A brief intro to the game, it's components and basic mechanics.
On the basis of this excellent video, I'm amazed you didn't get tons of subscribers. I'm now minded to go and check my inventory!
Only if you're a masochist
Just subbed. But man! That's too "heavy" for me. I would get it for my "collection", but I would never attempt to play it. It's complex and time & space consuming. I simply don't have the xtra time and effort needed to learn that game. But it is beautiful!
I have recently played GMT's Normandy '44 and the rules are a streamlined version of this. Am now looking for a way to play Wacht Am Rhein using the "easier" GMT rules.
Great work
There is something wrong with TH-cam’s playback of this video. It will not buffer/stream in 720/1080 playback, where other videos in these resolutions will...WTF TH-cam!!!
This is a very well done review.
Try Ticket to Ride Europe for as low as Rs. 25 from the comfort of your home! Rent the game from lordofthegames.in/product/ticket/ and get it delivered to your doorstep as per your convenience. For board game enthusiasts in Mumbai only.
There is an advanced strategy beyond odds even that you failed to explain
This is the 1st Edition of the game, right? Does anyone know of the second edition also has the same bleed issue on the counters? And what other physical components change does the second edition feature also?
Enjoyed the video immensely. Though it may be a bit dated, you implied you might be interested in giving the campaign a try with an opponent. Are you still interested in having a go?
Sorry for not reviewing comments earlier - work has been hectic in lockdown. I would be very interested in playing.
Can't wait to try this game with the 3rd edition rules! Great review! 👍👍
Um 20:23 red can indeed play on the furthest right column & creates a sort of forced 7 pattern, winning
I think that would only happen if the entire left side of the board was played out perfectly until yellow had to take the spot in column 6
@@sambiermanmusic yes, looking at it a year later, yellow plays first, so (if red plays 7 at that stage) would eventually be forced to play column 6...if unable to win on the left before that. But it looks terrible for yellow, the analysis in the video is kind of wrong at 20 minutes. for yellow to get a win on row 5, column 6, red would have to have won already below!
Fantastic breakdown. When are you going to release part 4? Or where can I get the information to learn the last step you are talking about.
My apologies, we lost the ability to edit videos and Part 4 has been postponed. It might still be recorded though. The strategy to win against expert players is to stop a column at an uneven row (one that can only have one or three or five pieces in). The player who goes first can force this result if they know what to look for. I will try to get a video out showing this.
New reprint just dropped
Well I've played well over 1000 board wargames in my day and there were much more beautiful boards than this...It helps with the immersion. Lets face it before computers all you had were counters and maps...both have to be beautiful.
When I used to play 30 years ago, the map was very important. A colorful and beautiful map was important. This map looks bland.
I am not sure what you are expecting from a heavily forested upland in western Europe. It looks better in real life.
Do u need the original Ticket to Ride to place this game?
Yes, that or Europe. Think you also can use the nordics, but they only have 3 train sets
You require Ticket To Ride or Ticket To Ride: Europe to play United Kingdom with 1-5 players, or Pennsylvania 1-4 players, or Nordic Countries for 1-3 players on either map.
no part 4 :( nooooooooo

Great video! Maybe a little more light to enhance it. Keep it up!
Nice review thanks.
I played the campaign game as the Germans in the seventies when it came out. We laid it out on my carpet. Unfortunately we found that it was badly flawed. I hope this edition has corrected the problem, which was this. The opening Americans are frozen in place until they wake up. Waking up has an increasing probability as each turn passes but is primarily keyed to how near combat is (i.e. the sound of gunfire). So what I did, devious player that I sometimes am, was to attack in only one place (I think near the Losheim Gap). By resisting the temptation to attack all along the line as the designer clearly intended, I was able to create one sizeable hole in the Allied line, push units through it and get behind almost all the front-line American units before most of them had even woken up. It was a slaughter. So we quickly abandoned the game and never played it again. I was pretty irritated that SPI clearly hadn't playtested the game properly. This devious tactic should have been recognised and stopped before publication..
There is still the concept of "activation" but they must have realised the same. Now it is possible to activate units anywhere on the map and the German forces have to make the most of their surprise. The real issue for the German player is logistics and traffic jams. They can't do everything they would like to do. If you want to see the new activation rules I think you can search for them on line.
I think a lot of the 'Monster Games' of the 80's weren't fully play tested....we [the players] were really the play testers....you should have adapted the rules slightly and played again..we did. Still enjoyable though.
