Hey folks... Dr. Alan Doucette here. I'm a professor of Chemistry at Dalhousie University, in Halifax, Canada. I specialized in chemical analysis, and over the years as a research scientist, I've created several new tools to better characterize biological systems - especially when it comes to protein analysis. I'm also passionate about teaching. So I put these videos together to help my students visualize some of the concepts presented in various analytical courses. I welcome your feedback, and will continue to post new videos that I hope will one day help you in your studies.
ChatGPT and the rise of AI
No, I don't think the machines are going to rise up and take over the planet. But as an educator, I'm excited (and maybe a little scared) for the future potential of ChatGPT. What opportunities lie ahead? What challenges will it bring?

What research looks like
มุมมอง 1.4K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Here's an example of an ongoing research project out of my chemistry lab at Dalhousie University. It's still a 'work in progress', but hopefully you get a sense of the process we use to design and test a new instrument.
Environmental Racism and Mass Spectrometry
มุมมอง 3.2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Mass spectrometry is a scientific instrument - a tool, that can be used to characterize chemical compounds. In this video, Claudia Flynn showcases the use of mass spec to profile environmental contaminants, and raise awareness of how indigenous communities are disproportionately affected by these contaminants.
How to Write a Scientific Essay
มุมมอง 8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Is 'paraphrasing' a form of 'plagiarism'? Well, maybe. Here are some tips on how to write a science review paper or essay.
Fragmentation in mass spectrometry
มุมมอง 8K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Whether it's by electron ionization, or tandem mass spectrometry, the formation of fragment ions is not a random process.
Top down vs bottom up proteomics
มุมมอง 23K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Two different strategies we can use to identify proteins with mass spectrometry.
Proteome analysis workflows
มุมมอง 13K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Mass spectrometry plays an essential role in proteomics analysis. But so do many other tools, including separation.
Proteomics vs Genomics
มุมมอง 13K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Sequencing DNA is easy. Proteomics analysis has extra challenges, but it can help answer many questions that genomics cannot.
MALDI mass spectrometry
มุมมอง 8K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry comes in two different flavours.
Study Montage

The key to success is proper preparation. This video is part of a longer video on this channel dealing with how to solve difficult problems. Here's a link to that video. th-cam.com/video/vj2tWWJfrS0/w-d-xo.html
Electron ionization and mass spectrometry

Thank you !!! That helped a lot.❤
Wait but why Fleming's right hand rule here force is generated ?
There's end credit scene lol
What you think ? You didnt get masters degree ? Instead .....got direct phD .....???? Students with just a school education was enough to be the general manager .......so the question of lecturers and assistant professors ruled out in the year 2013 .... Earlier people with grades system did not make a lecturer job in the 1990 and .......people did not get a lecturers job with a masters degree ...... In the city people can do research with ....grades that did not have to be either a graduate or post graduate ............. In the 1990s students were reporting to work only by motor vehicles and many professors had been using only a two wheeler to report to work ....... In 2024 .....students are more .......facilities to conveyance .......than professors .......... Mode of conveyance suggested affluence of the professors ??! Those who could not have such life style of vehicles were not considered to be lecturers or professors ....... Your education depended on the mode of conveyance and dress code ......and not necessarily the content .... I dont understand why professors teaching only structures could be teaching hydrology or environmental engineering .... Company like TCS and many software companies .......had more .........presentations on any topic ...... That does not seem to be appropriate ........ English is only a medium to communicate the subject across states ..but it requires expertise to teach poetry or statistics .... Maths and physics are again a tool to study engineering .....but .....requires expertise to teach .......maths or physics ..... So you are expecting a single person to be expert in biology to astrophysics ???? How it is possible to learn agriculture and engineering simultaneously ??? Lecturer ? Professor ? GM Principal ? What occupation can structure do ?? Everything ???
Thank you for this nice video! In the diagram that you display at 12:20, can you/someone explain what the parameters 'a' and 'q' represent?
Coach Greg told me to go leave a comment more stupid than last time.
If you have difficulty with the dilution I have another formula that also does all in one. Let’s say A is the known analite and X is the unknown, and std is the standard → Ra/Rstd : Ca = Rx/Rstd : Cx
Excellent summary! Thank you!
Thanks a lot. It cleared a lot of uncertainties I had.
'Tis a fine barn, English, but sure it is no microfluidic pool
What is the textbook that is used in this course?
I love you, sir.
Are you greg ducette brother?
Yup. Twin, actually. No joke. We are not identical twins though.
Impressive thank you
thank you so much!!
Wow! What a great video! Thank you!
❤😂🎉
This video was fab really. Thank U so much

i enjoy a lot your videos
Super
Wonderful job sir.everyone must watch this.
Thank you very much. Extremely helpful
amazing
One of the best lecturers
The very best concise explanation! Thank you.
all your videos are clear, thank you !
Wow ! Thanks. Like to know more about any proactical everyday use of Quadrople Ion Trap M.S. Any applications for early detection of brain health in humans for example ?
bruh im just a random phd first year doing research and found your channel super helpful getting preped for my career...
Hi, for determination of K percentage in a fertilizer, I make calibration curve mixing standards and unknown. As 10 ml of unknown to all balloons and different amounts of standard, 1 balloon only has unknown without any standard. Why is that? Shouldn't the b from y=ax+b and signal of the balloon without standard be the same? If they are not what should I do? I'm confused, please help
perfect perfect perfect
"welcome to your first mountain stage 😅" Great video btw
Thanks a million for all your great videos on MS Spect., you did a great job in presenting a high tech and complicated topic in a simple and understsndable way. I really enjoed watching them.
You deserve so much recognition! Amazing ❤
Amazing ❤!
Well explained and a wonderful instrument. Thank you! 👏
Thank you so, so much
Hello, could someone explain how you find an hexane from counting 3 CH2 and 1 CH3 at 11:37 please ? Where do you see the other 2 CH2 ?
that's the best explanation i found! thank you.
really good explanation, thank you:)
Thank you
Subscribed, you explain really well. Congrats!
You are a lifesaver and an excellent teacher, many thanks
Thanks!
Some use elemental analyzer before doing all this, why is that?
Fantastic video , love the jokes in the middle😂
I am a proteomics professor in France. Your course is just great. thank you
#Left hand gang
