CD has superior audio to most streaming platforms as they use lossy compression formats like mp3 and AAC, whereas CD is uncompressed 16 bit/44.1 kHz PCM audio. Yes there are lossless and even "high res" (up to 24 bit/96 kHz) services like tidal, but even then they can only really match CD sound quality, as it's technical specs are more than enough for the limits of human hearing.
Great video. I have roughly 1000 CDs. Began collecting in the late 80s and haven't stopped. For some time now my niche is owning AAD CDs. A format that I grew up with and love.
It's strange, my best friend is 6 years younger than me and grew up with 80's music. He didn't like the 70's ELO sound but absolutely loves this album!
Streaming doesn't preserve film. You own a copy its yours to watch forever.
ROGEXER GLOVER DEEP PURPLE MACHINE HEAD 25TH ANNIVERSARY, REMASTER , (REMIX) IS SO GOOD, I CANNOT LISTEN TO THE STUDIO LP ANYMORE, IT HAS JUST THE RIGHT TOUCHES TO THE LEADS AND YOU WILL NOTICE A BIG DIFFERRANCE
Jeff Lynne’s catchy songwriting ability was at full strength here. Unfortunately, the heavy use of synth drums and keyboards killed the warmth and life out of the songs. If the album was recorded with ELO’s standard late 1970s sonic sensibilities, it might’ve been one of their best sellers.
You could be right.
Physically media won’t go away, it’s more alive than ever. Music, movies. 📼 📀 💿
I hope that you're right.
It's crazy. These prices have driven me out of the market.
It is crazy.
Hi Steven, I still collect CDs by buying online, from record stores and from thrift stores. Yesterday I received my order for 100 jewel cases from Sleeve City. I have 400-500 CDs and many from thrift stores (as you know) have damaged/scratched cases with glue from hard to remove price labels. Since I buy/clean and re-sleeve my vinyl I decided to replace the jewel cases. A friend of mine encouraged me to do so and for about a buck/jewel case I personally think it’s worth it. I also rip all of my CDs to FLAC files and put them onto a SSD connected to a Mac Mini M1 which is what I use for a Roon Core (music management software). This allows me to listen to my CDs at the gym via streaming through Roon ARC. I have an Oppo BDP-105 Blue Ray player for CDs and SACDs. I also use an Audiolab 6000 CD transport connected to a Holo Audio Cyan 2 DAC. I do subscribe to Tidal and Qobuz and use them through Roon. I try to play LPs and CDs everyday. Thanks for your vid and supporting CDs!
Thank you so much for your kind words.
Another point is that I can sometimes put on a CD and rediscover songs that I may have not liked back in the day but for some reason really appeal to me now. Part of the problem is that it's primarily a 1 song market now, where as from the late 60s until streaming took hold music consumption was album oriented. To a large degree album appreciation is a lost art for the younger generation. Too many people, quite literally, don't know what they're missing.
For me personally, i try to buy movies on sales and i compare the price on multiple sources. Amazon does its prime day and Barbes and Noble does sales for the Criterions. The big deluxe sets i try to buy for the movies that i love and the 4k format for the movies that i love and classics that could use an inprovement. Because as technology gets better, older movies look and sound better. I like the choice to do it even though i know its unrealistic to expect to get everything all at once. I know ill probably never be satisfied but its apart of the fun. It just makes me wish i wouldve gotten into this hobby years ago but im now at the age where having a set up feels nicer than just using online services.
I've had a wonderful time collecting CDs during the vinyl revival. I have over 4000 now.
4000 ... impressive. You must have a lot of happy memories.
Hi Steven, I still have about fifty CD’s and two Sony players and a CD Walkman. I totally agree with you about the physical appearance, sound quality and the art work and the liner notes inside. Seven years ago I owned about 1200 or more Compact Disc but I moved to a smaller apartment and I thought it might be small to house them. I was so wrong and I regret that I gave them away to friends and the library. Some of them can’t even be found on my streaming services. I always go in my art room where they are and take them out and either look at them ( memories ) or play them and I’am transported to various places and events in my life. I’am so glad that I took them with me when I moved. Thank you for your account on owning them.
