A short mochi pounding session during the covid-19 pandemic. In spite of the pandemic, we decided to go ahead and pound some New Years mochi just to continue the annual family tradition.

Here's a mochi pounder (kine) that I recently found at the local swap meet. It was made in Japan out of keyaki wood. I cleaned it up and pounded some mochi with it.

At the last minute, we decided to go ahead with our annual mochi pounding despite the pandemic. Everyone had to be vaccinated and masked. Our guest list was cut way down to include only immediate family members and our seasoned mochi crew.

December 2012 New Year's Japanese mochi pounding in Kailua, Oahu, Hawaii. Over 85 years (4th generation) of tradition. Featuring a 4-man pound. The usu (mortar) is carved out of Hawaiian lava rock. The kine (mallets) are made out of Hawaiian guava wood, which are hand selected and cut from a guava tree forest and seasoned for several years.
