Frankly, the more we can shrink our budgets, the better we are financially because if we don’t spend it, we save it. I don't get it, they have a good job, with good wages, people dream to work for Elon Musk, he created the opportunity FOR THEM AND THEIR KIDS AND THEIR GRAND KIDS, in this horrible economy. Tech Giant companies are firing everyone like a California mountain side, but it's Elon that needs to pay more? How about if he never existed and Tesla was never there and these guys working at some fast food place or some restaurant scraping to just get tips? Ever thought about that? Elon deserves every penny he makes, his taxes alone pay in the billions, notice how no one is leaving Tesla or Space X or any of his other companies? Why? If it's so bad why don't they get a job somewhere else? The answer, it's because nothing is better, nothing has the combination of fair wages and stability like Elon Musk companies. Don't get greedy. When California raised their minimum wage for fast food workers to $20/hr, half of them got let go, you ask the half that was let go and you know what they said on the news? That they would rather have it back to the way it was BEFORE THE $20 raise.

I agree with about 98% of what Ramsey teaches. Bottom line, debt of any kind...no matter what the rate is, is bad. Having everything paid in full is the best way. Think of it this way, you are on your way to work but hate the place but you need the $$ because you're loaded with debt. Now picture being debt free, doing a U turn and saying "nope" The point is you can take any job or a job that makes you happy but pays less than going into a place that eats your soul. I have a 30 year fixed at 3.1% that will be paid off in 2.5 years, a full 16 years ahead of time. It has been a lot of 'going without' but so worth it. now I can toss that mortgage payment into savings/investing on top of what is being contributed now for a full 16 years ahead of schedule. Budgeting advice is helpful. Dave Ramsey is lying when he says millionaires aren't in debt. Many of them use debt to avoid taxes and to preserve their wealth. Why wouldn't you? That is the beauty of savings. You can pay off the debt or let it grow. You have choices.

If you just go by the numbers then arbitraging a high interest investment against a low-interest mortgage is the way to go. Paying down your mortgage is the most risk-free investment, therefore the returns have to be lowest. HOWEVER... Just going by the numbers doesn't fully factor in risk. I'm a few years away from retirement. If I get laid off I'm screwed. So I did it the Dave Ramsey way and paid off the 3.125% mortgage ASAP. Now I have a house that no one can foreclose on and I sleep really well at nights.

All you have said is true, BUT if you have the money saved to pay off your house, you are also no longer in debt. It also means you have more control because you have cash. Your home is not a liquid asset.

We followed the program. We had a huge spending problem. It really helped. Once we were motivated and made changes we knocked out our debt in a few years. Then you maximize retirement. Paying off the mortgage is the final step before building wealth and giving. I see it as practical advice. It’s not designed for you to spend years working the first steps. Missing a couple of years investing while intensely paying off debt is a trade I’d make. I know many people who play with the numbers. I personally have no problem with that. I just know from my point of view it is a good feeling laying my head down at night not owing anyone money

If your loan/mortgage was a fixed rate, then all of the above was true... especially the "options and choices" part. I made the mistake of wanting an even lower rate and because things looked like they were going to continue for the foreseeable future, I opted for a variable rate mortgage. That rate was awesome for the first few years, when interest rates were low. But as soon as the fed started raising interest rates, my payments started going up... and up... and up. I had originally decided to invest money... and borrow the corresponding money because the return on my investment looked like it was going to be much better than the cost of borrowing money to pay for my project. But when interest rates went up... my investments tanked. The amount invested was no longer enough to pay the principle of the loan. So my advice is to not trust that things are going to continue as they are... expect that things are going to change. What is really good advice on Monday, might be the worst advice by Tuesday.

So very true. It is so very important to consider where things are at as far as interest rates and investments. I hardly ever recommend people pull money out of their investments at a loss, though, unless they really have to. If it went down, I assume it was not the S&P 500. Certainly there have been a few hiccups, but it recovered in a short period. That is why something fairly broad, like a larger index, is a good pick, too. I am sorry that happened. I've had some downturns in my life, too.