Hi, thanks so much for sharing this with me. I appreciate it.
Yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
Bello hoy enero 25. Estoy amándolo. Viendo 👀 sus video escuchando sus melodías desde Colombi ❤
But not DVD in Europe.
❤
My mind price for 4k is 20$. So during boxing day sale, I snapped up Furiosa and Dune 2 for about $24 cdn plus tax each. I thought it was great! Just the other day both were on an even bigger sale at $16.80 cdn! So I am convinced there will be windows of opportunity still. Except for the ones that just aren't carried in any volume anymore. Right after saying I would not buy anything over 30, I just got the steel book version of who is darkman for a bit over $40 cdn on sale. Prices are crazy .... But wait a bit and may get lucky.
I agree with you the price of movies is wild. Thats why i have a limit of 30 dollars and under per movie.
Again & again love it
Cant wait to hear it
The price difference between the Uk , America, Canada is insanely crazy recently.
Unobstructed View is cheaper when a sale is on, which is rare
80.00 for Night of the Creeps to Canada Even shipping to my USA address with the exchange is still outrageous
The exchange rate doesn’t help either 🇨🇦
VAN HALEN 1984 is the best!!
you're just living my life but 30 years later I bought most of my physical media at the beginning of DVD after the switch from VHS, a movie whatever the year was 76.84CAD for one, steel boxes with cards and stuff where in the 115CAD tv series like Buffy were sold one season at a time NO PACKS and it was around 154CAD per season there's also the fact that when DVD was new they released garbage quick cash versions to "test the market" then if it sold they finally made a proper version with bonuses movies likes Alien I bought 2x in VHS then 2x in DVD and 1x in bluray and then I decided I had paid more than enough, they are bringing back the 1990 prices it seems, people have been spoiled by the fall of physical media and now believe 5-10$ is a normal price it never was that was the "zero demand because of streaming we need to get rid of these" price but you are creating a demand now so price go back to where they were except you don't have to pay a 1000CAD for a complete tv show now that's a plus, they are attempting to do the same with videogames btw people forgot but before the internet a sought for videogame not "retro" but current was in the 188CAD and not ajusted for inflation it's what I remember paying then...that's the price Sony really really wants to bring back
No it hasn't troll.
A $10-$20 Blu-ray is for the mass market. You can build a full collection of all your favorite movies for that price. A $60 release for the same movie is for hardcore collectors who love that specific movie. I'd rather buy a $60 movie that I really love than 3 $20 movies that I like but can live without on my shelf. But only if that $60 movie is a top quality release with nice packaging and appropriate extras. But at the moment I'm not buying anything. Collecting has become a chore in so many ways, and especially hard-to-get limited editions piss me off. I'm still technically a collector, but I haven't bought anything in a long time...
I just stick with blu rays
In addition to "The Shape I'm In," "Sin City" is also a cover, from Graham Parsons. Definitely a lot of really good songs on this album, stronger than the 2009 release Above the Ground, IMO. My favorites are "Magic Town," "Up to the Minute," and "A Few Good Moments."
They have to lower the price if they want to compete with streaming
I agree with you.
I agree, I'm in Canada as well. I bought Demolition man, it was pricey, but it was an awesome movie. I'm countering by simply buying far fewer movies. And there are some I'd love but not willing to pay the amount for the double dipping! Like Austin Powers, right now on amazon for $82, I bought all three movies on blu ray for $30, it's a comedy, I'm sure it's cool in 4k, but regular blu ray is fine for a comedy for me!
I'll pay $25 USD and not a penny more. I'll wait for price drops. In most cases, I already have the blu-ray, so the 4K is just a QOL upgrade and I don't need it immediately.
i'm not at all surprised. physical media is making a big comeback, so naturally the corporate bigwigs are going to take advantage and jack up prices. this is why i've always just stuck with dvds. they're still decently priced for the most part, and the lesser quality doesn't bother me.
Ebay has demolition man DVD for $4.00, you don't need it in 4K UHD.