You could have made up a house rule dealing with that problem
very informative and detailed review about this game. thanks very much.
Excellent commentary, I have the game and your video makes playing much easier. facebook.com/groups/1883329641902873/
That's great. We really like that game and would like to make it easier for others to try it out.
There is a good new paperback by David Render called "Tank Action". It describes what it was like to live and fight in a Sherman tank very well.
Thanks for the heads up. Will check this book out.
Very much enjoyed this. The scens are asymetrical in this game, and it makes this game great.
Great video! The American side got some extreme bad rolls. What can I say. Banzai! :)
The US went on to win that game. We find that scenario very difficult to win as the Japanese.
Gonna watch this again. Being Polish, did you do the Price of Honor DLC (i.e. lets win WW2 in 1939 featuring Poland.... OK, it ain't gonna be easy :)
Would love to play this. A campaign that is often overlooked. Need to find a copy of the game though..... This is harder than you would think in the UK. Nice to see Franciszek Kornicki win the "People's Spitfire Poll".
:-)
If your aunty had balls , she'd be your uncle .
If I drain my swimming pool it may just fit in there .
Life's a bit too short for this really . Cut out the middle man and just join the fucking army , and you won't have to pay them a bean .
... or you have to pay the ultimat price...
If you really want to do this , put on a tin hat and join the fucking army . It's so much more realistic .
If you really want to be funny, become a comedian and get on a stage. Except I suspect you won't be at all amusing.
An object lesson in how to do an unboxing. Very informative and well presented.
Thank you for your kind comment! We hope you found it useful!
Good mini-scenario. I took out the KV2 in two turns for the loss of two tanks.
Wonderful review as always. Thanks very much for doing this interesting game. Academy games are, in my opinion, som of the best published today.
thanks, i look forward to viewing your thoughts.
Nice video - good overview on how to play.
Yes I have to agree with the rest, best review on this game on YT. Thank you for your honest review! Already picked up the game and look forward on playing it soon. Thanks!
Where's part 3?
Part 3 is now posted - you'll never lose again! :-)

With regards to your comment about NOttingham being on there instead of Derby, I wonder whether that is to appeal to the american market who will have heard of NOttingham in the context of robin hood. Just a thought.
No it's because Nottingham isn't an absolute shithole
Academy games new Conflict of Heroes game, Guadalcanal, will be out in the not too distant future. I'd like to see that one done.
We have acquired a copy and are working on it!
best review i'VE SEEN ON THIS GREAT GAME. Thanks.
Thank you Ben! It is great to get feedback. Any other games you would like to see us review?
I really enjoyed your video. This is one of my favorite war game designs and I'm glad to see people still making videos for it. I may have missed it if you covered this, but one reason why morale on the back is higher than morale on the front is that it also represents that some units make better use of the terrain to avoid further casualties. So the American line unit just isn't better at coming back to the fight sooner, but they are better trained and or experienced to seek cover when under attack and are more difficult to kill vs. a unit that is not as well trained. On the other hand, Volksgrenadier units were formed later in the war and have a lower backside morale to reflect that they are not as combat experienced or equipped to take advantage of the terrain when taking fire. All subject to opinion. I very much agree with the narrative aspect. The random events add some great story elements. I have had troops in a building before and a random fire started near the building and then spread to the building causing me to abandon it. I just imagined that strays rounds caught the fields next to it on fire and off we ran. The game does handle many things abstractly through the use of the cards, but if you open your mind to the game play, stories just write themselves creating great narrative and atmosphere. Very fun game. Thank you for posting.
+Bad Karma Thanks for your comments - much appreciated. The morale issue that I have is that every American unit has a lower morale than its counterpart from other nations. This makes them more likely to go to ground when under fire. But my understanding of US infantry training (and famously put into practice by the airborne forces) was that they were trained to push forward if hit by fire. This seems to be the opposite of the game effect. It doesn't detract from the game though and it isn't meant to be a study of infantry combat in any case. It is a game that creates great stories. Am looking forward to playing the "Sea Lion" Battle Pack for that very reason.
I just like to add narrative to the rules to help put things in perspective. So i like what you said about US infantry pushing forward under fire also helps with a high morale value. Just makes it easier to get them fighting again to push forward. Your right, it's not a study of infantry combat as this game isn't a simulation. I just enjoy the story aspect :D
Great video
