This looks great but back in 1984-1988 the “professor” of broadcasting law, Mr. Randy, said to me that I “would not accomplish anything”. He thought he was God. Very arrogant individual. I really hope communication teachers are better today.

I remain VERY appreciative of the graduate education in Latin American Area Studies-- my 1st MA-- at SIU... and the world-class professors, including D. Lincoln Canfield and my thesis director Hensley C. Woodbridge, who mentored me. It "set the stage" for my 2nd MA (Spanish) and Ph.D. Romance Languages (Portuguese/Spanish/French). (It was at SIU-Carbondale that I was "introduced" to Portuguese.) In my 2nd year of my Ph.D. studies-- at the University of Arizona-- I won a Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Relations grant to study in Rio de Janeiro, which "set the stage" for a Fulbright Fellowship to Brazil two (2) years later, during which I wrote my dissertation. As an academic, I built the first ever Portuguese program at WVU and rebuilt the program at USC into a "full-blown" 18 hour Minor. Later... after doing a Post-Doc at the Wharton School, I worked at the NYC World Headquarters of Colgate-Palmolive. Needless to say, they" put up" with Ph.D. because I could go, BOTH linguistically/culturally, ANYWHERE in Latin America-- including Brazil and Mexico (where I spent time as a child)-- without "missing a beat." I had International Purchasing responsibility for the northern South American, Caribbean, and Central American subsidiaries... and was being "groomed" for responsibility of all of Latin America... including Brazil and Mexico. Later, I worked as a manager in another Fortune 50 corporations and taught at the University of Kentucky and NMSU. At my last academic appointment, I was able to utilize all of this training/experience as Visiting Professor in the Global Business Leadership Program at St. John's University in Minnesota. (That program has three [3] tracks: Europe. Asia and LATIN AMERICA!) In my "retirement," I work with a consulting group that imports fruits and vegetables from Mexico to the Upper Midwest during the LONG, cold winters. Much of this-- both Academic and Int'l Business-- I owe to the foundational preparation I received at SIU. But... BUT... that was 1967-1969; and SIU-- which THEN began to seriously rival "that" institution up at Urbana-Champaign-- is a mere shadow of that former-self. (I heard from a parent of current student that the Spanish program was recently ended, and Latin American Studies has long-since ceased to exist.) I grieve for the SIU that I knew... but its current condition is not unique. I live in St. Cloud, MN, and SCSU recently cancelled its football program. During my twelve (12) here I've seen enrollment plummet from nearly 20.000 to barely 12,000... sound familiar? I am afraid that SIU has embraced many of the same ("woke") policies embraced by SCSU... and the results are-- unfortunately-- entirely predictable.

The best way to show YOUR saluki spirit is to stop neglecting SIUC, a school experiencing growth, in favor of using us as a stepping stone for SIUE, a shrinking school who has sapped the life, the funds, and every leader from SIUC. Do better or quit.

What an inspiring film. The Pavilion dedication is very moving. We're proud to be friends of Ralph and his beautiful wife, Jane. Ralph's generosity and obvious love for and gratitude towards Southern Illinois University is admirable. The Pavilion renovation was quite successful, a lovely and useful addition to the campus.

It was my pleasure to make a contribution to the university where I received my undergraduate degree while serving on active duty in th United States Air Force. This year, I will again walk along the campus grounds in Carbondale, a place that I had never set foot upon until after I officially graduated from the university. Although my situation is not unique, many of my fellow military alums and I attended SIU through an Off-Campus Academic Program while serving on active duty at a military installation somewhere across America. As an Illinoisan, I was very proud to be able to attend a university from my home state while serving in Southern California during the mid 1980s. I actually stepped foot on campus for the first time during the Black Alumni Group reunion in 1997. During that time, I was treated with kindness and felt the camaraderie from those who I met the first time on campus. Therefore, giving to SIU when I can is my pleasure, especially to support a student population destined for great things as they make their mark on the American society.
