    I had the first MG Maestro which had a terrible 1,6 engine that self destructed on me and proved impossible to find a replacement for (in 1992)

    With a turbo derivative of the old BMC A series engine in situ..... Originally fitted to the Austin A30 and the Morris Minor from 1951, the original base engine went through many development stages before finally ending up with the 1275 turbo in the MG Metro from 1983 to1989. The A series engine had quite a history from 1951 to 2000. As a manufacturer, you don't replace engines very often, you upgrade and improve them.... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMC_A-series_engine

    Ah, this reminds me of my MG Montego Turbo named Spot ... so called because there were still bits of white paint showing through the rust. Best car I ever had.

    I think it was in Car magazine that I read their road test for the MG 2.0efi. They wrote if I recall correctly, "It is not as good as a Golf GTi, but then nor is the Golf GTi". That was of course the problem, the Golf GTi had a near mythological status with the car buying public.

    A bit less hot…I had the MG Maestro 2.0i for a couple of years. It was no Golf GTi or Peugeot 306 1.9 rocket, but it did have a surprisingly good kick once the tach was wound up. Eye opening for a mere Austin Maestro! Sadly reliability was not its strong point!

    The Maestro and practically all other British cars simply became extremely unfashionable in the 90s and their true worth was overlooked. I had several Metros including an MG and two Rovers (214 and 416) overall I thoroughly enjoyed owning and driving them, it’s really sad the British motor industry went the way it did.

  • @mistifyme999
    @mistifyme999 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    No disrespect to anyone in the video . but that kind of loafing around attitude is synonymous for lack of attention to detail and quality and is due to poor management and was probably a big factor in the downfall of Rover , I can assure anyone that this behaviour would not be tolerated in any auto assembly plant these days.., .. i remember around 1997 a supplier Quality Engineer from Land Rover called Syd Eccles used to regularly grill me and my firm for poor quality... ironic isn't it .

    Loved the 'boxy' shape of the Maestro compared to the competion in the 80s and early 90s. Hated all those Brava's, Astra's, 205s, Clio's and Escort's which were just different ugly rust buckets at the end of the day.

    Sad to see, all those different lives. Not saying there weren’t a number factors that led to this inevitability, but very little large British manufacturing left in the numbers who work at large factories. These sorts of places had social clubs, football teams, Christmas parties and the and other things that made them an integral part of the community which meant many workers socialised and worked together.

    The very worst car production ever, a bloody disgrace. Ruined the UK car production for ever. All we do now is assemble somebody elses product. Management without a clue and unions running riot, thieving wholesale and "cars" assembled anyhow.
