The Future of Pokemon (And How We Got Here)
I wanted to talk about my experience with the Pokemon series and what I hope to see Gamefreak try for their upcoming Pokemon projects. I talk about what I liked, what I didn't like and give some suggestions that maybe The Pokemon Company will take to heart ;). I also talk about Pokemon Legends Arceus, Scarlett and Violet as well as other Pokemon games that had an impact on me.

Another person who started with mystery dungeon!! My first ever video game I owned was Blue Rescue team for my original DS (pink because it was cheaper XD)
I still have that original copy, alongside my early copies of Shadows of Almia and Platinum, most of my other ones I sold to buy new games when I was a kid, only to need to rebuy them over these last few years.
I honestly think the Switch 2 will allow for a new golden pokemon era
Answer to first question: Yes
Bro started his pokemon career with the best game as his first one, game freak never had a chance 😭. Jokes aside, i think game freak definitely needs to slow the pacing of game releases because they've basically just done what nintendo and Square enix did with prime 4 and kingdom hearts 4, respectively. They finally decide to take more time on a new release but since they aren't showing nothing, it's turning into a tug-o-war situation where people WANT to see the game but also want it to have the time to be developed. Imo i feel like if tpci pushed the spin-offs games in terms of advertising more during the 2000-10s(and did some quality control on some of them, cmon pokemon dash was some cheeks and did we really need pokemon channel?) They would to thos day have a way to keep pokemon in the spotlight while they work on new games for say 3-5 years, they really only got lucky with how explosive POGO got and and the recent pokemon cards boom but each year niabtic keeps shitting the bed and hey at least they made a nrw tcg game that is more casual friendly so they capitalized on that, but the gacha aspect will likely turn people away, but if there was more traditional spin-offs rhat were one time 40-60 dollar purchases to fill in the game years to satisfy the pokemon itch while being different and having the series tried in different genres, like they did a lot in the 2000s, i don't think they would have been stuck in that yearly release loop from gen 6-8.
I think that the main things people will complain about are: bad model designs. removal of pokemon [again!] glitches/lag. graphical issues.
calling it,people will complain about the new pokemon models in ''legends za''
Gen 4 remakes were terrible, they removed features that the originals had...like how, why 🫠 The comparison to xenoblade 2 (2017) is a polarizing truth. Loved Scarlet/Violet, they cooked with stories, lore and characters. Sadly performance issues are still there years later ugh. "HD-2D" mainline pkmn would be excellent mix of both. Ever since Gen 4 onward, they've had 3D world overview but with 2D sprites still and 2D camera. GF should capitalize on that further, especially as a remake.
So we all had the same childhood I miss it (born in 2000)
extremely underrated, you earned a sub
I got one of those 'how was this video for you' i immediately put 5 stars
holy peak 🔥🔥 Super good content 1000 subs by next week for sure on a more real note I think these next games are gonna be make or break for the series. Pokémon’s at the biggest it’s ever been since red and blue and gamefreak really has the chance now to cement the franchise as a big power player moving forward if they could just take some more time to fix up its flaws
Dude octopath style graphics on a Pokémon game would be sooooo tight! Most Pokémon fans don’t care if it’s 3d graphics. I think we just want a good, fun game. Maybe I’m wrong tho haha
No I think you're right, given how many of us loved Scarlet/violet even tho they looked pretty bad lol. It would be nice to have both tho!
@ I would like to have good Pokémon models tho. The ones we’ve had for a while are pretty bland lol
Awe! I’m one of the first 1000! I’m number 618. I cannot wait to see where you go from here!
