You should clean all copper fouling from your barrel before testing all copper bullets. The jacket material is different from mono bullets and doesn’t layer/mix well in the barrel and will affect the accuracy.

I found the Federal 136 grain "TL" bullets in 270 at a local store. Turns out it's the same bullet as their Terminal Ascent but with the previous name. I bought all of them and the 130 Trophy bonded and 140 Trophy bonded, all in 270. I loaded the 136 grain bullet in primed Federal nickel brass I bought from American Reloading after some brass prep. I uniformed all the necks only. The bullets are sitting on a stout load of Superformance powder and shot half MOA in one of my stainless Tikkas. I failed to bring my Garmin to clock them but considering the Barnes 130 TTSX are moving over 3325fps in the same rifle with the same powder and less of it, I'm guessing it's likely close to the same speed.

My first hunting rifle was a right hand Ruger M77 in 270 Win. Hunted one season with it. The next year they introduced the Ruger M77 Mark II and had them in left hand. I traded my right hand in on the left hand and paid $20 extra. The Mark II was also a 270. That was around 35 years ago. I had that one rebarreled with a Hart barrel, glass bedded the wood stock, shortened the LOP, and had the trigger pull reduced to around 3 pounds. Killed a pile of deer with it. Sold it last year. Kinda wish I hadn't.

@@mike.hardy37 Historically, Remington has used Hornady bullets but used green tips in place of red tips for several of their factory ammo. Remington bought Barnes bullets, then sold them to Sierra in 2020 during bankruptcy. The CuT ammo 7PRC 160 grain is likely the Hornady CX bullet. That said, Barnes is soon to release their 7PRC Vortex ammo with a 160 gr bullet. My hunch is Rem is using Hornady bullets though. Their old Accutip is an SST bullet.

Six one way, half a dozen the other way. Either longer range with the PH ELD-X or better performance at a closer distance with the Federal Ascent. I believe in choosing the bullet for the job. I was seeing another case where a guy was asked why he was choosing one bullet over another. One could probably get him a ragged one hole group but it would not have the impact performance he needs for prairie dogs. Another bullet that has a every so slightly wider dispersion is chosen because of how it interacts with the varmint. I was reminded that in this round of testing. And there are some who like the monolithic copper precisely because it is lead free and also likely to produce an exit wound. But there is that copper fouling thing. As you have already fixed that.

Hornady is having supply issues right now with powders 7PRC seems effected the most, they say they choose accuracy over velocity for their substitute powders so speeds are quite low from box velocity Hopefully its a temporary thing and with other ammo makers staring to bring out 7PRC options that seem to perform as advertised the future looks promising for the newest 7

Yes it's all over the internet about Hornady and their 7PRC factory ammo. The word is they started with Reloder 26 and ran out, so they used HD which is slower by 200fps. The good news is Federal factory ammo using the same bullet, 175ELDX is closer to 3000fps in some rifles. It's not that fast in any of my 7PRCs but close

Most definitely the shooting stuff is, all aspects, especially rifle, is why I watch. I think it would be great to see the Backfire challenge. I watched a video last night where a guy has shot thousands of rounds through multiple rifles and never cleans or so he says. I just can't bring myself to storing rifles with dirty barrels. OCD I guess.

@@mike.hardy37 I just picked up a new Tikka 270 stainless. It's my 3rd. I bought another one new last year and one used but the seller cleaned it to bare metal before shipping it. I inspected it with my bore scope as I do with every rile I buy before ever shooting it. I also clean them all before shooting. I also have another new Tikka stainless 7RemMag coming next week. The plan is to shoot either the new 270 or new 7RemMag and after my first cleaning as mentioned, I won't clean again and I'm going to compare accuracy over time. Ultimately one of the 270s will be rebarreled to 280AI

Good luck on your pronghorn hunt. Do you load your own ammo as well? One thing I've noticed with factory ammo, in particular, the Hornady ELDX and ELDM is there is remarkable differences in POI from LOT to LOT. I went overboard and bought multiple cases of both when 7PRC first came out and I can shoot one lot of ammo in one of my 7PRCs and it shoot to my satisfaction and then switch LOT numbers, same ammo, and it not shoot well at all. I've noticed different powders and seating depths when I pulled them apart.

