    I wanna point out that group skip levels are the most moronic things ever. You can't say any feedback because someone else might take it the wrong way and bring gossip to direct leadership. People don't feel comfortable speaking, and at the very least they feel like they're taking time from someone else for issues that might affect them only. Skip levels are done to enhance and encourage conversations and feedback, not just waste time into whatever topic of conversation you feel like talking.

    Thank you I can very much relate to almost everything you said! Been there done that and arrived at a very similar system. I think an important point that is only implied with the use of a check cadence is: Unless your job is answering emails, DO NOT make your email client ping you, if you get a new email right away. My advice would be to have the mentioned cadence for checking for new mails and not have it notify you at all. If you think you need the reminder once in a while you can set most email clients to only notify/pull emails every x minutes/hours. I also have a kind of email you didn’t mention: digests. For example I am not interested in getting an email for every chat message I get, but if I missed messages for more than 8h I want to know that. This might also be applicable to Jira and other tool. These are usually okay to delete, like other Jira notifications.

    • @TheCorporateEtiquette
      @TheCorporateEtiquette ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, this is very true! I have to admit I don't have an email client anymore - I just use the web based portal nowadays but not being pinged is a vital part of the process! Also good point on the digests!

      @@TheCorporateEtiquette I use the web client most of the time as well. Not enabling push was a conscious decision, switching to web only wasn't, but it works out nicely.

      So true! This should be part of the every manager's training in my opinion and they should go out of their way to explain to their direct reports HOW and WHEN to ask for help.

    I feel like some of the questions will get very unsatisfying answers for jobs with consulting work. I had this in multiple interviews where people only spoke for their past and current customers and projects. They work alone with the customer - maybe w/ one more colleague - and the lines can blur between what is customer company culture is like and what is the actual of the company. Asking for objectives can yield answers like "we do what makes the customer happy" or "it depends on the project". I think, in these cases it might be best to find out how they deal with conflict and negative experiences in projects, assignment of projects and everything around the customer rather then the work at the customer - even if this type of work will take a bigger part the the stuff around. Definitely not an expert on this (yet). But maybe a topic for another video. Thank you for this one!

    • @TheCorporateEtiquette
      @TheCorporateEtiquette 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the insight! It's true, consulting work can be quite different both in expectations and in culture since as you say, it's more about the client than the company itself.

    Insurances usually apply the 'Freework' tactic. Try to squeeze as much out of your network before they even hired you. Also, some software development companies dangle the 'right reasons' over and over, just so they can give you a lower pay.

    • @TheCorporateEtiquette
      @TheCorporateEtiquette 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very common to see "right reasons" used to try to get you to accept lower pay, lower positions etc. It makes my blood boil that companies use it!
