White Teeth is her best novel but my personal favorite is On Beauty because it has one of the funniest scenes in literature and it forever ruined college a cappella groups for me 😂
I am right now trying to read Orwell. Gave him a shot some years ago but I was not in the proper mood. Maybe now. Thanks for the wonderful information.

In movie called Mr Jones by Agnieszka Holland Orwell was plaid by Joseph Mawle. Obviously that was rather Orwell older than in times of Spanish Civil War, but anyway...

The prose was mediocre.
I'm inclined to trust your authority on this novel with a name like that, Mr. London. 🫡🇬🇧
I find her prose to be bush league. I have been sampling her work, and her imprecision with language makes her writing unbearable. I found in one passage of like 5 sentences in one book she incorrectly shifted tense, she called a room "small and cluttered," but then said the parrot's squawking echoed in the room (small, cluttered rooms don't echo, rather, large empty rooms echo). And check this passage out: "Andrew Bogle knew too much about the world to trust it. He had lived under the rule of people who controlled not just his body, but the very air he breathed. In the cold streets of London, that old suspicion followed him like a shadow, a reminder that no matter how far he had traveled, he was never truly free. The trial had given him a voice, but what use was a voice in a world that refused to listen? Eliza, in her own way, understood this too well." She talks in the first sentence about him distrusting the world, and then she shifts in the third sentence to "suspicion". These are two very different words with different meanings, and her inconsistency caused me to stop and reread to figure out what was going on. The "shadow" metaphor makes no sense. If she was trying to convey the burden of constant distrust of others, that is an internal burden, an implicit burden, not an external burden. She could have said it weighed her down, but it's odd to say it's a shadow outside of her. She is way over-hyped.
The good news is, The Fraud isn't... a fraud, at least.
I do believe she wrote the novel herself, but . . . who knows? 🤷🏼♂️

Interesting video! I’ve only read her first two and didn’t really enjoy Autograph Man and loved White Teeth so I’m in line with your ranking so far! I never got to On Beauty as I felt I had to read Howard’s End first (apparently it’s a reimagining of Forster’s novel in the same way that Demon Copperhead redoes David Copperfield) but maybe I should just get on and read it for its own sake.
Thanks! Yeah, I read On Beauty without reading Howard's End first. I didn't feel like I missed out on anything, because a reimagining should stand on its own, unlike a sequel. I would like to read Forster now though!
Diary of a wimpy kid diper overload
I took a class in grad school all about Zadie Smith. It was one of my favorite grad classes. I agree with putting Autograph Man and Swing Time in the bottom, but I flip them. Swing Time is the worst to me. The whole Africa plot line drags the cadence of the story down for me.
Glad i'm not the only one who thought that about the Africa plotline 😅 I'll have to give The Autograph Man another chance-I did like the second half. I'm jealous of your Zadie Smith class by the way. That sounds really cool!
