought perhaps even to the point of extinction just look at how difficult it is to catch a mackaral don't see the Shoals on the surface like you did 30years ago
Any chance you could share some sources regarding the EU and fish stock comment? Many thanks
More get caught in nets by accident
THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENT, ALL COMMENTS GOOD OR MISCONSTRUED, ALL HELP THE TH-cam ALGORITHM FOR THE VIDEO... PLEASE SHARE YOUR SOURCE ON FISH STOCKS
I can't speak for other countries, I can say we have a limited quota of 3 tons for 2024 season. I won't be taking a gram over this quota. We are only using rod and line to bring high-grade fish to market. These fish are incredible, and I hope stocks remain healthy through responsible fishing. Thanks for your comment 👍🏼
I fish the same area as these guy ..... trust me in the last 5 years i have NEVER seen so many tuna in the Falmouth bay Im talking hundreds of thousands of tuna some days out there ..... these few commercial rod and line boats are no threat to the numbers out there ,its allvery easy for many to listen to the media but until your actual out there and see how many blue fin are in Cornwall this time of year you have no right to complain....... i and the commercial guys see this every day out there . Keep up the good work lads 3t quota dose not ever scratch the surface of the stocks Good luck and keep puting the videos out there well done 👏🏻
Good luck!
Thanks! 👍🏼
