I probably would have done about the same, but make them do a performance roll each and subtract the difference

What I would consider is having them both roll 2d6. Because of the way 2d6 probability works out, 7 is going to be much more likely rolled and 2s and 12s are the least likely. This then allows the players who have likely practiced synchronizing have a higher chance of doing well at synchronizing. The further away their rolls are from 7, the less likely they managed to synchronize well. You could even narrate it that rolling below a 7, the person was too slow, and rolling above a 7, they’re a bit too fast.

3.5e had rules for this. The DC was 20 on an acrobatics check. Both players roll. If they both beat the DC they synchronize well. If only one makes it that one has enough control to slow down/speed up to make it close ASSUMING the other person rolled high enough to actually complete a proper cartwheel (DC 10). If both failed but succeeded in cartwheeling they atleast did the trick but weren't able to synchronize at all. Obviously under DC 10 they flat out fail the cartwheel. I find most questions have answers in the 3.5e rules. 5e is, literally, just 3.5e with training wheels on and less numeric growth. 5e doesn't have spell DC growth or skill growth the way 3.5e did for example.

Maybe to make it better you could let the characters each add OR subtract a relevant ability modifier to their rolls to make them closer together. Of course, they could also choose to do neither. If you did it this way, you would just have to adjust the difficulty by requiring them to be closer than previously for a success

I generally get my players to each roll whichever skill, and have a combined DC. Your idea is interesting, and I might use it for less skilful situations. My system works in the way that if one does well, they help the other to succeed, and vice versa.