Best price I found on Demolition Man was 54.00 at Bay St Video in Toronto.
There should not be a "regulation" on movie prices. That's stupid. This is entertainment, not food and toilet paper.
It’s not the price thats off its the worth. Its simply not worth that amount.
You answered your own question when you said streaming has taken over. Physical media is dying. I think the companies need to ditch 4K and concentrate on Blu Rays and DVDs. If they can sell more product in one format they will be better off.
I'm not willing to go any price but if you already have the movie nobody is pressuring you to buy it again
Wait for the sales....I just started collecting 4k and I got a lot of 4ks for under $20 during the Black Friday sales. Also, used blurays are less likely to be scratched than used dvds so I check those out.
Se7en 4K $84 on Amazon Australia. We can't buy it local at JB Hi Fi.
I've noticed it too especially after Best Buy stopped selling physical movies. Braveheart 4K Steelbook going for $80+ dollars? It's just crazy.
Saying there should be a price regulation where the whole of the US economy is based on the Free Market is just never going to happen... It seems to be coming as a shock to the US and Canada that they're now being charged siilar prices that the UK have been paying for some time. Maybe we were a test market and they found what they could get away with...
Obviously depends on country although $35 Canadian is only £19.50. When 4k is released in UK they generally go by recommend retail price or RRP of £24.99. ALL stores generally do this with blu ray at £14.99 and DVD at £9.99.. BUT what IS good in the UK is the permanent sales. Example HMV, Amazon and Zavvi and others will drop new releases to £20.00 on a month. HMV always does Buy Two 4K for £30, others are buy three for £40. Think I bought 15 UHD over Xmas. Only one that was £25 was the " limited edition Incendies in 4K " in box with booklet. I went for several 2 for £30. And although I'm Not a collector of niche labels or Steels I did buy three steel books all about £12 , Not new films but limited and great graphics, like Atomic Blonde, super 8 anniversary, contagion oh and an anniversary re release with Atmos of Glory. UK release prices are nothing special but there always seems to be offer, sometimes at very good Prices , Dark knight trilogy £20. I thought actually Canada was better than the USA??. I know at least across the pond I guys have a lot more criterion options than we do. Still at least we have HMV which is our main town centre physical media shop. Like most it's mostly online. Always interesting to see how other countries do. ✌️✌️
my biggest annoyance is when a boutique label gets their hands on what was a mainstream popular release and the price is double compared to if it was just released normally. all because they do some new artwork or add some postcards. it's even worse if it's the only option available to buy.
like what?
Unless the boutique labels did have one of my favorite movies encoded by Fidelity in Motion (as Arrow, Second Sight, Eureka and BFI are known doing), it's a shame that even one of my favorites to watch (like The Raid: Redemption; the Sony steelbook 4K release) has almost identical prices to a boutique release on sale (for $25 to $35 each) with the encoding not as great like FiM does. Despite the new artwork for boutique releases, that is the best encoded for the media themselves. With the increase about of 4K AI "upscaled" releases (most offensive are the Cameron catalog titles, Wallace & Gromit, and recently Se7en) and the reusing of 2K DI without rescanning the entire negatives (recently is Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2 meaning reediting the entire movie back to start despite all the things Tarantino is known for his filmic picture quality; the former still have the black and white R rated version of the Crazy 88 fight scene instead of the unrated Japanese cut contains the colored and extended version of it), along with not enable to get the far-field mixes of the films (in lossless) showcases less care to the consumers and more to the corporations on not enable to get best of both worlds for the media themselves. Even for 4K increased the standards does not mean perfect releases for home media in general. As of result, fan editors are actually looking for the LaserDisc releases and DTS Theatrical/Cinema CD-ROMs of the movies to audio capture and sync them together at once. All the last option is to rent the discs to support the rental stores, and buy them if that the one feels like I will support the restoration team (in the proper way). Better if the release is encoded by FiM.
Interesting video and have to agree! Subbed
It's price gouging! Everything has gone up, and all the companies are going to take advantage of it, as long as they posssibly can.
Inflation is ramping back up, bad numbers just came out of Germany today