Welcome to the club! Glad you're here :D excited to continue pumping out the content ;)
Played fire red around 2006-2007 and I loved the games ever since. I actually thought the anime was dumb cuz it always ended the same (team rocket blasting off again) but once I played fire red when I was 5 I was in love since. Loved emerald as well so I just relayed both games on repeat We couldn’t afford a DS but my older brother pirated pearl later and while I didn’t like it as much I still liked it. Then took a break from the games while still collecting cards and watching the anime. But then I got a 3DS with Y and I fell in love with the series even harder than before. Oras was peak also you should check it out but man SM was a amazing story my first thought was “man I wish I could I play this on the tv to show my siblings how good this is” still my favourite gen besides 3 with 5 a close third The switch era definitely needed work but in retrospect I still enjoyed it. Still gen8 probably the lowest the series has been. I still like sword and shield. I used to hate it but I introduced pokemon to my girlfriend last year and watching her love Gen 8 I let her borrow made me realize it still has that magic just could have been so much more. Arceus was amazing and with better graphics it would have been an easy best switch game imo and I’m absolutely hype for Z-A just for the fact the legends series is here to stay. SV was the worst blow for me considering so many people who also felt disappointed with gen 8 were hyping SV before release (review copies or pirating) and when I got my hands on it I could barely play. I ended up doing two playthroughs and both attempts I got burned out around area zero. A game being buggy and terrible FPS is far worse to me than a game that’s just lacking ideas like Gen 8. If SV had another year in the oven it would have been a Gen 7 level of hype for me. Hoping ZA isn’t the same. SV is a good game at heart and I do have fun when I play it I just have to ignore it when it acts up and it’s exhausting. Here’s to a future where the games will be like other RPGs. Also I’ve been saying Gen 5 octopath traveller type remake since that game came out and when BDSP showed that GF probably isn’t going to do remakes in current gen style anymore
yo, i've been looking for a shape channel, cool. definitely subscribing, can't wait to see you hit 1k
Glad I could fill your shape needs haha, really appreciate the support 🙏🏻
7:05 Typhlosion was fixed in Scarlet & Violet. But some other Pokémon do still need to be fixed. Most importantly in my opinion are Salamence, Skarmory, and Eelektross.
I don't think I've actually seen Typhlosion in Scarlet/Violet :0 def liked the regional variant in Arecus even tho it looked high lol. Yeah salamance was one of my fav pokemon when I first played HeartGold and 3d did not translate well for it
@@TriNintendo ever since Legends Arceus some Pokémon now have different poses for whether or not they’re in battle, and for both Typhlosions their flames are only lit when they’re in battle. Standard Typhlosion still looks like it did before when it’s not in battle, but in battle it looks like it’s supposed to. Hisuian Typhlosion is similar; it only looks high when it’s not in battle lol. Salamence, Skarmory, and Eelektross didn’t get that treatment, they’re still always floating no matter what. Actually Skarmory is even worse now because they made it to where Pokémon look at each other when they’re battling, and they made Skarmory fly very low to the ground, so more often than not it’s always looking up in battle.
Wow that's so interesting. I wonder how they prioritize these visual updates. Seems like a pretty big oversight and super immersion breaking to see skarmory look and act like that
From the Pokémon Home datamine that showed every single party icon in the style of SV, mega salamence has an icon of him standing on the ground instead of awkwardly floating
HD2D Pokémon would be a dream. Also a game with multiple main quests/ modes. Similar to different job types or classes. Ranger. Breeder. Contests. And you choose your path. An alternate/ sister series set in ultra beasts dimension would be super cool. Give the vastly different design principals the monsters use. More sequels to previous games as well
Love the idea of not just making you a person that beats the gyms and champion. I feel like this format could be awesome in the MMO style Pokemon game where different roles and classes are necessary for maybe guilds? I'm not a huge MMO guy so maybe that would suck haha but I love the idea of choosing your own adventure and just existing in the world of Pokemon
Too bad HD2D is kinda patented by Square-Enix iirc
I dont really want a 2D pokemon game, ever since I was a kid on diamond and pearl I have always dreamed of a 3D pokemon game. Like I was glued to pokemon battle revolution I loved that game so much I just never cared about the sprite art tbh. Scarlet and violet do have problems but I love that they gave pokemon actual textures and are scaling pokemon more accurately, plus the story was so much better than sword and shield's story. I want a game like battle revolution but with an adventure, I guess also like colosseum, gale of darkness, and also stadium 1 and 2, I do not want another sprite art game tbh 😭
That's valid! I have really fond memories of hooking up my DS with my brother and cousin to battle revolution and seeing our team in 3d! I think if scarlet/violet was just further refined it would be amazing. If they can find a way to just give more character to the 3d models I'm all for it! They've been doing it little by little too so hopefully they're cooking up something nice for switch 2!
