Poipoia te Kākano
The Kaipara Harbour is the largest estuarine water body in Aotearoa New Zealand and is the largest harbour in the Southern hemisphere. It is of global ecological and biological significance. It is profoundly important to Te Iwi o Ngati Whatua, recreational and commercial users. The catchment and unique estuarine system spans the Auckland and Northland regions, covering 640,000 hectares. The Kaipara is a migratory bird habitat of international significance. Rare species use the harbour for feeding in summer before returning to the northern hemisphere to breed, such as the bar-tailed godwit. Land birds in the area include fairy tern, banded rail, fernbird, and kiwi. The wetland areas provide feeding and roosting grounds for migratory waders, like godwits. The coastal dunes and dune lakes along the western coast provide habitat for banded rail, dotterel, and other species.
The Poipoia te Kākano project is an initiative led by Environs Te Uri o Hau, focused on preserving the Kaipara Harbour's ecological integrity. The project aims to restore the mauri of the catchment by involving Iwi, hapū, central and local government, landowners, and the wider community.
The long-term plan for Poipoia te Kākano is to eradicate possums, stoats, rats, and pigs from 105,000ha on five peninsulas in the Kaipara Moana. The five peninsulas are Hukatere, Okahukura, Puketotara, Pouto (North Head), and Te Korowai o Tonga (South Head) peninsulas. The project then plans to extend into the entire catchment area, which is an additional 543,000ha.
The project completed a feasibility analysis, which indicated Puketotara peninsula should be the first peninsula to begin the possum elimination programme. Korero and engagement with the landowner of Oneriri Station (3,764ha) has been very welcoming and proactive. They have employed a KPF Project Manager to operationalise the huge task ahead.

eco-land developed enviroMate100 at own cost to point of commercialisation , we covered the burden of product development by living without. PF2050 ltd will not engage with a technology that repeately has shown it is 425% more effective than standard kill traps per visit or 625% more efficient across the month. We are financially fully stretched since delivering a container load of enviroMate100 for a promoted landscape trial in 2019. This never happened and the 30k of funding requested to gain the demanded peer reviewed research hasn,t been forth coming. We have offered seevice to 125,000 hectares a year to target possums and rats at a rate of $30 per hectare but have been declined. Why? is this network corruption ?

It must be possible. Back in the day when their coats fetched big money ermine were extirpated from many regions in the world. Mink which are about like swimming ferrets were also wiped out in many places. Weasels will probably be the biggest challenge. The sea mink is even extinct now. A great idea would be having fur from invasive species become politically correct.

Hi - the trap is deactivated during daylight hours - there are two reasons for this 1) Human safety with children less likely to be in the bush after dark and 2) to reduce the likelihood of birds such as Kaka that tend to be more active during the day from entering the trap.
