Rinpoche referring Carlos Castaneda’s The Teachings of Don Juan(Native Indian). In the book, Don Juan tells Castaneda that everyone has a spot. This is your place of power, wisdom, and clarity of mind. When Castaneda finally found his spot, it turned out to be a place on the wooden floor of his house not much bigger than his seated body. There was nothing outwardly fancy or fantastic about his spot, but it was the place where he was able to channel his energy to overcome his inner, and in the case of the book, outer demons.
More than thousand years ago, Guru Rinpoche visited and discovered many places that were highly conducive to insight and realization. He practiced extensively at these sites, blessing them with his profound accomplishments. While the Mahaguru disclosed many of them in his biographies, he also concealed other places as treasures (termas) for a specific time in the future. Among the latter are the hidden valleys, known as beyuls or-safe havens for Dharma practitioners in times of conflict.
At the Tiger’s Lair, in the cave called ‘Fulfilment of the Lion’s Wishes’,
You subjugated malicious tirthikas, maras and damsi demons;
In power-places, amid snow and rock, you hid the great termas,
Gazing in compassion on sentient beings still to come in this degenerate age:
