TMI - Roland U20 Switch Board - Switch Replacements

Just a quick session of how I removed and replaced switches. It's a very simple process, nothing to be afraid of trying. This switch board is not a heavily populated pcb so you should find it pretty easy to do safely. I'm a massive dope!! Had I known this when I took my keys out I wouldn't have broken so many of my keys. Fortunately I have located a U-20 near me for $20, It's got some sort of error message like "Invalid memory card" , but I can use the parts to fix my U-20. This info is invaluable!!! I'm soaking my keys right now, the $20 one I'm picking up today. 👍. Thanks!!

      Invalid memory card... does it have a memory card inserted?

    • @2manyinterests2count
      @2manyinterests2count 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      sounds like a card reader issue. if the unit does not have a card inserted and you get that issue... may be an easy fix. something is telling the u20 that a card has been inserted... but it isn't so it throws an error.

      @@2manyinterests2count I'll know more when I pick it up later today. He said there is no card in either of the 2 slots...

      @@LilHoss The unit thinks there's a card in..since there isnt, it's not connecting to the 'card' as expected so reports error. Fixable.

    I worked at a Radio Shack in Fort Worth TX in 1987! I wasn't a manager, just a salesman. Remember the "Forcefeed" system? That's what we called it, all the little parts that had to be hung on the wall? People didn't like giving their name and address all the time!! LOL 😆

    • @2manyinterests2count
      @2manyinterests2count 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes.. the force-feed was a pain. We called it that too so I think it was a corporate term. perhaps their way of making sure we had plenty of little dpt killers on hand! When I was managing, it was back in the hand-written ticket days as well as the coded levers under the cash drawer days. I was there when the Tandy 1000 came out. And yeah, 'I have to give you my name and address to buy a resistor?' LOL.. They really wanted those addresses.

      @@2manyinterests2count Yes! The finger levers under the draw, the daily report, the transmission of the daily report to corporate thru 56k modem, the drive to the bank to make the daily deposit always leaving $200 in the drawer for the next day. I was at a small strip mall store with a Home Depot next door. One time the CEO of Tandy came to my store and criticized me for not knowing enough about the cell phone displays. I think our regional manager was a guy named Tim Fritz, he's the guy that hired me. You mentioned how the big stuff was all stored in the back, our back room was pretty small with one desk, one day I was getting something off the top shelf in the back room and the shelf started falling onto me, I held it up and started screaming for help, the manager heard me(as well as the customers in the store) and came and kept me from being crushed. Can't say I liked the job, but it was a learning experience.

    These are awesome videos! Have you ever tried flipping the bridge over and using a tiny nut and bolt to put it back in? You would think the middle then would be the tighter and the bolts on each end would be firm too. Just a thought. Maybe your next video you can show how to take keys off properly without breaking them, and reinstalling with spring. 👍

    • @2manyinterests2count
      @2manyinterests2count 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thought of flipping the bridge... (reversing the bow) I think it would create an issue on the ends because of too much pressure in the center. Shims equalize it. There are prob 100 ways to fix this. Perhaps I'll do one for key removal. Thanks for the input!

      Not sure which part you are needing. I would post on the u20 FB group. I don't have any spare parts for the u20 as I've fixed all I've gotten. Perhaps we can look at options for fabricating what you need? Which part?

  • @LilHoss
    @LilHoss 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I've decided to tackle fixing and re-assembling my U-20 keybed. I've had all the keys in a box for around 5 years. It has the Red Epoxy problem and when I tried fixing it I messed it up good, I broke some keys. So now I'm taking inventory of what I have and what I need. If you could explain fixing a keybed that would be awesome! I would love to ask you some questions over on FB if that's okay...👍

  • @LilHoss
    @LilHoss 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You forgot to talk about the notorious Red Epoxy issue this keyboard has. I just turned my u20 into a sound module, but would love to re-assemble my keybed, probably only need a few parts, like the springs and a few keys that were broken because I didn't know how to take the keys out properly. Can the springs be reused?

    • @2manyinterests2count
      @2manyinterests2count 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are so right. That dreaded task probably needs its own video. I have a method but it's involved... and I really hope I don't have to do it again! Yes, springs just need to be placed back into position... and carefully put the key back with a straight directional down movement... to make sure the spring doesn't move. The tension of the key being in place holds the spring in place... which is why so many of them come lose. I'm sure it worked great as a module. I have a 220 in my rack. LOVE it.