I am not a huge fan of gen 7 and 9. But yeah I agree with everything here. Gen 6 was so much hype back then
It's weird that the hype for Gen 6 hasn't been eclipsed. It feels like switch Pokemon should've been even bigger of a deal but I never felt it. Thanks for commenting:)
Reposting this comment. My predictions for the future of Pokemon are Pokemon Legends ZA Early and Pokemon Black and White remakes Holiday 2025 and Pokemon Red and Green Remakes 30th anniversary celebration release Early and Gen 10 Holiday 2026 30th anniversary and I made a post on Reddit for why in depth.
I'll have to check it out! I'd honestly be okay with them pushing Gen 10 back another year. I want it to be the best Pokemon we've experienced since Gen 5!
Pokemon peaked with Colosseum.
Totally debatable lol. Colosseum vibes were immaculate. Better than the arena gym battles in SW/SH fs
Let’s go, 600th sub 😎
AYYYYYYYY. Nice name btw;) I mean what ..my name's Tri not Josh....
Heyo! Gonna say the same things as others, I'm here because algorithm is really full of surprise sometimes haha. Content de te découvrir ! Lovely video overall, and I do have hope for the future of the franchise after the risk taken recently. Now obviously, quality needs to step up massively to keep up (SV is really unacceptable technically, but also content wise for the region). However, Arceus brought some lovely refresh that needs to be build upon, and I hope that Z-A will be a great Legends game, especially with megas back! If they can bounce back from that (and please take the power of Switch 2 to compensate your dev issues if needed), then we can look at another golden age. Also yes, get us the old 3/4/5 gen games on a virtual console-like, we are used to a big screen like the Switch now and can't come back on the DS/3DS! I think that Internet Pitstop also summed it up very well with its two videos regarding the regions, and what made Pokémon games so charming, lovely and unique. Recent regions just didn't felt that Pokémon-esque, if I can put it that way. And I feel like its the big red flag of the series right now, for maaany games. Unova was the last region I really have good memories of it regarding its atmosphere, music, ambiance, cities etc... And I'm not talking about nostalgia for that! Good games can also be good corridors! But its not for nothing that we are considering these games as the old golden age of Pokémon. Playing since D/P/PT, X&Y is surprisingly the only games I do not have memories of, despite having finished them. I didn't finished SM (stopped at the league, couldn't beat it) which is already a big flag. I missed the Switch train for its first years (Let's Go didn't helped due to its catching mechanic), and SWSH wasn't just right to me.. Region-wise, but also in its quality. I happily took the train back on BDSP since. ORAS is the only one standing out of this mess, being a great game that I enjoyed discovering, and with great postgame content (Delta episode!). I do hope that the next games WILL be stable from a performance perspective, it is the bare minimum for any games out there. Much like content creation for example: its always better to have good audio for your audience, even tho your webcam is cheap and of bad quality. SV is already not fun nor enjoyable due to that very specific issues, and not helped with all the others problems it has. Also #BringBackBattleFrontierEquivalent I'll finish on that: I hope they keep the PLA design for the characters into Z-A, it really is breathing that pokémon-esque feel and design, its perfect. SV designs (especially and mostly NPC's and trainers) just felt completely boring and just.. not pokémon-esque at all? The way there are shifting to a more realistic side, it must be careful because right now it just doesn't feel right.
Loved reading your thoughts! I know a lot of friends personally that Unova was their last time playing Pokemon and I get it! I think ZA will probably look different than PLA but still be distinct and not just look realistic like S/V (at least I hope anyway) and if they do struggle performance wise on switch 2 you literally can't blame the console anymore! I'm thinking this will force Gamefreak hands into actually making sure their games are complete before releasing them. We can hope anyway! Thanks for your wonderful thoughts:)
How tf have I had a Dorito recommended to me and now I’m subbed and totally engaged in this content?
