Exorcists & Zombie Leprechauns: The Weird World of 'Wake of Malice' with Eleanor Bourg Nicholson
Website: eleanorbourgnicholson.com | LegendHaven: legendhaven.com | If you think Gothic literature is all about gloom and doom, think again. "Wake of Malice" proves that death can be hilarious, blending humor with horror in a way that’s fun, makes you think, and keeps you reading.
Eleanor Bourg Nicholson chats with Dominic about anti-Catholic sentiment in Victorian literature, and how she's crafting a series centered on a Dominican exorcist battling the supernatural. She loves to focus on grace, redemption, and the weirdness of human experience.
Did we mention weird? Yes. Cue Edgar Alan Poe, epic things that bring joy, imaginative worlds, plus the weirdest story she ever read - that she liked.

ABOUT ELEANOR
What do you get when you combine homeschooling, Gothic literature, devotion to St. Dominic and to the English Catholic martyrs, university specialization in Anti-Catholicism of the British Victorian Period, and a sense of humor? Eleanor. With her husband, she homeschools their children, and by night, she reads the Victorians, writes Gothic novels, and thinks about vampires, werewolves, zombie leprechauns, and Thomist exorcists.

    It’s cool to see that you’re not freaking out about AI. Obviously nobody should be using AI to write or structure their stories, as they’ll end up with oatmeal. But AI is, in fact, a useful tool for punching up things you’re already writing. Much of it will be cringe, but occasionally it’ll say something that sparks a new idea in your own creative imagination. And that’s one more idea that you didn’t have, before. AI is just another tool, people are acting like it’s inherently evil or anti-creative when, in fact, in the hands of a creative human, it allows an interesting and indeed *creative* way to get your own mind onto some new paths and off to the races with your own words. This is especially useful for people who have been writing a long time and have developed deep habits which can become ruts. I think of it as being akin to letting my intelligent but somewhat clueless mom read my draft. She’ll give me a bunch of comments that make me roll my eyes, but occasionally something she says hits, and i think either ‘that’s not a bad idea,’ or, ‘that’s a bad idea but if you did *this*, it would be a super cool idea.’

    I can attest to acquiring a specific taste for "real music" once more AI-infused music has come into the picture. It's so crucial that whatever the art form is, a human at least curated it. And the more obvious the human touch is, the more interesting the art is. This is to say--I at least have not experienced AI as a threat to human creativity. I think it's really just illustrating the importance of the human element now that we can see what happens when that is diminished by those using AI to pump out "content".

      The reasoning in the other video was that reinforcing writing with outside rewards trains your brain to seek those rewards rather than the writing itself. I...don't really think it's an "either or" thing, though. Sometimes writing is a treat, other times it's a chore, so whatever routine probably isn't a one-size-fits-all, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work for some, or even most people some, or even most of the time. As for the other video, I think it was called "what not to do as a writer if you have ADHD or autism" or something like that.

    I get the stance against info dumping. But I think in some cases it’s necessary to convey information the reader needs to get some things and maintain a level of interest to continue the story. As long as there’s a balance and awareness, I think you should be fine. Remember you’re writing a book, not a movie screenplay. The reader is allowed to get more immersed in the story than a movie audience. Going the opposite way always making an effort to not release information can make your story a task to read and not enjoyable. Like you can have a great story but nobody finish the book or recommend it because they found navigating through it like work, instead of a delight. Idk just a counter argument. Maybe to do info dump well you have to create the conditions for it. Like if there’s no other way, create a character that has dementia and have another character remind them of the obvious things that the reader has no other way of knowing lol.

    • @legendfiction

    • @TRYCLOPS1
      @TRYCLOPS1 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@legendfiction It’s just a bad example but you get the point. Info dumping is necessary. Like writing a book is info dumping. You have plot but plot needs context. In a movie you have visuals you can use and intro texts. Like Star Wars that has info dump texts in the beginning of each movie. It works fine. If your goal is to just have your readers starve and beg for crumbs of information throughout the story, you better be an established author with a strong following. Because if your goal is to attract new readers, they don’t have trust in you, that the mess you’re making for them to pick up the pieces will have a worthy payoff. So you have to use literary tools to prove your trustworthiness. Of course, you don’t want to bore people describing all your world and and history before you start your story, but providing a balance of context as you go is not bad.

      Glad it might be helpful for you too. Yes, I added a CSS file to increase the width of the column. I followed a tut, and if you grab my template in the link, the css file is in a folder with the code.

    Thank you! I was honestly overwhelmed and my notes were completely unorganized. I'm glad to have found this video and more so for your channel. ❤

    SING WITH ME❗❗❗ AI IMAGES ARE NOT ART!! AI IMAGES ARE NOT ART!! AI IMAGES ARE NOT ART!! You are either for or against the cause. AI images and AI bros have done so much damage to the art community. You as an artist of writing should know what is harmful to our community. This isn't only about painting and drawing, this encompasses all of us authors, musicians animators, and actors aswell. Stay out of the gutter. This isn't a time to be "neutral". If you are "neutral" then you are basically allowing your fellow artists to be walked over by greedy corps and artist wannabes. They came for artists first, and soon they'll come for writing and other forms of art. You have to stand now as one or there will be no one to stand together with you when your community suffers.

      it is what it is. you cant stop progress, only adapt. no industry will be left untouched by this new revolution, the entry level of most sectors (including art and writing) will be gone to ai. That being said, it's only gonna be the entry level. the talented and the hard workers will get even more successful. Just use the tool to your advantage.

    Thanks for taking the time to share your discovery of Obsidian, I am inspired by the way you are using it. I am just in the process of approaching using it and can see the potential when I finally get a workflow suited to my needs. Good work man, Winning!!!

    Are you making a new vault - for each unique book that you're working on?

    • @legendfiction
      @legendfiction 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven't decided yet. for now, I just put each book in its own folder, same vault. perhaps if I'm writing a multi-part series, I would want a new vault for a big project.

    How did you sort your Canvas files above the folders? Even in your template, folders always appear on top of everything else.

      It's been a minute since I set it up, but there's probably a plugin for manually resorting the items :)

    I really like Obsidian, but I fell in love with novelWriter for my novels. It may not be for you, but it's free and open source, so it won't cost anything to give it a try!

    I came to the same conclusion after years using Scrivener. Obsidian is way better (Sorry Scrivener). Don't you use Longform plugin for the writing sessions themselves ?

      I did try it for a minute, a while back, but decided the default note format was enough for me to get going. :)