Maybe after cleaning bore shoot a few rounds to foul it then try some groups again. A lot of rifles like fouled bores for better groups. Also maybe lower your bipod when in prone, seems like you're having to sway your back to get up so high. Just some suggestions.

It also depends on the job. For hunting, 3 shot groups are fine. Out to 400 yards, a 1 MOA dispersion is still usable. In my 7 PRC, I am using the PH 175 gr ELD-X. Even if it is slower than stated on the box (others have currently measure MV as low as 2800 fps,) speed is not everything, bullet performance is key. So, I had a 3 shot group that was .64 inches (.61 MOA.) That does not mean it is a .61 MOA rifle, that is just the dispersion I got that day. Applying a little of the Hornady podcast on group sizes, 7 of the 3 shot groups will give a predictability to the gun that will account for the variances you had here. However, I would ask about the weather conditions when you had the .6 inch group. Mine was at an indoor range with no wind, climate controlled, skinny little work bench. So, using the bipod and butt against my shoulder, relatively similar to how I hunt with a tripod. If I could spread out and lock things down, it might be better. I am not going to shoot more than three times at a game animal. In fact, if I have not brought the beast down by the second shot, he is probably not going to stick around for the third shot. As for cleaning, I normally do clean after a range trip. But for hunting season, got my 7 PRC and scope zeroed for 100 yards and then left it dirty for the season. Because by the time I had the zero I wanted, the rifle was dirty. However, I entertain the idea of just cleaning anyway, as a test group, and see if cleaning really effects zero. I am of the opinion that the "cold bore shot" is really more about a cold shooter than a cold barrel.

I like the test but why not try the Federal 175 Eld-X vs the Hornady Eld-X My 7 PRC shoots both of them sub moa and the 180 Eld-M's are very good shooters also, especially at longer distances I have lots of Hornady brass available for anyone reloading 7 PRC I only shoot factory ammo

@@mike.hardy37 It's a really enjoyable hobby. I'm now at 35 years with it. I do advise not to trash any of your brass, ever. Many people will buy once fired brass from you. If you do decide to start handloading, I recommend you use Hornady brass as a last resort. I've use a LOT of brands and have never seen brass go bad as fast as Hornady. Of the common brands such as Winchester, Remington, Federal, Hornady, I've had good luck with all but among those I have the most experience with Winchester, then Federal with the Fed being best. Moving up from there, Norma is excellent and I've had good luck with Nosler too. Then Peterson, ADG, Lapua are my top pics if I want ultimate precision. For hunting applications I have found no difference in these top 3. Anyway, save all of your brass

yep, clean barrel vs dirty barrel is NOT the problem. Try a few things 1st. 1st, don't clean your barrel before you head out again. 2nd, and maybe most important, try a LOOSE and CONSISTENT hold and shoot your group! Then, use a firm hold while hold consistently firm and shoot your group! You will and should notice a impact location difference between the 2 holds as well as a group size difference. This determines your rifles hold sensitivty and whether or not it is or not! 3rd, check that all your screws are tight and TORQUED to spec! My 7mm prc rattles screws loose often. Well, it used to. Definitely check scope rings and scope base screws. 4th and last for now, check that your barrel is trully free floating and has enough clearance. too close to the foreend and too thin a barrel can cause barrel harmonic issues.

Just to add to what everyone else has said. Don't clean the barrel so much. I use to clean after every range trip but you should really only clean it when the accuracy starts to spread out OR if you decide to shoot copper ammo.

Multiple props here. First for continuing to test overall and it isn’t cheap. I would have done a couple to foul after cleaning but you did the same for both. The potential for “Confusion and Hype” on social media is marketing. The results on game for the precision hunter seem suspect but hard to confirm. Terminal assent has a cult like reputation and followers.

I know when I was shopping for my 300 wsm the long range models for the rife were 1:8 twist where as the speed was 1:10 twist. For that reason I would expect that the long range would shoot heavy for caliber bullets better but the speed should shoot your typical hunting bullets better. That's interesting observation though.
