Thank you Yugen for this great talk. I have a comment which is not directed towards you personally, but is about Buddhist communities in the US at large. Around 14:40 you mentioned David Brooks, described as "fiscal conservative, politically, BUT, quite a thinker...very sweet man, kind". I agree with you about David Brooks, and it was refreshing and extremely rare to hear a Buddhist give ANY conservative any credence of any kind (THANK YOU). I appreciated that. At the same time I think it must be stated that there is an issue when Buddhists giving talks to their sanghas feel the need to preface their words with "BUT" regarding anyone who is conservative in any way. The ideological capture of Buddhist communities by a rabid form of groupthink regarding leftist woke ideologies is the main factor that drove me out of, now, 3 communities within the White Plum lineage and also the Kobun Chino lineage, that I very much otherwise wanted to be a part of. And I tend towards classic laissez-faire liberalism and might be politically a free-thinking independent, if I had to identify myself as something-- I'm not even "conservative" per se!! Each community had become politicized, divisive, and delusional, to the point where conservatives or anyone challenging leftist ideology was being abundantly criticized with prejudice during dharma talks, or Q and As after dharma talks (Trump, Elon Musk, etc)... where real science about COVID was refused to be acknowledged... where narcissistic virtue signaling had become rife.... and even where the dedication of the merits of our practice was even given to Hamas terrorists. To me this represents a serious problem within Zen Buddhism in the west and it's one I care about a lot. So your talk here really meant a lot to me. Imagine how many conservatives and independents have been driven away from the beauty of meditative practice as a result of this perversion of Zen in America (IMO) and ideological capture that separates and divides us instead of uniting us. Thanks again for the integrity of you practice and for having the courage (unfortunately, it does take courage to express support for anyone conservative within a Buddhist sangha in the USA at this time) to address this issue in a compassionate and sane manner. Your friend-- Myoshin :)

No mention of the mapping to aggregates that means they must all be present all the time. Discussed only from the point of view of enlightened energy, no information on the transformation from poison to wisdom and how to accomplish it. no mention of female counterparts to buddhas or bodhisattva emanations so no secret explanation of sense perception being the bliss generated from the union of the bodhisattva sense power with the dakini sense object. You've discussed this as a therapist and left all the buddhism out.

Paraphrasing: • I’ve gained nothing, but I’ve let go of a lot. • We passionately defend who we think we are. • ‘Concepts’ point us to the moon, but they are not the moon. • We never know what’s going to happen in life. • Having an awakening experience does not automatically erase decades of unhealthy habits and behaviours. • Some people use ‘spiritual bypassing’ - using meditation to avoid one’s own emotional shortcomings. • You have to make a conscious effort to heal negative patterns of behaviour and thought. • To study Zen is to study the (personal) self. Watch your ego. Why is it acting the way it is? • ‘Don’t not seek for the truth, just seek to not cherish your opinions’. • The Light is always shining, but our judgments and opinions block this Light. • ‘You can’t argue with a fence’ - if no one’s there to argue, there’s no fight that’s possible. Let go of opinions and judgments. • “To enter this true empty world, immediately affirm: ‘Not two’ (this dissembles the dualistic nature of ‘us’ vs. ‘them’)” • Small things do matter - how you walk into a room, smile at people, etc. Take care, and don’t hold on.

Hello. Thank you for your effort and for sharing this . What is Tara? Black whirlpools within black whirlpools? This womb is like the suchness we talk about? In the Heart sutra, we say no birth no death, no being no non-being. In Diamond sutra we say all that has a form is illusive and unreal- am I correct that this points away from discrimination and to Tara? My assumption is that this expedient means gives us a great framework to operate with. What a lovely practice. Also forgive my ignorance, but is Tara the same as Avalokiteshvara? Also when attaining Buddhahood isn't that like Tarahood? :D great video thx

    • @ananda_miaoyin

Amitabha never materialized as a Buddha who brings dharma to a samsara world; not a Tathagata. He was a Bodhisattva who remained celestial when he became a Buddha. Namo Amituofo! Hmmm....I might be wrong on this. A Tathagata is one who went from samsara to nirvana and then out of nirvana to help sentient beings so, yeah. I guess he is!

Question, if, as I do have allergies, is it then wrong then to “kill” or cut myself off from having to breathe in colognes or perfumes, that cause my eyes to become red and agitate, my throat to burn, my sinus stuff up and my ustation tube in my ears to feel like they are full of wax & fluid? I went to see a movie with a friend, a few minutes into it, and before I toke a Claritin D, but a couple sat down wearing so much scents that I was not the only person to complain but what ever they were wearing caused a sever reaction to me that end up in hospital emergency having passed out while on the way out with friend. I’ve not gone to a movie theatre because of this and one other time that was not as bad, but still left with my eyes red and irritated by the end. Most doctors & scientists agree that allot of the artificial scents or even some natural scents we create aren’t good for is to breath in constantly. And have read several articles that have pointed out harmful chemicals in most scents we create. Yet do to legal loopholes that allow these to keep being made with chemicals that appear harmful, do to cause they make money they are allowed to keep being made. A lady at my Sangha here in Denver has expressed because of her breathing troubles she is always worried about going out cause of same issue but different circumstances. I’m not against liking a smell, thankfully when outside I can handle the pleasant smell of a rose, but to Long and I’ll get an allergy reaction. So what then do I do? My own primary has said you best choice is to walk away, stay away, and not interact with fragrances. But, the mass of society says you need to smell like something to be clean, when you can be clean without all the fragrances, but I rarely if at all ever see that expressed. I don’t like having to cut myself off from going out but sometimes not sure what to do. Thankfully in a restaurant I, if have to can move tables but other times I just have to leave or get very sick, and that can be a bummer cause outside of the scent I cannot tolerate i am there at that moment for the same event as that person with that scent that is making me sick. So what do I do cause don’t want “kill” or cut off myself from others but it’s not a matter of just not liking but rather if I do not I will get very I’ll and sick.