I think Dorito is now the number one thing I'm called right behind Bill Cypher LOL. That's seriously so nice, thanks for checking my stuff out and letting me know you like it!
Hey, this was a really well made video! I hope your channel goes far. A few things. As a Sword apologist (I know), I do think that while the Wild Area is flawed in graphical execution, the endgame gameplay it introduced with max raids is something that kept me invested past the story for the first time ever, and I'm a longtime player of the series! Also, I totally agree that HD-2D is the way to go with remakes. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they went in that direction. I just hope it's not a super-faithful remake like BDSP was, because the best thing about remakes has always been what they add to the original games in terms of future gens and gimmicks!
I think it's how I play, I never get super into the end game of Pokemon so I'm sure if I did I'd probably like Sw/Sh more! When I see credits roll in a game I'm usually done haha.
u need to try oras
It's def in the backlog! We'll see when it happens, idk the last time I opened my 3ds lol
Explain it in 5 words or less 💀

Future of Pokemon looking good?
@@TriNintendo ok
Hey Tri, I'm from Germany and your video just randomly popped up in my algorithm - and luckily so! I loved it so much that I immediately subscribed and liked. Please keep up the great work! 😊 By the way, I think Pokémon Legends: Arceus was the best game on the Switch. And what do you think about bringing back the National Dex in the next games because of the higher performance of the Switch 2? I mean, it's Gen 10 - that should be the game of the century right?
That's so cool! You might be my first German subscriber haha. Yeah I definitely think they need to go all out for Gen 10, even if it takes them longer than normal! I would love to see the return of National Dex but holy shmoly that would be so much Pokemon in one game haha. Maybe they could have a cycle like animal crossing where certain times of the day have certain pokemon? Super cool to think about, thanks for subbing and checking out my video!
I have like literally every game in the main series. They are good games, if you dont like them it has something to do with you not the game. I say this as a person who played Blue version on a Gameboy back when it was released.
The games are good but I think it's okay to have favorites or prefer the way it was handled in some games versus the others:)
@@TriNintendo That is sort of unavoidable. Particularly given how nostalgia can make things from the past seem better than they really were sometimes. I will always be partial to Gen 1 and 2 Pokemon just because they were my first two games.
I agree 100% HeartGold and the DS games in general can do no wrong and I think people my age also can't see the problems it had. Wonder if the generation younger than me will look back and think the same of the Switch games
Growing up with ruby n sapphire ik im old
Not bad! I got to play Ruby on my DS and I really liked it. I remember wishing there were more fire types in hoen though haha
Amazing video bro !!
Thanks man! Love hearing from ya :D
HD 2D while it would be literally one of the best things they could make, it also sounds like a nightmare for them to make. They would have to basically remake all sprites up to the gen they are remaking, cuz the last time we had sprites it was like 15 years ago and those assets wouldnt be reusable in any way other than a reference. I can only see them going that far if it only included one pokedex like kanto or unova, or a new dex on a completely new game like PLA did. We can dream though.
Wow that's a great point. Maybe it could only be done with Gen 5 remakes then? Jeez I didn't think about that, it does feel like their 3d models get updated in small ways with each new game.
First video of yours I’ve seen; definitely gonna subscribe!!!
That's so nice :') thank you so much!
Pokémon X released when I was in high school and it was my first Pokémon game. I’ve played several of the new ones since but it wasn’t until recently when I started playing previous generations. X felt like a great one to start with and I have good memories with it but I really missed out on some others for a long time.
