Blacksmith 101... Reassembled and lined Forge
All the Bits from the Cobbled Up Forge were reassembled with high temp Stoneware clay + Sand + Vermiculite mixture to line the pan around the hearth of the Forge. A slight decline towards the centre will make heaping the charcoal over the hearth much easier. I'll just use a forked stick that I'll keep in a bucket of water to shuffle the charcoal around and that will minimise the erosion of the clay lining.(in theory)
Once again, I apologise for the poor sound.
I'm shopping for a good lapel mic with Bluetooth connection to my new phone.
Soon ! 🤞

Sorry about the poor sound from my new phone. Quenched and cooled... now to go in the oven @200°C for a half hour or more to relax the metal so that it's not brittle. I'm curious to find out how hard the steel is for the finished knife. Next will be some steel from an industrial ball mill. 3 different sizes... I like the golf ball size of the middle one and I'm hoping I can make a decent whittl...

A seriously deteriorated orchid mount from 2019. I'm going to be more vigilant when picking over driftwood to minimise softwood pieces which will rot away far too quickly. This rescue wasn't too bad. I simply hose off any sand, soak it overnight in fresh water and stack the pieces on pallets to weather in the sun, wind and rain until I decide to free another orchid from it's pot. Good vigorous root development is my first concern and then I go looking for a suitable mount. @bjornbarre4009 ... there may be pet store, aquatic supplies that have suitable hardwood. 🤔 Corkbark slabs are a frequent choice for orchids. Fruit tree prunings are another possible source for good mounts. Building materials are often treated against insect/termites and untreated pine rots very easily. @@easye2115 ... thank you... the good news is that last autumn many of the cuttings were beginning to develop roots... the bad news is that with my Tasmanian winter, even in my warmroom section of the greenhouse it was too cold and one by one they rotted. As I don't have central heating in my old farmhouse, they would have died inside anyway. The warmroom heater kicks in at 7°C and off at 9°C... sustained chill like that was more than they could handle. A good friend of mine has his inside under 2 LED grow lights in a warm room. Winter greetings from Tasmania. It's possible to reduce the main stem by air layering and cuttings. The leaf size is mainly determined by the cultivar and the age/size of the stem. I have one that's a miniature variety that is still young, but probably will never have leaves bigger than a small luncheon plate. Bonsai techniques probably won't reduce the leaf size dramatically, but I've never tried it. Good luck. 😎👍

Hi Wane😌🙌That's a hardy and tough ginger plant you have in the garden. In Japan here the cultivated member of the ginger family is the Zingiber mioga Japanese ginger is a deciduous perennial in the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) native to Japan. It flowers on a stem and just as it breaks through the ground it's cut and used in vegetable dishes and pickles. It's very cold hardy down to -16℃ so here it goes down to -8℃ and it dies down to its rhizomes.

It does go down to -8℃ here in Saitama Japan. My cacti handle it fine because Winters are dry yet bright and sunny, even the native Vanda falcatas and dendrobium moniliforme can do fine when hanging or mounted to trees. The trees give off a certain amount of heat that disperses frost. Wowzers, it's been hot this month with temperatures 35℃ and humidity hovering around 80%.