From a purely financial standpoint this is correct. However, psychologically if the money is "sitting" there it's more tempting to spend it. Over time a person may be tempted into spending it rather than keeping it in savings. Also, the stock market offers a good return over a long enough stretch of time but it's volatile in the short run which can scare people into doing foolish things. In addition, there is a certain piece of mind dividend that comes with knowing the primary residence is paid off. I think there's a lot of psychological factors at play that make this kind of advice difficult to give in a blanket statement, it has to be tailored to the individual and their proclivities.

FACT: D. Ramsey is nothing more than a snake oil salesman (like most conservatives). His product is 75% snake oil and 25% low-grade olive oil. I'm 50 with more than a couple million $$$ in the bank and I still carry a mortgage (15 yr at 2.24%). The mortgage is my only debt. I got to this point in my financial life doing 75% of the exact opposite of what D. Ramsey preaches. I hold 6 credit cards and use points and carry a zero monthly balance on every card. My credit score is 840. I've never owned a business or attended college (so I can say this): D. Ramsey -in my opinion- is financial advice for the desperate, uninformed, weak-minded bottom feeders.

I watched this entire video and you are correct just using math. However, Dave is working with people who have a habit problem. They spend more that they make. The whole debt snowball scheme is about developing a habit of getting debt paid (except the house) and motivation to continue. After getting out of debt and saving your 3-6 months of emergency fund, start your retirement savings. Then if you have more income above the daily living and retirement, then work on paying off the house. The benefit is then the peace of mind of getting completely out of debt when you can then maximize savings and retirement. You need to look at the entire Dave Ramsey system - not just one part of it. Again, Dave is helping people with habits and getting to a peaceful lifestyle - not maximizing math.

I have read his book and wrote a better one--having a bunch of money saved and enough to pay off all your debts is FINANCIAL SECURITY. You should watch my whole video on this as suggested. A financial plan works only if someone gets their spending under control or makes more money. That doesn't make his plan better-it actually makes it worse because he is giving people bad financial advice and not explaining how money works. One is empowered when they understand finance. His hardcore rules do not help people learn.

We put our first home on a 15 year mortgage and paid it off in 10 years. We lived below our means and never had any debt after that despite upgrading our home several times. We retired at 52 with a solid portfolio. My point is this - the freedom and upshot it gave us to not have a mortgage/debt was priceless. We had such pride at what we had accomplished! We'll never know if we might have had more money if we'd kept the mortgage and invested the money but we ended up very well into the seven figure range and thoroughly enjoyed being debt free along the way. Another benefit to not having a mortgage was we didn't need to carry quite as much life insurance because either of us had a paid off home and no debt if the other person died. Such peace of mind ...

@@Fearless_Finances Dave ramsey's book has always started out by saving that first $1K. Then as you increase the baby step, you are doing a simultaneous thing by NOT only paying down debt but putting savings to grow that emergency fund to $6K. Then by having paid off credit cards, push the emergency fund to cover a year's expenses. Pay off cars and student loans, etc. Then snowball everything into your house while still putting a fund into savings. By that time, you should have had around $25K or enough to put into a nice fund that GROWS called Investing. I did drips cause they pay regardless of it going up and down. So yea, I may not go blow by blow with what I am TOLD to do, its only a guideline to follow. Right now, I believe I am still on babystep #5. But I am doing all this simultaneously. My income is split to paying off a roof, keeping utilities and necessities in check while snowballing both roof and mortgage and still having money put aside in that "emergency fund". When I am done, I will have my own 401K, Roth IRA, Savings and emergency fund (never know if I need to replace my car or other things like pipes) and still manage my home. That is what I am doing and teaching my kids to do. Its how to handle being rich while saving money and making good decisions of being rich and knowing how to made money work for me not the reverse.