X was a great start! I have a real soft spot for X and Y. Happy to hear you've gone back to some of the older games, there's some real gems
Ayy it's this planet's favorite Triangle. They just don't know it yet. 👽🔺
@AdviceAlien well said!! 🙌🙌🙌
Ayy I appreciate it 😎🙏🏻
Here is my take: I think Pokemon needs to get way-way harder. Out of the Pokemon games I've played, I didn't feel very accomplished when I finished the game like I did when I beat a Zelda or Mario game (I'm not saying those are really hard bosses, they're just a reasonable difficulty while Pokemon is extremely easy). I'm not saying they should make it a souls game or something, I get that it is made generally for a younger audience. However, it can just get boring having the difficulty be so low. Scarlet and Violet actually could be hard sometimes, but that's just because the level scaling was off; you could go into an area with level 60 Pokemon while yours were level 10. They also shouldn't artificially scale up difficulty by making you deal less damage, and the opponent does more. I'm saying that the game needs to be a little longer, a little more strategic (because it's very easy to win by just spamming one good move on you Pokemon), and a little more challenging. I also feel like the game starts of harder, but then gets easier. Which kind of goes against game design. Difficulty is supposed to ramp up, not go down.
Breath of the Wild and Tears have the same issue of game hard at beginning and then getting way too easy as you progress. Pokemon used to feel a lot more challenging but with them going into a more open format it's gonna super hard for them to balance it and make it feel difficult without players feeling stuck. It's a tough thing and I really hope they figure it out because I agree, it's so much better when you get your butt kicked from time to time and have to learn something
@dinosaur22 Adult Pokemon fans should really really play 'Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance', it's available on every platform., not just Switch. Atlus has been making everything that you and every other Pokemon fan have been asking for in this comment section since before Pokemon even existed. This includes not just Persona, which is a spinoff of SMT. Sorry for the geek out, haha.
@@TriNintendo I totally agree with the BOTW and TOTK analogy, but for example, in the lightning temple, I got my butt kicked by Queen Gibdo. There was still some challenge after the first couple of hours, whereas in Pokemon, there's like zero challenge. I generally think that Pokemon should go back to the linear format, or at least have both because I'm someone who likes the linear Zelda games, and I feel like it's easier to have a better crafted experience with a more restricted game. For Pokemon I think it would definitely benefit the diffiiculty thing I was talking about, and it would help create a more challenging game.
I've been getting this recommendation a lot! I've played persona but haven't tried SMT yet
Hopefully Gamefreak sees switch 2 as an opportunity to build on the switch audience which has grown up at least 5-7 years lol. Maybe they'll crank it up for the next console, we can only hope right?
1:35 this was a great drawing ngl
Thanks!
Congrats on 500 subs dude!
Also 2d HD pokemon would be something that could change what people look at in terms of pokemon games!
Appreciate it Aaron!
Honestly, I didn’t play much Pokémon games when I was a kid. My first game was swsh, and first time, it was…fine. But that changed quickly, and realized that this thing was a shit of piece. Then I played sv and thought it was good story wise, but it pains me to see something so close to success to being only…pretty good. Then I played legends arceus (yes I played it after) and it restored my faith in this franchise. So I just hope to GOD that ZAZA is good.
Glad you got around to Arceus, it's such a good game! I think ZaZa will be good especially cuz they've been letting it cook longer than they did legends Arceus 🙏🏻
great video again!! your hollow knight video got me hooked cant wait for more content
Hey that's what we like to hear haha. I really appreciate it :D
I think a lot of fans miss when Pokemon games seemed to have some higher stakes. Pokemon games don't really have the same stories they used to, with interesting areas to back them up. I think of Red and Blue where Team Rocket seemed like a legitimate threat to Kanto, or Pokemon Red Dungeon Team where you are literally attempting to save the world from a descending meteorite (not to mention 10 other serious plot points involving your character that made you feel like the events going in were very serious, and it was up to you to fix things!). Scarlet and Violet are great examples. I think of Arven's quest throughout the game, which was a really good example of a minor quest in an RPG! Throughout the quest, you learned a lot about Arven's character, and formed a great relationship with him as you discovered the herbs. In addition, the rewards for each step of the quest were very good and changed gameplay in a noticeable way. The two problems with the quest are 1) While Arven's himself related directly to the final ending of the story and contributed to the climax, it felt like the Titan/Herb quest itself didn't really connect to the end of the game in a super meaningful way. (There are all sorts of problems with how the game ended btw, but that's another discussion) and 2) this wasn't a minor quest, this was like one of the 3 BIG QUESTS of the game. It would have felt really cool for Arven's main quest to involve maybe some of the more mysterious circumstances of the Professor's disappearance, and you have the option to engage in this other minor side quest involving Masbostiff to get more emotional development from Arven. Even low stakes quests have been really missing in recent games Scarlet and Violet really missed out on the chance to engage in some side story missions and quests that could have developed the region and the towns you visit, and I felt like each town never had something interesting to offer since none of them had a quest attached to each town. Sorry for the long rant, overall, stories in Pokemon could increase the stakes of the main story while also maintaining some emotional impact and heart by improving/including more meaningful side quests that provide character to locations/characters.
I think what you're saying points to two things. The first is that Gamefreak is really trying to just get these games out as soon as they can (as if this wasn't evident already due to how it looks lol) and that for some reason on the switch specifically they want to create a new audience. I'd say all but Legends Arceus felt super Kid targeted. Which is funny because people will tell you that yeah cuz Pokemon is for kids but you literally just gave examples of how you can have more mature stories and real stakes in a Pokemon game and they've done it before. Reminds me of the cartoons I grew up watching, avatar the last Airbender and teen titans. They were on platforms that targeted kids and maybe tweens but the shows still were dramatic, intense and could be shown to adults and still be worthwhile. They need to find that balance again! Hey I love your rant it's partially why I made my video, I love hearing about what people have to say! Thanks for watching and commenting:)
I most want the towns to feel more alive. I can't believe in the last game we couldn't even go in most of the buildings. It just doesn't cut it - even the Pokemon Center and PokeMart were a like a street food cart outside! As part of this, I would like to see more Like a Dragon-style substories that let me meet more of the people and Pokemon in places and get involved in their lives and stories. I also really miss set piece areas like the Power Plant, Goldenrod Radio Station, Slowpoke Well, Lake of Rage and Pokémon Tower. I can't really think of any good ones after Po Town in Sun and Moon. Those places gave us extra story beats and were diversions from the main "gotta catch em all and beat all the gym leaders" quests that added much-needed flavour to the adventure ... and for me, Pokemon games are all about feeling like I'm on an adventure!
I think area zero is probably the closest we've gotten to those set piece areas but I agree! Towns have only gotten worse and worse which sucks because they used to be so much more interactive and actually felt like towns. I miss the 3 level Pokemon Centers that had different things to do on them.
Beating the elite four in Pokemon Blue on my little Gameboy before I could even read... Good times
Spam flamethrower and only use fire starter till get win. Been there many times 😎
Agreed, Mega-Evolution is the best of the gimmicks.
Yup, I feel like they shouldn't even need to focus on gimmicks cuz they have not been hitting as of recent.
"Breaking and entering to find items is something we need back" I really felt that. My favorite vid so far. Love the humor and the takes and you're welcome for all the support.
Haha glad you caught that. Your support is always appreciated 🫡🙏🏻
Congrats on 500 subs! It took me like a year and a half to reach 1k. Your growth is explosive!
Thank you! It's been a wild ride and hopefully I don't burn out haha 😅
@TriNintendo I recommend sticking to a schedule that gives you grace to breath. Otherwise it's inevitable.
HD 2D Pokémon 🧠🤯
Even just one game would be sick!
great video! btw 5:24 is on point, I can't stand the font Haiku the Robot uses. It looks like a random stand-in font from some poor Godot game. So out of place, such a dissonance with the aesthetics of the game. Why the dev didn't make a custom font/used a more fitting one and decided that this was good is beyond me.
Wow yeah I looked up the game and it definitely feels placeholder-y. Happy to hear someone mention my design comments cuz sometimes I don't feel qualified enough to make them haha. Seriously thanks for commenting and watching! :)
@TriNintendo haha yeah, sorry for going on that tangent but again really nice video, you captured the things that make HK great.
